Is Planting Store-Bought Mums In The Ground This Fall The Wrong Move Or A Good Idea?

Sharing is caring!

Mums are some of the prettiest flowers you can plant this season! They come in orange, bronze, red, pink, yellow, and green, making them perfect for decorating your garden in the fall.

I have adored these plants since I was a kid and always wanted to have them in my yard. A few years ago, I went to the florist and bought a lot of potted mums! I remember that I forgot to ask where I should plant them.

When I finally got to my garden, I had no idea where to start! There were lots of options for where to plant my mums: empty space in my flower bed, a few pots, and containers. As I didn’t want to waste time, I started searching for the best place to plant them.

Luckily, I found the right answers quicker than I thought! So, if you also happen to have store-bought mums and don’t know where to place them, I’ve got you covered. Trust me, you don’t want to make a mistake, because it can cost you!

Planting Mums In The Ground Might Be A Big Challenge

It’s true, mums can be planted in the ground, but that’s not the ideal place for growing them! Especially because they don’t like being in the cold all winter.

Even if luck is on your side, planting these flowers in the ground might require hard work. But if you’re willing and don’t have another option, you should give it a try!

Are you ready to accept this challenge? You’ll need to plant them in the ground when the soil still feels warm. Make sure to place them in the sunniest part of your garden. Then you’ll need to cut back mums to two-thirds of their size before planting and fertilizing them!

A step you need to take is putting a layer of mulch around your mums to keep their roots from freezing out.

Do you see how challenging planting store-bought mums in the ground can be? It’s not easy at all! If you want to ensure that your mums thrive amazingly, you’ll need to try another option. Luckily, I know the right place to plant them for the most beautiful view this fall!

This Is Where Mums Should Be Planted For A Colorful Display In The Fall

Replanting your store-bought mums in containers will be the best option! Here’s what you’ll need to do.

First, make sure that your containers have lots of drainage holes because that’s a must for mums! Use potting soil, grab your potted mums, tip them upside down, and remove the pot.

Now, the next step you’re going to take is called ‘teasing.’ That’s the process of loosening up the roots, it actually gives plants the signal to grow outward.

All that is left to do is place them in the containers, fill around your mums with soil, and water well! You can place these amazing colorful flowers on your porch and enjoy the view for the entire fall.

Best Overwintering Tricks You Need To Know

Overwintering your mums in containers is the easiest step. When autumn passes and winter arrives, mums will stop blooming and start to wilt.

That’s when you need to get your shears and prune the damaged leaves three to four inches above the soil. Now you just need to bring your mums indoors to an unheated garage or shed. Just make sure that the temperature doesn’t drop, and they will be safe.

It’s better to buy a container for planting mums, right? You’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful view on your porch this fall! Even overwintering them will be easy with the tricks I showed you.

But if you want to try planting them in the ground, use these steps and make sure to protect your mums over the winter! It will be challenging, but with a little luck, you’re going to make it (I’m rooting for you)!

Now, choose between these two options and plant them because autumn is officially here!
