Having eucalyptus indoors is a must this year! Their beautiful long green leaves will be the perfect decoration for every home. Not to mention their scent, which reminds of a forest with hints of mint, honey, and citrus!
I tried growing them a year ago, and they became one of my favorite plants. It wasn’t all a bed of roses in the beginning! I must admit that I struggled a little bit with growing them.
Then I started doing some research and found some tips that helped me a lot! Eucalyptus will need some extra attention and care from you. Luckily, I’ve prepared some tricks that will make your experience growing them much easier! Shall we start?
Easiest Tricks You Need To Use For Growing Eucalyptus Indoors
Every beginning, no matter what you start with, is full of challenges (been there, done that)! That’s why growing eucalyptus might require some extra work, but trust me, it will pay off. If you use these tricks, these plants can live up to five years! Let’s see what you’ll need to do.
- Put them near a sunny window. You’ll need to choose a place that receives at least six hours of sun. As they are sun-loving plants, a south-facing window will be ideal!
- Select the right soil. Eucalyptus prefers a high-quality and well-drained potting mix! Their entire root system needs to be covered with potting mix.
- This is when you should water them. I usually water my eucalyptus when the soil feels dry. But the best watering schedule is to do it once a week! This way, you’ll provide them enough water to thrive.
- Apply fertilizer. Your eucalyptus might benefit from some extra nutrition! It’s best to use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month. Avoid fertilizing over the fall or winter because it can leave brown spots.
- Beware of pests. Even if eucalyptus is placed indoors, pests and diseases will get through to them easily. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, and heart rot are among the diseases that might affect your eucalyptus. If that happens, use fungicide to get rid of them!
As for pests, you should keep an eye out for aphids, scales, and mealybugs. How can you drive them away? Simply by using insecticidal soaps or neem oil!
Propagation Is Possible, But You Need To Be Patient
If you want to reward yourself with more eucalyptus leaves to beautify your home, you’ll need to propagate from cuttings! To start with propagation, you’ll need a young tree because working with older ones will be difficult.
In late summer, grab your shears and take cuttings that are about five inches long. Make sure to cut above a leaf node and remove all the leaves. For the next step, you’ll need to dip the cut end in the rooting hormone!
After that, put the cuttings in a pot that is filled with potting mix. Place the pots in a bright location and keep the soil moist! You’ll start to notice that the roots will begin to form in about a month.
So propagating eucalyptus really will be worth all the patience and time! Now you are able to grow more eucalyptus plants for free in your home!
Dry Eucalyptus Leaves For Amazing Home Decor!
Dried eucalyptus is a popular house decoration all over the world! When I discovered that I could dry them too, I tried it immediately.
How to do it? You’ll need to remove any excess foliage and then cut the stems to your desired length. Tie the stems together with a rubber band and store them in a dark and dry room. They will need two weeks to completely dry.
Get some colorful vases or printed ones and place your eucalyptus in them. Place the vases wherever you want, like the bathroom, bedrooms, or in your living room. Your house will have an amazing smell with a beautiful display.
With these helpful tricks, you’ll be able to grow eucalyptus without facing any challenges! The best part of growing them indoors is that they will last longer, decorating your house with beautiful green foliage.
I have them in every corner of my home, even the dried ones! Once I discovered how easy growing eucalyptus can be, I couldn’t stop.
All you need to do is prepare a good sunny place for the pots and start this incredible journey of growing them! Trust me, they will leave you breathless every time you walk past them.
Good luck!
