1. Fallen Leaves Carry Active Fungal Spores

Those brown rings and yellow blotches tell a different story underneath, since fungal structures inside them stay active and ready to cause fresh trouble.
Ohio State University Extension points to early blight and Septoria leaf spot as the two biggest leaf diseases on Ohio tomatoes, and both survive comfortably on infected plant debris.
Those spots are not just cosmetic damage. They work more like tiny factories. Septoria forms dark specks called pycnidia inside each lesion, and every one releases spores the moment it gets wet again.
Early blight lesions run the same playbook, holding spores that wake right up once moisture and warm temperatures return.
A leaf sitting on the ground stays damp far longer than one still attached to the plant, which hands the fungus a cozy little hideout.
Warm, humid Ohio summers make the timing worse, since these fungi thrive in the exact weather tomatoes get through July and August.
Leaving debris under your plants basically stacks a fresh spore supply right below the foliage you are trying to protect.
Pick up fallen leaves while plants are dry if you can manage it. Wear gloves, work slowly, and grab the tiny scraps too. Even a shredded fragment can hold enough spores to start the whole cycle over again.
2. Wind And Rain Spread Them Further

3. Bag Debris Instead Of Composting It

Tossing sick leaves onto the compost heap feels like the responsible move. The average backyard pile, though, runs more like a lukewarm bath than a furnace.
Reliably breaking down fungal spores takes sustained heat, somewhere around 130 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, all the way through, with regular turning so outer material cycles into that hot center.
Most home piles never get close, especially the slow ones built a handful at a time. The edges stay cool even when the middle warms up nicely, which is exactly the kind of compromise a fungus is happy to exploit.

Gloves count as tools here as well. Cloth gloves worn during a blight cleanup belong straight in the wash, and rinsing your boot soles keeps contaminated soil from hitching a ride into other garden beds.
Build the habit of cleaning between plants when pruning suckers or stripping lower leaves. It takes seconds, and it stops you from personally delivering trouble straight down the row.
5. Mulch Fresh To Cover Any Missed Spores

Even a careful raking leaves something behind. Bits of leaf tissue crumble into the top layer of soil, and infested soil splashes just as readily as infested debris ever did.
Fresh mulch laid down right after cleanup puts a physical wall between that dirt and your plants.
Straw, shredded leaves, untreated grass clippings, or newspaper topped with straw all do the job well here. Aim for two to three inches, spread out to the edge of the plant canopy rather than piled up against the stem.
Black plastic and landscape fabric work too, though organic mulches come with the bonus of holding moisture through Ohio’s dry August stretches, which is a nice bit of multitasking for one simple material.

Come fall, pull the used mulch out of the tomato bed along with the plants and start next spring on a genuinely clean surface.
6. Healthy Leaves Are Still At Risk

Cleanup day ends and the garden looks fantastic. Here is the catch worth remembering: infection happens days before symptoms ever show up.
A tomato leaf can pick up Septoria spores during a Tuesday storm and look perfectly normal until the middle of the next week.
Scout your plants every three or four days after heavy weather rolls through. Start at the bottom, since early blight and Septoria almost always begin on the oldest, lowest foliage and work their way up from there.
Watch for small brown spots with pale gray centers and dark specks, which points toward Septoria, or larger brown lesions with target-like rings, which suggests early blight instead.
Pinch off newly spotted leaves the moment you spot them, dropping them into a bag carried along with you rather than tossing them onto the ground. Do this while the plants stay dry.
Airflow helps more than most people expect. Space plants generously, keep them staked or caged upright, and water at the base with a soaker hose or wand so foliage stays dry through the process.
Gardeners with a history of blight may want a protective fungicide program in place.
OSU Extension lists chlorothalonil and copper products among home garden options, applied before disease takes hold and reapplied after heavy rain, with labels followed exactly every time.
Jot down which varieties held up best this year. That short record makes next winter’s seed order noticeably smarter.
7. A Fast Cleanup Limits Next Year’s Problem

Everything done in September quietly shapes what happens next June. Early blight and Septoria overwinter across Ohio on infected tomato debris, on volunteer tomato seedlings, and on related weeds such as nightshade and ground cherry.
Take away those hiding spots and the disease has to start over almost from scratch, which sounds like a small win but pays off in a big way.
Clear the bed completely once harvest winds down. Pull stems, roots, dropped fruit, and every leaf within reach, then bag the whole lot together.
Pull volunteer seedlings the following May instead of letting them grow, since they frequently carry the same problems their parent plants had the year before.
Rotation buys real time here. OSU Extension recommends keeping tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant out of the same spot for at least two to three years, giving old debris in that soil a real chance to break down before another host shows up.
A small city plot with tight rotation space can lean on containers filled with fresh potting mix as a stand in for a brand new bed.
