Are you a big fan of spicy, sweet or bitter food, or even drinks? Then you should try growing herbs! Not only will they make a great addition to your meals because of their aromatic leaves, but they are also much healthier than you might think.
Herbs can make you feel more relaxed after a long day at work, boost your health, and prevent some dangerous diseases!
Do you know what the best part of growing these amazing greens is? Besides growing them in the garden, you can also do it on a windowsill! Now that’s what every gardener who loves cooking needs to hear.
You won’t have to run to your garden early in the morning to harvest them, because when they are placed on your windowsill, the herbs will be just a few steps away! Then you can use them fresh in your favorite recipes.
I always plant a few herbs indoors and the rest in my garden, because I end up growing dozens of these adorable plants (I just can’t get enough of their amazing taste)!
I have prepared seven herbs that you can even grow and harvest over the winter. I’m also going to show you all the tricks that were helpful to me while growing my herbs!
#1 With Mint, You Can Make A Powerful Tea That Boosts Your Health In The Upcoming Winter
How many times have you bought mint tea over the winter? Well, you don’t need to do that anymore! Now you’ll be able to grow it on your windowsill and have minty leaves to harvest all winter long.
Mint leaves will help you prevent and relieve cold symptoms! You can add it to your lemonade, some cocktails or even dry it to make homemade tea.
These herbs thrive best in full sun, six to eight hours a day will be enough. But they can also handle some partial shade!
If you want your mint to succeed, then you should avoid watering it daily! Watering every two to four days will give you the best results.
#2 Basil Is A One-Of-A-Kind Herb That Goes With Well With Every Meal You Make
Basil really has that unique flavor! It can be used in any dish, but it would be best to try making your own pesto with this herb.
Place basil in partial sun where it can receive at least three to six hours of sunlight. As for watering, basil loves moist soil, so it would be best to water it once a week!
#3 Chives Will Provide You With Onion-Like, Tasty Leaves Year After Year
This herb is low in calories but high in nutrients and vitamins that you need if you want to stay healthy throughout the winter! Chives taste like onion with a garlicky note and they are great for soups, omelets and seafood dishes.
I planted chives four years ago, and it still comes back every season. That’s what I like the most about this plant because you’ll get these delicious herbs year after year.
Chives are also the most interesting looking herb! You’ll be able to spot small flower heads that chives produce in late spring or early summer. These colorful flowers are also edible! Isn’t that great?
You’ll need to place chives in the sunny part of your garden, the more sun they get the better the growth will be! You’ll need to water newly planted chives regularly. After they are established you can reduce watering.
#4 You’ll Never Run Out Of Rosemary In Your Kitchen
Rosemary is one of the greatest herbs! This herb can make your dishes smell amazing and the taste…you’ll find out how fantastic it goes with meals if you grow it. Rosemary contains iron, calcium, and vitamin B6, which are great for your eyes, skin, and anxiety problems!
You can harvest any time of the year, which means that you’ll never be left without this delicious herb.
The more sun your rosemary gets the happier it will grow! Rosemary doesn’t tolerate full shade at all, so you must provide this herb with enough sun to thrive. Water it every one to two weeks.
#5 Every Part Of Lovage Is Edible, And You’re Going To Love It
If you like how celery tastes, then lovage will become your favorite herb! You can also eat the whole plant because it’s edible. Seeds are used in bread or butter, leaves in tea and soups, and with the stalks you can make adorable decorations on plates!
You can place lovage in full sun or partial shade. What about watering? It’s best to water your lovage once or twice a week!
#6 If You Love Making Pizza, Growing Oregano Is A Must
Who doesn’t like pizza? It’s a go-to meal when watching movies or tv shows! Oregano is an important part of making pizza. What’s better than sprinkling freshly harvested oregano on your homemade pizza!?
This herb is also great for your health. It can regulate blood sugar and prevent bacteria and viruses!
Basil isn’t needy like other herbs, it’s actually very easy to grow! All you need to do is place oregano in full sun and water it every seven to ten days! Easy as a pie, right?
#7 You Won’t Believe How Many Health Benefits Sage Has
Sage is an herb that is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, and just one cup of sage tea will boost your health and memory! You can dry your sage, just like other herbs from today’s list, and make a magical tea that will be your golden ticket to a strong immune system.
The last growing trick for today will be to place sage in full sun (this herb enjoys sun-soaked days). You should water it once or twice a week, but if you live in a hot area, do it every four days!
Whether you desire spices that are sweet, sour or a little bit spicy, there are herbs for everyone! With these easy growing tricks you’ll be able to create your own herb garden. These herbs will make your meals or drinks much tastier thanks to their delicious leaves!
I just finished planting my greens in containers… And guess what? You don’t have to wait for spring to grow them, if you decide to place containers on your windowsill, you can start right now!
Good luck!
