The soap irritates hidden larvae, and within a few minutes they wriggle up to the surface where you can count them easily. Rinse the area afterward with plain water.

Birds can tip you off, too. When robins, starlings, and grackles suddenly swarm one part of a yard and keep pecking, they are usually feasting on something.
