As October comes around and fall settles in, it’s the perfect time to give your lawn some extra care!
Keeping grass healthy now is super important because we have to prevent our lawns from getting dry or sick as the weather gets colder.
After making a few lawn mistakes myself (everybody in the neighborhood used to talk about my poor lawn), I figured out that the secret to a thick, green lawn is good fall fertilization.
This simple task helps your grass build strong roots so it can soak up all the nutrients it needs. Fertilizer is a healthy snack for your grass that prepares it for the tough winter ahead.
However, there’s one type of fertilizer that stands out the most – it’s natural, affordable, and you can make it all by yourself. I am talking about homemade fertilizer made from epsom salts.
If you aren’t familiar with its benefits, I’ll walk you through why you should consider epsom salts for fertilizing your lawn and how to use it properly.
Epsom Salt Is Filled With Nutrients That Plants Need
You may have heard that many gardeners use epsoms salt in their gardens (these aren’t just made for relaxing baths!).
I love using them because they are full of magnesium and sulfur, two things plants really need.
Magnesium helps plants make food from sunlight and absorb nutrients better, which keeps them strong through the winter.
If your lawn is looking a bit sad (maybe it’s yellow or patchy) that might mean it’s missing magnesium. In this case, all you have to do is sprinkle some salts around, and you’ll see how quickly they can fix your soil.
Adding Epsom salts before winter helps protect your lawn from the cold and gives your grass the energy it needs to grow back thick and healthy in spring.
Then you can relax and enjoy your lush green yard all summer long!

Just Mix Them With Water And Apply All Over Your Lawn
No worries, there’s no extra complicated steps when applying these magic salts in the garden.
All I do is mix one tablespoon of Epsom salts with a gallon of water, then pour it evenly over my lawn (yep, it’s that easy!).
The best time to do this is in early October, when the grass is still growing strong. This way, your lawn has time to soak up those nutrients before winter arrives.
Usually, one round of Epsom salt in the fall is all you need to keep your lawn happy. No need to fertilize once the first frost arrives because the grass goes dormant and can’t absorb nutrients anymore.
But if your lawn is still looking down after a tough summer, you can give it another boost in late October or early November (just wait about four weeks after the first dose).
By taking a little time to care for your lawn now, you’ll get to enjoy a beautiful green carpet of grass come spring. Just try it!
