A timer helps. A rainstorm helps. Mulch helps. None of them replaces walking the tree, testing the soil, and looking closely at fruit, leaves, and irrigation.

Use a rain gauge near the tree. A gauge placed near the citrus canopy tells you far more than guessing from puddles on the patio.
