Have mums already started blooming in your garden? If not, don’t worry, they will be fully bloomed by October! Since fall is their thriving period, it’s time to provide them with good care.
Autumn can’t pass in my yard without these amazing blossoms! I was fascinated by their gorgeous appearance and vibrant flowers. Yellow, orange, purple, and red colors have beautified my garden for a while now.
I’ve had mums for five years, and let me tell you, they aren’t too needy, but… mums might need your attention and love during the flowering process! Luckily, I’ve got some super easy tricks that will make taking care of them much easier.
Shall we start?
Make Sure To Place Pots In The Sunniest Part Of Your Garden
Mums are one of the flowers that love the sun! They need to receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day.
If you happen to live in an area where the temperature climbs above 80°F, then you’ll need to give them a little shade. That’s the only exception for moving them to a shaded part of your garden. This way, you’ll help the flowers last longer and they won’t get burned!
Provide Mums With Lots Of Water
Do you remember when we talked about some plants that like to get dry between watering? Well, with chrysanthemums (their second name), you can’t let that happen!
Did you spot that the flowers are starting to wilt? That means you didn’t give them enough water. So, if you notice that the soil is dry, you’ll know what you have to do! I water my mums every other day, which turned out to work well for them!
Also, the best watering technique that I’m always talking about is to NEVER wet the leaves. Water only the base of the plant. That way, you’ll prevent any fungal disease from damaging your mums!
Keep An Eye Out For Pests That Might Ruin Your Beautiful Mums
The list of pests may be bigger than you think! Aphids, spider mites, leaf miners, and whiteflies are some of the pests that will do their best to ruin your mums.
You can use strong chemicals to drive them away, but I’ve got a better solution for you! Neem oil or a strong water spray will be helpful in getting rid of them.
Ladybugs are also a great option because they will feed on these insects! That’s why you should purchase and release some adorable ladybugs in the garden. Trust me there won’t be a trace of pests left afterwards!
For Long-Season Blooms, Prune All The Spent Flowers
Pruning is the most important part of growing chrysanthemums! If you remove all the wilted blooms, old stems, and leaves, your mums will achieve incredible blooms that will last for a very long time!
Shears need to be clean and sharp. After you’ve done with the work, make sure to disinfect them. This will prevent the possibility of other flowers getting affected by disease. That’s why you’ll need to take care of your shears before and after you use them!
Tricks For Overwintering You Need to Know
Mums will bloom throughout the fall, but what should you do when winter comes? The answer is easy – place them in the house or garage!
They are sensitive to cold temperatures, and the risk of frost damage is high with these plants, which could prevent them from blooming again. So, it’s best to place them indoors and wait for spring to arrive, when you can put the mums back in your sunny garden.
Taking care of your mums will be easy as pie! What better way to do it than with these useful tricks? If you follow these steps, you’ll create the most beautiful landscape filled with colorful petals, instead of a gray fall!
The best part is that these amazing flowers will even last longer in your garden. Now gather everything you’ll need and prepare them for a showstopping look!
Good luck!
