These 5 Safety-Proven Tricks Will Keep Squirrels From Eating Your Pumpkins This Fall

Sharing is caring!

Have you noticed holes in your lawn and half-eaten pumpkins? Forget about witches, ghosts, or pirates, this Halloween the scariest tricksters you’ll be dealing with are squirrels!

A few years ago, when I went to check my pumpkins, I was shocked by the scene I found! I caught three squirrels eating all of my pumpkins (at least they got a good treat).

Even though I was left without my porch decoration and sweet pumpkin pie, I didn’t give up on planting these crops again! But this time, I was more careful. I searched for days to find the best tricks I could use to keep the squirrels out of my garden.

There were some awesome tips, and after I tried them my problem with squirrels was solved! The best part was that they were safe to use without harming these little creatures. If you also want to deter them in the friendliest way possible, here’s what you’ll need to do!

DIY Natural Homemade Repellents

If you like watching DIY videos and making things on your own, you’re going to love this trick! Let’s start with chili peppers, which you can use straight from your garden. These spicy veggies won’t harm your pumpkins, instead they will keep all the squirrels off the radar!

First things first, don’t forget to wear gloves while you’re doing this! Don’t be like me and end up with a nasty surprise after rubbing your eyes when the work is done. Anyway, next you’re going to blend hot peppers with water and spray it on your pumpkins.

After only three or four days of spraying your crops, there won’t be any signs of squirrels!

Another option you can use is garlic. The steps are the same as with chili peppers!

Sprinkle Pet Hair On Pumpkins As A Warning Signal To Squirrels

If you happen to have dogs or cats, you might be lucky! With the help of your furry friends, squirrels will run far away from your pumpkins. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

The next time you take your pets to the grooming salon, make sure to collect their hair! I know this may sound crazy, but putting their hair on the pumpkins will signal to squirrels that there is some danger nearby!

This way, you’ll trick the squirrels and they won’t return ever again. I have dogs, and of course, I needed to try this method. The night that I sprinkled my pumpkins with hair, I didn’t spot any squirrels the next morning!

What To Do If You Don’t Have Pets?

Maybe some of you don’t have pets, but I’ve got your back! Do you know what squirrels are most afraid of? Owls!

The best thing you can do to protect your pumpkins is buy owl statues! Place them near your crops, and once squirrels spot them, they will start running away from your garden.

These cute statues won’t just drive away squirrels, but they will also be a perfect decoration for your yard this Halloween!

Make Some Noise In Your Garden!

Are you ready to throw a party in your garden? We can all agree that this might be an odd way to drive squirrels away! Playing loud music can be tiring for squirrels to listen to.

If you also have children, improvise drums with pots and spoons and let them play with them! Every loud noise will repel squirrels. But if you prefer more peace and quiet in your garden, use wind chimes!

Plant Aromatic Plants Near Your Pumpkins

It’s planting time! Luckily, there are lots of plants that squirrels can’t stand. Some of the flowers you can grow near your pumpkins include daffodils, alliums, marigolds, mint, and nasturtiums.

Plant as many as you can because their strong scent has the ability to keep squirrels away from your garden! Not to mention their colorful flowers that will beautify your yard all season long.

Protecting your pumpkins from squirrels is much easier now that you know all these super easy tricks! It’s important to know the ways to drive them away without harming these little animals. They will be safe, and your pumpkins won’t be ruined!

Now that these delicious crops won’t be damaged, it’s time to try some new delicious recipes!

Good luck!
