Plant Turnips This September For A Delicious Fall Harvest Using These Tricks

Sharing is caring!

If you want to grow one of the most delicious veggies that is full of vitamin C, then you should plant turnips this September! They are one of the healthiest crops that you can grow this fall.

I always wanted to try planting them in my garden, but I wasn’t able to find the time to do it. At first, I thought that there was a lot of work that needed to be done before they were ready to harvest.

Little did I know that turnips are pretty easy and quick to grow from seeds, all thanks to these amazing tricks I found! So, last season, I decided to use them and try planting turnips. Let me tell you, I was amazed when I saw them grow perfectly in my yard!

They turned out to be the tastiest veggies I have ever grown. You just need to follow these simple steps to get them at their peak flavor!

Let’s See The Best Planting Technique To Use

Before planting, mix organic fertilizer twelve inches into the soil. After that, you are ready to sow the seeds into the soil 1/2 inch deep.

I always use my finger to poke the holes because that’s the perfect measurement for how deep you should plant them. You should space the seeds ten inches apart so crops won’t be crowded when they start to grow.

Cover them gently with the soil and water your turnips. I know this may sound unbelievable, but they will germinate after only ten days! Isn’t that awesome?

Before that, you should water the crops a couple of times a day so they establish well. With that, the planting part is over. Now it’s time to learn how to take care of turnips before harvesting!

Try These Methods For Growing Turnips To Get A Better Harvest

After planting, you’ll need to take care of the turnips. They won’t take long to grow and will be fully ripe in no time. Here’s what you’ll need to do!

  • Place turnips in full sun. They will need at least six hours of sun to develop into beautiful crops!
  • Water them regularly. Turnips will need one inch of water once a week. When they start growing, the roots will need consistent moisture, especially if you live in an area where fall still has warmer days.

If you don’t water them well, their taste might become bitter and tough!

  • Keep your veggies free from weeds. When the crops are young, weeds could threaten their growth. Turnips will then compete with them for water, light, and all the nutrients.

So, when you first notice weeds starting to grow around your veggies, pull them by hand.

  • Beware of pests. Armyworms, flea beetles, slugs, and snails are some of the pests that will try to ruin your crops. They love to feed on the leaves or suck sap from the plant, which can damage turnips a lot!

The best protection you can use is a floating row cover. Put it over your plants, and that will definitely keep them safe!

This Is The Best Time To Collect Turnips For Peak Flavor

We’re finally reaching the most interesting (and soon-to-be delicious) part! After six weeks, you’ll be able to harvest all of your crops from the garden.

Turnips will have the best flavor if you harvest them when they are still small, about two to three inches in width. Use a spade to loosen the soil a little, then pull the root out. If you want to try your crops right away, wash them and start preparing your meals!

They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, just make sure to place them in a plastic bag.

Is there anything better than having homemade veggies that you’ve put all your hard work into planting? There’s no need to spend money on store-bought crops that don’t taste as good as the organic ones you’ve grown in your garden.

If you follow these easy tricks while growing turnips, you’ll get the most tender crops you’ve ever grown. They are rich in many minerals that we need to stay healthy, especially through the upcoming cold days.

As September is already here, you should grab your planter and start growing turnips now!

Good luck!
