After catching my eye from the very start, Anthurium has been a mainstay in my plant squad, never losing its allure over the years. I spend a lot of time caring for it because I don’t want a single flower to drop!
Yes, watering, soil, and light are the three things you need to be careful about, but many forget one other important factor: fertilization.
I have to admit I’ve been experimenting with different types of fertilizers and the feeding schedule until I found the perfect one.
And this is exactly why my Anthurium keeps growing and rewards me with many new blooms.
So, are you ready to crack the code to a thriving Anthurium that never stops flowering? The suspense ends here!
First, Choose The Ideal Time For Feeding
No matter which type of fertilizer you use, how good it is, or which technique you use, if you choose the wrong time, you won’t get good results.
The same applies to feeding Anthuriums!
You should fertilize them when they start growing actively, in other words, at the beginning of the growing season!
For most USDA zones, this lasts from spring until early fall.
If you’re unsure if the growing season has begun, simply observe your Anthuriums. If they’re displaying any new leaves or blooms, they’ve woken up from dormancy.
Just imagine how much energy your plant needs at this point, and you’re the only one who can help it… by feeding it, of course!
If you’re wondering if you can fertilize your Anthurium during dormancy, the answer is NO! For houseplants, things simply don’t work this way.
I learned it the hard way. I fertilized my Anthurium once during dormancy and all I got were burnt roots.
Since that’s the last thing you want for your prized plant, be patient and wait until your sleeping beauty decides to wake up.
And This Is How You Should Fertilize Your Anthurium
Now that the timing is settled, it’s time for you to learn how exactly you should feed your Anthuriums, and which fertilizer to use.
I tried different fertilizer types with different NPK ratios. If you aren’t familiar with the term, NPK refers to the ratio of nutrients written on the label of the package.
The safest and best fertilizer for these plants is well-balanced and water-soluble with an NPK ratio of 20-20-20.
If your Anthuriums are healthy, there’s really no need to use any different fertilizer. However, if the number of blooms is sparse, you can switch to phosphorus-rich fertilizer to encourage flowering.
Finally, there’s one more thing to consider when feeding your Anthurium: frequency. I always fertilize mine once a month during the growing season and it seems the plant loves it!
If you do it more frequently, the plant can suffer from fertilizer burns, and we all know how that can end up. Our goal is to get more blooms on our Anthurium, not to destroy the entire plant.
Luckily, fertilizing Anthuriums isn’t rocket science and can do wonders for your plants! So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to put on your gardening gloves and give your Anthurium the boost it definitely deserves!
