That steady chirping you hear belongs to the field cricket, a stout, glossy black insect about an inch long. New Jersey lawns are commonly home to two closely related species, the fall field cricket and the spring field cricket, which are difficult to tell apart by sight.

Both have long, thread-like antennae, powerful back legs built for jumping, and wings folded flat across the back.

Females carry a long, needle-like tube at the rear called an ovipositor, which they use to place eggs in soil. Males lack that tube, which is the easiest way to tell them apart.

Field crickets prefer weedy edges, mulch beds, tall grass, woodpiles, and the cracks in sidewalks and stone walls. They hide during the bright hours and become active once the light fades.

Cricket-keeping has a long history in China, with some traditions dating back over a thousand years; certain enthusiasts reportedly kept them in small gourd cages.

By late August, that final molt is finished across much of the state. Suddenly thousands of adult males are ready to sing at the same time, and they all share the same goal.

Add in September’s milder nights. Crickets stay active later once the daytime heat lets up, so their singing hours stretch longer than they did during a sticky July evening.

Sound also travels better now. Cooler air near the ground and lighter breezes let those chirps carry farther, making the same number of crickets seem far more numerous.

There is urgency in it too. Adult field crickets have a limited window before the first hard frost, so males call with real persistence and females get busy placing eggs in the soil.

Crickets are cold-blooded, so their muscles fire faster when the air is warm and slower when it cools. The wings follow the muscles, and the song speeds up or drags accordingly.

Here is a simplified version of the formula, originally calibrated for snowy tree crickets: count the chirps in fourteen seconds, then add forty. Applied to field crickets, the result is only a rough approximation.

Pick a single cricket rather than the whole yard, since overlapping singers make counting messy. Sit near one steady chirper, use a phone timer, and count carefully.

Accuracy improves on calm evenings within a moderate range, roughly 55 to 72 degrees. Very cool nights slow the song enough that the math drifts, and windy conditions make the count hard to follow.

Kids love this trick, and it turns a walk around the block into a science experiment. Bring an actual thermometer along and compare results to see how close you get.

Different species chirp at different base rates, so field crickets and tree crickets will not match perfectly. Snowy tree crickets are considered the most reliable species for temperature estimates, though field crickets get you in the neighborhood.

Either way, you end up paying closer attention to a sound you probably tuned out for years, and that alone is worth the fourteen seconds.

Gardeners tend to overlook crickets, which is a shame because they provide ecological benefits. Field crickets are omnivores with broad appetites, and much of what they eat is material you would rather have broken down.

They chew through fallen leaves, decaying plant bits, and organic debris in mulch beds. That munching speeds up decomposition and helps return nutrients to your soil.

Seeds are another favorite. Crickets consume large numbers of weed seeds sitting on the soil surface, which quietly reduces the sprouting you would otherwise be pulling by hand.

They also snack on aphids, small insect eggs, and soft-bodied pests found among low foliage. Not a full pest-control program, but a helpful contribution nonetheless.

Their biggest role might be as food. Crickets feed birds, toads, box turtles, shrews, skunks, spiders, and bats across New Jersey, and their late-summer abundance arrives right when migrating songbirds need fuel.

Anglers know their value too. A cricket on a hook remains one of the classic offerings for panfish in Jersey ponds and lakes.

Everything about the chorus feels charming until one soloist sets up shop behind your washing machine. At two in the morning, the charm fades quickly.

Crickets wander indoors in September and October while searching for warmth and moisture. Basements, garages, crawl spaces, and utility rooms offer exactly what they want.

They enter through gaps under doors, unscreened vents, torn window screens, and cracks in foundations. A weather-stripping upgrade and a tube of caulk handle a surprising number of entry points.

Indoor crickets can nibble fabric, paper, and cardboard, though the damage is usually minor. The real complaint is the noise, since a basement wall reflects sound beautifully.

To locate one, wait for it to chirp, then walk slowly toward the sound. Clap once, pause, and listen for the song to resume, then close in from the new direction.

Sticky traps placed along baseboards work well and require no chemicals. A cardboard tube or a glass jar tipped on its side lets you catch and release a single visitor outside.

Reducing what attracts them helps more than chasing individuals. Move firewood away from the foundation, trim tall grass near the walls, clear leaf piles, and swap bright white outdoor bulbs for warm yellow ones.

Running a dehumidifier makes a damp basement much less appealing. Dry, sealed, and clutter-free spaces rarely host long-term guests, and the chorus stays where it belongs: outside your window.

Not every chirp or hop in a New Jersey yard belongs to a field cricket. Three common look-alikes cause most of the mix-ups.

Camel crickets, sometimes called spider crickets, are tan or mottled brown with a humped back and no wings at all. Since they cannot stridulate, they are silent, and they show up in damp basements far more often than field crickets do.

Tree crickets are slim, pale green, and delicate, and they sing from shrubs and tree branches rather than the ground. Their song is a long, even trill instead of distinct chirps.

Ground crickets look like miniature field crickets, often half an inch or less, and produce a high, buzzy note that some people mistake for ringing in the ears.

Katydids add to the confusion. They are green, leaf-shaped, and perch high in trees, delivering a raspy call that sounds like the word katydid repeated over and over.

To sort them out, listen for the pattern first. Sharp, separated chirps at ground level point toward field crickets, while a continuous trill from up high suggests tree crickets.

Then look at color and shape. Glossy black and wide-bodied means field cricket, humpbacked and wingless means camel cricket, and pale green means tree cricket or katydid.

A phone recording app helps enormously. Capture ten seconds of song, play it back at home, and compare it to online recordings until the differences click.
