Don’t you love the peppery taste of radishes? They are a great source of vitamin C, potassium and magnesium! Boy, these nutrients can keep you healthy all season long.
As a gardening geek, I had to try planting them. A few years ago, I realized that I had never actually grown radishes before, so I ran to the nearest store and bought the seeds. Little did I know, these veggies were the easiest ones I have ever grown!
There are just a few steps you’ll need to go through until you’re able to harvest them. With that, let’s get started with the first important step in growing radishes!
Have Your Soil Tested First
You’ll need to do some testing before planting radishes. The soil should be well-drained, rich, and loose.
When I tried to plant them, my soil didn’t show the best results after testing, so I improved it by adding well-rotted manure and compost.
I recommend not using fertilizer if you already have rich soil. Also, avoid any fertilizers that contain herbicides, as they can be harmful to your veggies.
Let’s See When The Best Time For Planting Is
The great news is that you can start planting your radishes right now, in September! Pick a sunny spot in your garden where the crops will receive at least six hours of direct sun. Now let’s see what the best planting technique is!
Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and two inches apart and gently cover them with soil. Seeds will germinate in only five to eight days! Isn’t that great? Later, as they grow, you can thin out seedlings to one inch apart. This is all the work you’ll need to do! Like I said, easy as pie.
Now we’re going to move on and see how you can take good care of them while they grow!
Try This Watering Schedule
Since radishes can suffer from drought stress, you’ll need to be careful while watering. If you don’t give them enough hydration, they can develop a poor flavor. You should water them once a week or soak the soil thoroughly.
If you forget or are unsure when to water them, it’s best to use the finger test! Just place a finger about an inch into the soil, and if it’s dry, you’ll know what to do!
Keep An Eye On These Two Crawlers
Slugs and snails are the pests that love to feed on your plant leaves. They can cause a lot of damage to your radishes and ruin all the hard work you’ve put into growing them!
If you are not a fan of using strong chemicals against pests, I have a great solution for you! Try putting crushed eggshells around your plants. That can drive them away, and with this trick, you’ll be able to protect your veggies!
This Is The Perfect Time To Start Collecting Your Veggies
It’s important to know when your radishes are ready to be harvested! You’ll need to do it when they are still small, around four to eight weeks after being planted.
Pull your veggies from the ground, rinse them, and voila! Now they are ready for you to be cooked in a delicious recipe. Their leaves are also edible, so you can try putting them in your meals as well! You can store them in a plastic bag in your refrigerator, and they can last up to five or seven days.
I think we are ready to grow radishes! By just following these super easy tricks, you’ll be able to grow some of the best veggies.
They are one of the healthiest snacks you can eat every day! Since radishes are fast-growing crops, you’ll enjoy them very soon. But first, grab your planter and start sowing the seeds NOW!
Good luck!
