That tight zone measures maybe eighteen to twenty-four inches across. It dries out faster than the yard around it, especially during an Illinois stretch of warm, breezy September afternoons.

Measure the trunk about six inches above the ground. A two-inch caliper tree wants roughly twenty gallons at a time, delivered slowly enough that it sinks in instead of running toward the driveway.

Slow is the key word here. A blast from a hose nozzle mostly waters the sidewalk and the lower trunk.

Cheap tools work fine for this. A five-gallon bucket with two small holes drilled near the bottom will drain over fifteen or twenty minutes, and four refills carries a young shade tree through a dry week.

A soaker hose coiled twice around the root ball, left on a trickle for forty minutes, does the same job while you make dinner. Neither option costs more than a couple of takeout meals.

Aim the water where the roots actually are. That means directly over the original root ball and a foot or so beyond it, not out at the drip line where an older tree would feed.

Pull matted mulch back slightly, let the water in, then smooth it out again. Morning soaks lose less to evaporation, and the soil has the whole day to settle.

Skip the week only if you get a genuine inch of steady, soaking rain. A fifteen-minute September thunderstorm does not count, no matter how loud it was.

Leave a few inches of breathing room around the trunk so mice and voles have no cozy tunnel against the bark. A plastic trunk guard helps in rural areas where rabbits browse.

Drain and store hoses before a hard freeze, then set a reminder on the calendar for mid-April. The second and third springs still call for the same soaking routine, just with a tree that is finally starting to stand on its own.
