Effective Ways To Keep Grasshoppers From Ruining Your Summer Crops

Effective Ways To Keep Grasshoppers From Ruining Your Summer Crops

Sharing is caring!

Summertime sometimes comes with swarms of grasshoppers. You will often see them happily hopping around your garden. They might stay or continue on with their adventures, but it can sometimes lead to a full-blown invasion!

That happened to my garden last year. When I went to check my plants, I was shocked. They were feeding on my crops and enjoying the leaves. Grasshoppers are also big fans of flowers, stems, and seeds. Anything you try to grow, they can find a way to ruin it.

Luckily, I found these simple tricks to drive them away from my yard. If you notice grasshoppers this season, don’t wait for their entire family to arrive. Act quickly before it’s too late!

Start Raising Chickens

It’s time to become a farmer! By raising chickens, you can get rid of grasshoppers. They feed on them and their larvae, so after a few weeks, there won’t be any sign of them in your yard.

I bought chickens last year, and they helped me a lot. A great advantage is that you’ll always have fresh eggs for breakfast! You’ll just need to fence off your flowers so the chickens don’t reach them. Just a few hours of free-ranging around your yard can save all your crops from grasshoppers!

Make A Garlic And Hot Pepper Spray

This is a highly effective way to keep them out of your yard naturally. The best part is that you won’t have to use chemicals! They can’t stand the smell of garlic or the spicy taste of peppers. Grasshoppers might be vampires!

First, chop the vegetables up. Then add six cups of water, boil for twenty minutes on medium heat, and let it cool overnight. The next day, strain it and put it into a spray bottle.

Apply it to your plants every day – especially after watering and rain – as the spray can wash away. Repeat until the grasshoppers give up searching for food in your garden. Trust me, it won’t take long!

Set Up Trap Cropping

Have you ever wondered what trap cropping is? Well, it’s another effective way to keep grasshoppers far away from your plants.

You can outsmart them by planting wheat, rye, or timothy grass near your crops. Start early in the spring to give these plants time to thrive and become irresistible to the grasshoppers. As a result, your vegetables and flowers will not be interesting to them at all.

They will be happily fed and won’t keep looking for food in your yard. You might even end up saving all the crops in the neighborhood!

Dust Your Plants With Flour

Keeping grasshoppers out of your yard with flour might sound unbelievable, but it works! Believe me, I was surprised too. It turns out to be an excellent natural insecticide!

Put flour in a jar and make small holes in the top. Gently sprinkle it onto the leaves of your plants, just make sure to use all-purpose flour, not baking mixes, which may contain salt or sugar. These ingredients can be harmful to the soil! Apply this daily, just like the spray.

Are you ready to try these amazing tricks? Each of them has proven effective in driving grasshoppers away! You’ll also have a lot of fun, from raising chickens to crafting magical sprays.

Prepare everything you’ll need and make your garden free of grasshoppers!
