7 Fast-Growing Shade Plants To Brighten Up Your Garden

Sharing is caring!

I spend way too much time wondering what to do with those shady corners of the garden. I mean, sure, shade might be nice for lounging around on hot days, but it’s a whole different story for plants.

You probably already know that not many plants can actually grow in shade. A few years back, I gave it a go myself, but all I ended up with were some sad, struggling plants.

This season, I switched it up with some fast-growing shade plants, and voilà! Now, those once-empty corners are thriving.

If you also want to fill up your shady spots with some greenery, here are some of the best fast-growing plants to lighten up your garden!

1. Autumn Fern Is A Seasonal Miracle

Autumn ferns add something special to the garden every season. In spring, their new leaves start out with a warm, rusty color.

Over summer they turn a rich green, and then in the fall they shift back to a coppery shade. The textured leaves make them a great addition because they are constantly changing, bringing color and interest through the whole year.

Heuchera is a semi-evergreen plant with bold, maple-like leaves that come in green, bronze, and even hints of red, yellow, and dark purple (talking about the color palette!).

Known for forming tidy clumps, heuchera produces hundreds of delicate white flower spikes from late spring to early summer.

These plants are hardy in both cold and warm climates since they can take the heat and humidity well while adding beautiful color and texture to your garden.

3. Begonias Are The Best For Shade

Begonias are a favorite for shade gardens!

With so many varieties available, they look amazing alongside other shade-loving plants and bring vibrant blooms to your late-season garden.

To keep them looking nice and sharp, make sure to feed your begonias with a balanced plant food every 2 to 3 weeks, and don’t forget to deadhead them regularly for more blooms!

Coleus is a great choice for container gardens – it can grow in shade and offer endless color combinations!

Impatiens are loved because of their bold colors and touch-sensitive seed pods. These plants are a classic choice for darker spots and are popular in cottage gardens.
