5 Mistakes You Should Avoid While Growing Flower Buds For A Lush Landscape All Season Long

Sharing is caring!

Are you thinking about planting some beautiful flower buds before a white blanket covers your whole garden? That’s great news! If you start planting flowers now, when spring arrives you’ll be welcomed by the most wonderful landscape.

My garden is filled with flowers every season because I always plant different varieties to get a colorful display. But one time, I almost lost dozens of flowers.

That was my first year growing flower buds, and I thought I did everything right…but little did I know! I made lots of mistakes that could have cost me all of my pretty flowers.

There were a few important steps I missed that were crucial for growing healthy and good-looking plants. Ever since then, I always do my research before starting anything new, no matter what I’m growing!

That’s when I found out about all the mistakes you can make while growing flower buds and the best ways to avoid them. So, if you’re planning to start growing your flower buds this week, I’ve got your back! I’ve listed five mistakes to help you grow the most stunning flowers.

#1 Check Bulbs That You Bought Before Planting

When you go shopping for flower bulbs, you’ll need to be careful! If you choose small bulbs that feel soft or, in the worst case, are covered with mold, you’re making a big mistake. These kinds of bulbs won’t be able to produce the blooms you want and desire!

Instead, your go-to should be the largest and hardest bulbs because they have the energy to grow the healthiest flowers.

#2 Wait For The Right Time To Plant

Planting when temperatures go down doesn’t seem like a good idea, right? Well, as for flower bulbs, that’s the perfect time to plant them! Cold temperatures actually help the roots of bulbs grow

You should start planting your flower bulbs right now, in the fall! You still have enough time to do that before the soil freezes.

#3 You Need To Choose The Location Wisely

Now the ultimate question is where should you place your flower bulbs? Let me tell you, that’s the tricky part! It all depends on which flowers you’re looking to grow! Some might require sun and some might require more shade, depending on the type.

You need to know how much light is good enough, or your bulbs won’t be able to develop into stunning flowers!

#4 Make Sure To Plant At Least One Deer-Resilient Variety

I must admit that deer are the cutest animals! But sometimes having them around your garden isn’t a good idea! Their favorite treats are your flowers, but there’s a way to stop deer from eating them.

Daffodils, allium, and winter aconite are flowers that won’t be on a deer’s menu! By planting them, you’ll keep the rest of the flowers you try to grow safe.

#5 Adding Compost While Planting Is A Must

Last but not least, the step that needs to be done while planting flower bulbs is adding compost! Just a few layers of compost will give your flowers all the nutrients they need to grow. You can use grass clippings, straw, newspaper or wood chips for compost.

Compost also plays an important role when it comes to overwintering your flower bulbs! By adding compost, the soil won’t be able to freeze and your plants will be safe through the winter.

Are you ready to grow the most amazing flower bulbs? Well, you certainly are, because now you’ve learned all the mistakes that could happen while growing them!

Now you should get going and start planting your flower bulbs! Avoid these rookie mistakes and your garden will stand out when next season comes.

Good luck!
