If you have a beautiful large garden then growing trees is a must! They can offer way more benefits than you might think.
In the summer, when temperatures become unbearable, trees save the day by providing perfect shade. There are so many advantages I could talk about all day, but I need to tell you something even more important.
Since it’s fall, with lots of windy days, and winter is around the corner, you’ll need to make sure your trees are protected. What better way to do this than by staking them?
My trees were weak and needed support while growing. I had no idea that only certain types of wood could help my trees thrive and keep them from falling apart!
Staking wouldn’t have been easy if I hadn’t followed these simple steps. So, that’s why I’m here today! Now I’m going to show you, step by step, how to stake your trees easily and without complications. But first, let’s see…
Do You Actually Need To Stake Your Trees?
Just to be clear, not all trees need staking! So, how can you know if your trees need staking? If your young sapling starts to look weak and develops a lopsided structure, then it’s time for extra support!
Staking them when the trees are still young will help them grow straight before they develop into big, strong trees. So, whenever you spot hanging branches or if they look weakened, it will be time to stake them! If your tree looks healthy and happy, there’s no need to do that.
#1 Prepare Everything Before You Start
Before you start, you’ll need to get everything ready for staking. You can buy stakes (or DIY ones using wood) and tie cables.
Is there a prime time to start staking your trees? Actually, there is! Late autumn is actually the perfect time to start staking your trees because they will be able to grow without stakes when spring arrives!
#2 Position Stakes Around Your Trees The Right Way
For starters, use two stakes and bury them a foot into the soil, just outside the rootball. Stakes should be in line with the prevailing wind!
Now you’ll need to support the trunk with your hands as you move up the trunk when the tree is upright. That is where the tie should be attached. Bear in mind that the tie should be as low as possible on the trunk of the tree!
What you’re going to do next is attach the tree to the stakes with the ties. The ties should be made out of broad, soft, flexible material! So make sure not to use wire or rope because it might damage your trees.
Don’t cinch up the ties on the trunk; ideally, they should form a continuous loop or a figure eight between the trunk and the stakes! It should actually be fairly loose.
#3 Remove Stakes Once Trees Are Stable And Secure
Last but not least, remove the stakes! But how can you be sure that your tree doesn’t need support anymore? Leaving stakes longer than you should can damage your tree’s growth!
There’s one rule that you must follow! You shouldn’t leave stakes for more than a year. It will be enough to keep the stakes for your trees for a year or one full growing season. Later, your trees will be able to stand on their own without help from stakes!
Are you ready to stake your trees? With these three amazing steps, you’ll be able to stake them easily – no hard work required!
Staking your trees is important for growing healthy trees. There won’t be any signs of weak trees or leaning branches! Now your trees have the opportunity for a fresh start.
After just six months to a year, your trees will become stronger and healthier. So don’t wait any longer, start staking your trees today!
Good luck!
