Summer drought just finishes the job. By late August, some lawns have lost so much density that clover can establish itself in large sections with almost no resistance.

But for clover, those first showers are basically a starting gun. Clover seeds that have been sitting dormant in the soil all summer suddenly have the moisture they need to germinate.

And because the grass is still thin and recovering, clover gets a head start on filling in those open spaces.
