What’s growing on, gardeners?
Summer is slowly coming to an end! Although August is the last month of the sunny season, you still have plenty of work to do.
A few years ago, I made a list of gardening tasks. Having everything noted down makes the job so much easier because I know exactly what to focus on in my yard each season. This has saved me a lot of time. I even went on holiday for a few days!
If you want to make the most out of your garden this August, you’re in the right place!
Start Planning Fall Veggies
Take your planner and start jotting down your plans! August is the perfect time to prepare for fall vegetables. Try planting onions, garlic, potatoes, and radishes.
You can already buy seeds and start planting them indoors now. Once the weather starts to cool, you can move the vegetables outside.
In the meantime, clean up the area of the garden where they will be planted. You can even try using raised beds. Let your imagination run wild!
After just a month or two, they’ll be ready to move to your garden. Then you’ll have delicious crops to enjoy throughout autumn and winter. Don’t forget to add some tasty recipes to your notes!
Collect Seeds For Next Year’s Planting
Spring and summer blossoms will come to an end in August. That’s why you’ll need to visit your flowers and collect the seeds. Store them in a dry and cool area in your house. Now you just need to wait until next year to plant! Your garden will be colorful again after winter!
The best thing is that you won’t have to spend money on buying new plants.
I gather too many seeds every year, so I always share them with my friends. You can also give them as a gift to someone! They’ll surely appreciate it.
Harvest Fresh Herbs From Your Garden
August is the perfect time for harvesting herbs! Set your alarm early in the morning and start collecting them.
After you’ve finished that, wash the herbs and let them dry. Then, chop them into small pieces. Place the spices in bags and put them in the freezer. Now you have delicious seasonings for your favorite meals!
Clean Your Gardening Tools
Keep your tools clean and tidy! August is the perfect time for this. If you notice that your shears are rusty, clean them quickly, as dirt can spread so many diseases.
Wash them with water and soap to remove any remaining soil. You should also disinfect your tools. Use rubbing alcohol to eliminate any bacteria and fungi. This will protect your plants the next time you do some pruning!
Cover Grape Vines With Bird Netting
Mockingbirds can easily reach your grapes, especially in August when they start producing juicy fruits! Birds have incredible eyesight and can spot your grapes from miles away.
Last season, a few birds found mine too! After I went to harvest my fruits, they left me with only about three grapes. How nice of them! So, I purchased bird netting and covered all of my vines.
It was helpful because now my berries are protected from mockingbirds! If you’re planning to make some jam or juice from your grapes, make sure to add this to your list!
Protect Bird Baths From Drying Up
August is definitely the hottest month of the year! If you have a birdbath in your backyard, keep an eye on it. Check every day to ensure there’s enough water. If you notice it drying out quickly, move the birdbath to a shaded area and constantly add fresh water.
You’ll provide the birds with refreshing baths and drinks during the hot summer days. They’ll always want to visit your garden to cool off! And you’ll enjoy watching them flying around your plants every day.
Are you ready to have some fun at the end of summer? Now you know which important tasks to do this August.
I enjoy working in my garden every season. Besides keeping everything clean, I also protect my garden during these hot days. Now it’s your turn to check things off this list!
Until next time!
