Two tools handle this, and picking the wrong one wastes a weekend. Core aeration pulls finger-sized plugs of soil out of the ground, while a dethatcher rakes the mat apart with steel blades.

For layers under an inch, aeration alone usually does the trick. Those soil plugs land on the surface, crumble in the rain, and seed the thatch with the microbes that digest it.

Once the mat passes an inch, a power rake or vertical mower earns its keep. Set the blades to nick the soil surface lightly rather than tearing deep, since aggressive settings can shred healthy turf.

Moisture matters more than people expect. Water the lawn a day or two beforehand so the ground is slightly soft, then let the surface dry before the machine rolls.

Mark your sprinkler heads, shallow cable runs, and septic lines with flags first. Aerator tines can strike buried irrigation lines you forgot to mark.

Do the work in two passes at right angles for even coverage. Leave the plugs where they fall, because raking them up removes the exact soil biology you were trying to spread.

Do all that and your lawn keeps a pleasant springiness without the mattress impression. Your feet will notice the difference before your eyes do.
