Fuchsias are one of the most beautiful shrubs you can plant in your garden. You’ll be able to enjoy their colorful flowers from June all the way until early autumn! But what should you do when winter arrives?
That was the first question I asked myself when I started planting fuchsias! I knew that these flowers wouldn’t be able to survive a cold winter in my garden.
That’s why I immediately started searching for some tricks I could use to protect them, because the end of fall was already rapidly approaching. Luckily, I found some great ways to overwinter them. I used them last year, and now my fuchsias are thriving incredibly without any complications.
Now I’m going to share my tricks with you, but first, let’s see when you should start overwintering your fuchsias!
When You Should Start Overwintering Your Fuchsias
September is the perfect time to start overwintering fuchsias! It’s important to prepare your flowers for winter before the first frost hits! If you start later, the risk of fuchsias being damaged by freezing temperatures will be high!
I usually do it right when September ends because it turned out to work best for my fuchsias. If you live in a colder area, I don’t suggest you wait until late autumn. That’s why you should watch the weather forecast and know exactly when the temperatures are getting low!
You won’t be able to overwinter them if you don’t know the best methods, so let’s check out the tricks I prepared for you.
Let’s See The Best Ways To Keep Your Fuchsias From Freezing
The first and easiest way to overwinter your fuchsias is to bring the pots where you planted them inside a garage or greenhouse.
Also, you’ll need to prune all the wilted and damaged leaves. Avoid trimming all the way down to the base, just cut one-third to one-half of the plant. This will encourage even more blooms to start appearing in the spring!
There’s no need to water them like you used to in the spring. Only if you notice that the soil is completely dry should you water your fuchsias!
Now, what should those of you who planted them in raised or flower beds do in the winter? You can’t just take raised beds into the garage, right? Don’t worry, I have a great plan you need to use!
It’s important to use mulch around the flowers or add a layer of compost for your fuchsias that are planted in the ground. This will be like a blanket that protects them when frosty days arrive in your garden!
I also wrapped my plants with straw, which proved to be good for keeping them safe.
Isn’t it a great feeling now that you know you’ll be able to enjoy fuchsias’ dancing blooms all over again next year? With the easy tricks you’ll be using this fall for overwintering fuchsias, their thriving will be guaranteed!
Luckily, I found these ways for keeping my fuchsias safe from being frozen right before winter arrives! Now all you need to do is use them on your fuchsias, too. Once you’ve seen how beautifully they bloom when spring comes, you’ll be amazed!
Good luck!
