If You Want A Cottage Landscape, Growing Catmint Should Be On Your To-Do List This Summer

Sharing is caring!

Rise and shine!

It’s time to add a new plant to your garden! There’s one special flower that you simply can’t miss a chance to grow. Drum roll please… It’s Catmint!

Catmint will win your heart! It’s a fast-growing plant with a beautiful lilac color that attracts pollinators. Best of all, it will bloom for years in your garden! Pretty fascinating, right?

As for the growing part, catmint is very easy to maintain. With your gardening skills, I’m sure it will bloom amazingly! Folks, this can only mean one thing. It’s time to see what it takes to reach the stunning growing stage!

Let’s get started!

From Cultivation To An Amazingly Good Minty Scent

Let’s explore the best tricks for growing good-looking catmint. Keeping these flowers on track will fill your garden with lilac shades and the refreshing scent of mint all summer long!

Here’s how you can achieve that in the easiest way possible.

  • Place catmint in a sunny spot. These flowers love the sun and need at least six hours of sunlight. They can also tolerate partial shade if sunlight doesn’t reach your garden.

Don’t risk it though because too much shade may prevent your garden from being filled with purple flowers!

  • Water them. Catmint is excellent for saving water, and your bills will definitely be lower if you plant them!

These plants are drought-resistant. It’s enough to water them once a week. Just be careful not to overdo it, as this can damage the roots and slow their growth.

  • You can forget about fertilizing. I’ve never fertilized my catmint, and it has always bloomed beautifully. If you overdo the fertilizer, there will be fewer purple petals! That would be such a shame.
  • Trim your flowers. This won’t be a difficult task for you at all. It’s best to give them a haircut in March at the beginning of spring for lush growth. It’s also the perfect time to trim when you see wilted leaves!
  • Protect them from pests. Catmint is sensitive to pests like spider mites, scale, and aphids. If you notice a change in leaf color, it means pests have already settled on your flowers. You can get rid of them using insecticidal soaps or a gentle spray of water.

You’ll need to keep an eye on cats. They are obsessed with catmint! Once I caught my neighbor’s kitten rolling around on my flowers. The only way you can protect catmint is to put a fence around it.

Try Companion Planting For An Amazing, Colorful Display

Your catmint will bloom happily next to lavender, salvia, sedums, and ornamental grasses! Be sure to try combining it with some of these flowers. I planted mine with white lavender, and the cool tones of catmint were the perfect match for them.

Not only will you have a beautiful view of your flower bed, but you’ll also attract pollinators! Butterflies and bees will visit your garden way more often than you might think thanks to these plants. You will enjoy their dance around your flowers throughout the sunny season!

The first day I started growing catmint, everything changed in my garden. I can’t pass by the yard without smelling these amazing minty flowers! That’s why you should definitely give them a try.

You’ve seen that catmint isn’t scary to grow at all! Just be patient, and it will pay off with beautiful purple flowers. You’ll be overjoyed when you see them proudly growing in your yard.

You can even take a few petals and put them in your lemonade or cocktail. It will give the drink a perfect minty taste! After all, nothing feels better than a cold drink on hot summer days. So, don’t waste any more time and start growing catmint!
