The question of the day is – Metal Raised Garden or Wood? I know it’s a difficult choice to make. I have been looking for the best option for my yard for years!
I have a smaller garden, so I wanted to plant as many veggies as possible. Being indecisive, I had to find the pros and cons between Metal and Wood Raised beds. After some time, I found the winner!
I know you are curious and can’t wait to hear the answer! You are probably wondering who will win this competition between these two contestants (you’ll be surprised).
Ladies and gentleman, get ready, pop some popcorn, and let the games begin!
Say Hello To The First Contestant
The first to break the ice is the brave Wood-raised bed! It certainly gives off a more homey vibe, but let’s see what else it has to offer!
- Location. It’s important for your veggies to have enough sunlight. Avoid placing your wood raised bed under trees!
- Installation. It’s always challenging to play Bob the builder in your own home, but this time you can make real fun out of it. Why not even bring some friends over and spice it up with a small barbecue gathering?
After you set your crew, there are two ways to bring this beauty to life. First, you can install one that is already made, which is the easiest option if you don’t want to exert yourself.
Or, second, you can take pieces of wood and put them together like in a Tetris game. The length and the width are totally up to you!
Use wooden dowels to fasten them together. Place brackets on the corners to ensure a longer lifespan for this bed. Then, position it in the appropriate place, depending on what you plan to plant in it.
Fill it with soil and fertilizer, and everything will be ready for planting. One small tip, you can add your own DIY decorations. For example, if you’re planting cucumbers, draw them on a piece of wood.
- Pros: This is a cheap and effective way to save money. They are easy to modify: if your veggies need more space you can always expand the bed. It’s ideal for people who enjoy crafting and making their own things. Not to mention their retro and vintage vibe.
- Cons: There is a reason why you shouldn’t use it. Wood can rot quickly, especially in areas with harsh weather conditions. Wooden beds require more water, which could be a potential downside.
I’ve had wood beds for months now and they fit perfectly into my garden! Of course, don’t decide right away, you have to look at the equally excellent metal beds and decide which is the best for your yard!
Let’s See How The Metal Bed Holds Up
It’s true that a metal bed can last over 20 years, but that doesn’t mean you have to choose it for your garden.
A metal bed will give your garden a more modern look. It won’t have the cozy vibe of wood, but it will definitely complement your garden’s aesthetics. You can also customize it as you wish, maybe by sticking on some cool stickers?
- Location. Place it in a sunny area with enough water. Consider getting someone to help you set it up, this boy can be really tough!
- Fill it with soil. Don’t forget to add fertilizer or compost to ensure healthy growth for your fruits.
- Pros: This bed is resistant to everything, so it won’t rust or rot. You won’t need many tools during installation because it’s quite easy to handle. Due to its durability, it’s the best choice for you, and you won’t have to worry too much about it!
- Cons: Metal beds cost much more money. If you have saved up for a trip, you will have to pause it until next year. Metal beds have sharp edges, so you have to be careful, especially if you have small children.
Consider installing a protective cover to prevent injuries. Moreover, metal heats up quickly and becomes very hot to the touch, so you have to be careful not to burn yourself!
I’m wondering who your winner is… Whatever you decide, you won’t regret it because it will truly benefit you and your veggies! Not only will you have a cool bed for your veggies, but you’ll also have fun setting it up and planting!
If you can’t decide who your winner is, you can even consider combining these two into one stunning mix. But, if you do make your choice, remember: “There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.”
Until next time, green thumbs!
