How Redbud Trees Can Bring More Birds To Your Backyard

Sharing is caring!

If you want to attract birds to your yard, you’ll have to give them something they need – food, shelter, and a place they can rest and sing their beautiful songs.

And what has all three? Why, a tree, of course!

Redbud trees are a springtime favorite in my yard. When their pink flowers bloom, they’re like an open invitation for birds – cardinals, wrens, and even hummingbirds come to visit.

If you have a tiny yard that can’t fit an entire redbud tree, you can always opt for the smaller varieties, such as The Eastern redbud or Cercis canadensis – birds love it for the insects hiding in the flowers, and in late summer, they come back for the seed pods.

So, to get more color and cheerful chirping in your backyard, starting by growing a redbud tree. Here’s what you need to know:

Orioles, Mockingbirds, And Finches Are Some Of The Birds You’ll Attract With A Redbud Tree

Prepare to be amazed with the kinds of birds a redbud tree can bring to your yard!

These pink-blossomed trees can lure a lot of our colorful feathered friends. Finches, chickadees, orioles, titmice, mockingbirds, nuthatches, and woodpeckers are just a few of the regular visitors during the blooming season.

Even tiny hummingbirds can’t resist buzzing around those gorgeous flowers (they’re both pretty and delicious!).

And when the seed pods appear later in the year, quail, cardinals, and grosbeaks might also join the bird party in your yard.

But Beware Of Unexpected Visitors

While birds bring joy and color to your yard, redbud trees can also attract some unexpected visitors.

Wild turkeys, deer, and squirrels are fans of the seeds, so you might get more than just birds once you grow these trees.

However, if these critters aren’t your favorite, don’t worry because with a little planning, you can plant your redbud in a spot where you get to enjoy the birds and minimize other visitors.

If you live in zones 4 through 9, you’re lucky because redbud trees absolutely thrive there!

I would suggest you choose a sunny spot since these trees need plenty of light to bloom. They’re fast growers in their early years, so you won’t have to wait long for them to settle in.

However, it does take about 4 to 6 years for their flowers to fully appear. Once those pink blossoms arrive, you’ll understand why they’re a favorite for bird-friendly landscaping.

Redbud Trees Are Worth The Wait And Here’s Why

I remember planting my first redbud tree and eagerly waiting for it to bloom. It felt like forever, but now I get to enjoy and admire a canopy of pink flowers and a yard filled with birds every spring.

There’s something truly unique and magical about sipping coffee on the porch, listening to birdsong, and seeing flashes of color flitting through the branches.

If you’re a bird lover (or just love a stunning tree), adding a redbud to your garden is a decision you won’t regret.
