1. Location Is Everything
The first thing you should pay close attention to is the location. You should find a spot with well-draining soil and plentiful sunlight exposure. Most bulbs generally need 6 hours of direct sunlight during the day, so don’t choose a place where the sun only shines a little bit.
Ensure that the soil is loose by using a garden fork or tiller – this will also aid drainage.
Once you’ve got all of that out the way, it’s time to plant the bulbs. Select an area where you can dig a hole that is 8 to 12 inches deep, enough to accommodate around three layers of bulbs for springtime blooms.
2. Choose Your Bulbs
The ultimate goal is to have long-lasting blooms from only one patch, which is why you should choose bulbs that start blooming at different times. The popular choices include tulips, muscari, daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.
What you should also take into consideration is the variety and color palette you want to achieve. For spring blooms, opt for daffodils, crocuses, and snowdrops. For mid-spring blooming, grape hyacinths do wonders.
Lastly, for late-spring blooms, there’s no better option than tulips!
3. Layering Is Key
Before you put bulbs in the ground, you should add some plant food to boost their growth. First, you should plant the larger ones pretty tightly, although you should leave at least half an inch between them.
Then, cover them with 2 inches of soil and start the process again, only this time using slightly smaller bulbs. You should also leave some space so that they can grow longer stems.
The process should be repeated until all layers are done, and the last one should be covered with 2 to 3 inches of soil and some bulb food. Gently press the hole to remove any air pockets.
The last step is thoroughly watering the bulbs to give them the moisture they require to begin growing. Additionally, you can apply a layer of mulch to the area. Just be careful not to overwater the bulbs while maintaining damp soil.
All that’s left to do is wait for spring and enjoy your vibrant blossoms.
