7 Expert Tips To Help Beginners Choose The Right Low-Maintenance Houseplants

Sharing is caring!

Starting your houseplant journey is so exciting!

Picking the right plant as a beginner can feel like choosing a new best friend – you want one that vibes with your lifestyle, doesn’t demand too much, and adds a little happiness to your space.

I remember my first plant; it was a pothos, and honestly, it felt like it cheered me on even when I forgot to water it. If you’re just starting out, don’t worry!

There are plenty of low-maintenance plants that are easy to care for and perfect for beginners. Here’s how to find the one that’ll make your home feel more alive (without adding stress)!

1. Forgetful Waterer? Meet Your Match

If you’re the type to occasionally forget to water your plants (we’ve all been there), go for a pothos or snake plant.

These beauties are basically the camels of the plant world – they store water and can survive a missed watering or two without throwing a fit.

My snake plant once went three weeks without water and still looked like it belonged in a home decor magazine.

2. Low Light? No Problem!

Not all plants need a sunny penthouse view to thrive. If your space is on the darker side, consider a ZZ plant or a peace lily

They’re like the introverts of the plant world – perfectly happy to chill in low-light corners without complaint. Plus, peace lilies even reward you with stunning white blooms!

3. Not Ready For A Plant With “Feelings”?

Some plants are divas and need constant attention (looking at you, fiddle-leaf fig), but beginners should opt for plants with a more go-with-the-flow attitude.

Try a spider plant – it’s hardy, forgiving, and even produces adorable baby plants that you can share with friends when you’re ready to spread the plant love.

4. Check Your Schedule, Not Just Your Sunlight

If you’re busy or travel often, avoid plants that need daily misting or constant care.

Succulents like jade plants or echeveria are perfect for someone with a packed calendar. They’re the definition of “independent” – just water them every couple of weeks and let them bask in bright light.

5. Start Small, Think Big

Beginners don’t need to dive into the deep end with a giant monstera or a high-maintenance orchid.

Start with smaller, simpler plants that give you confidence. A pothos or philodendron will grow with you, and you’ll feel like a plant pro in no time!

6. Listen To Your Inner Decorator

Your first plant should fit your style and bring you joy.

Want a pop of color? Try a calathea with its bold patterns.

Prefer something sleek? Go for a ZZ plant.

When your plant matches your vibe, it’s easier to love and care for it.

7. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Choosing your first plant doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Chat with a nursery expert or a plant-loving friend – they’ll guide you toward a plant that suits your space and lifestyle.

I still remember texting my friend a picture of my first pothos, asking, “Does this look okay?”. Support makes all the difference.
