My story begins a few years ago when I started searching for the best plants to grow in the fall. Autumn is my favorite season because of all the charming flowers I can plant! I wanted to try something new and step out of my comfort zone. That’s when I found saffron crocus!
Let me tell you, they fit perfectly into my garden, giving it a stunning fall look! So if you want to transform your flower bed this autumn, give these beautiful flowers a try!
What’s The Best Way To Plant These Beautiful Flowers?
The best thing about these flowers is that they are easy to plant and grow! Saffron crocus is great for planting in USDA hardiness Zones 6 to 9, so if you live in these areas, consider yourself lucky! So, if you are ready, we can move on and start doing some planting.
Take the bulbs and plant them three inches deep in your container or in the ground. Next, grab a trowel and gently place the bulbs into the hole with their pointed ends up and the hairy skin down.
After finishing, cover them with soil and gently tap them down, as if you’re tucking the saffron into bed! Water them well and wait six to eight weeks until these beautiful flowers start to bloom.
Try These Tricks To Keep Your Saffron Crocus Happily Thriving
After they start to bloom, you’ll need to take care of them. Don’t worry, it isn’t difficult at all thanks to these tricks I’m going to share with you that helped me a lot! So, let’s get started.
- Place them in a sunny spot. That’s right! They will need at least six hours of direct sun. The more autumn sun they get, the more beautiful petals will start to show up! If you happen to grow them indoors, place your saffron near the window.
- You won’t need to water saffron often. They aren’t demanding when it comes to watering, which is refreshing after doing it every few days in the summer. You should water these plants half an inch per week.
- Fertilize them during their active growth period. You should do this when the first leaves appear and again as the flowers start to form. NPK mineral fertilizer is the best to use. It will provide them with all the nutrients they need for healthy growth.
- Keep an eye on pests. Chipmunks and squirrels will try to feed on your flowers. You can drive them away by using garlic, peppermint, or lavender spray. They are amazing natural repellents!
As for mites, planting corms at least five inches into the soil will help keep them away.
- Try harvesting your saffron. When they are fully bloomed, you’ll notice bright orange-red stigmas in the center of the flowers. You must be careful while collecting them because each flower produces just three stigmas!
Use tweezers to gently pull them out and place them on a kitchen towel. Leave the stigmas at room temperature for twenty-four hours.
After they dry, you can use them in different dishes! They go well with every flavor, whether you are preparing bitter or sweet meals.
Now you are ready to plant and grow these good-looking flowers! Thanks to my amazing tricks, you’ll be able to keep them thriving in your yard throughout the season.
Now I can’t imagine autumn passing without planting them in my garden! I always wanted to have purple-colored blossoms to decorate my garden, and these flowers made my wish come true!
You’ll be amazed once you see how beautifully they bloom. Don’t forget to harvest saffron and try making some delicious recipes! You’re going to love it.
