A stressed tree, dealing with drought or disease or just a rough year, will often drop its acorns early to save energy. A healthy tree having an unusually good year can do the same thing, just to thin out an overload it can’t support.

Foresters call these boom seasons mast years, and they arrive every two to five years depending on the species and weather. During one, a single mature oak may set tens of thousands of acorns.

Ever picked up an acorn and noticed a tidy little hole punched through the shell? Somebody has been living in there rent-free.

Acorn weevils are long-snouted beetles that drill into developing nuts and lay eggs inside. The grubs hatch, eat the meat of the acorn, then chew their way out and burrow into soil.

Filbertworms play a similar game, with caterpillars tunneling through the kernel and leaving crumbly brown frass behind. Both pests are common across Ohio’s oak country.

Infested acorns often drop weeks ahead of schedule because the damaged nut loses its connection to the tree. Set a bowl of collected acorns on a paper towel and you may spot cream-colored grubs wiggling out within a day or two.

Good news for worried homeowners: these insects bother the seeds, not the tree. Your oak’s trunk, roots, and canopy stay unaffected.

Peek under the cap of a suspicious acorn and you might find tiny brown or tan bumps packed in there like misplaced seeds. Those are acorn pip galls.

Microscopic wasps trigger them by laying eggs in the developing nut, and the oak responds by building a hard chamber around each larva. The wasp gets a snug nursery, the acorn gets ruined.

Some gall-forming wasps attack acorns or tissues around them. Heavily damaged acorns may fail to develop normally or drop prematurely, although most oak galls are far more noticeable than dangerous to a mature tree.

Ohio hosts a remarkable number of gall wasp species, and different ones target leaves, twigs, and flowers as well. Their shapes range from woolly tufts to hard woody knobs that look almost artificial.

Most early acorn drops are harmless, but one disease deserves your full attention. Oak wilt is a fungus that clogs the water-carrying vessels inside red oak group trees.

Symptoms show up in summer as leaves turning bronze or tan from the edges inward, often starting at the top of the canopy. Affected trees shed both leaves and acorns quickly.

Red oaks, pin oaks, and black oaks decline fast, sometimes within a single season. White oaks and bur oaks resist it far better and fade slowly if at all.

The fungus spreads two ways: through root connections between neighboring oaks and by sap beetles attracted to fresh wounds. That second route explains the golden rule of oak care in Ohio.

Avoid unnecessary pruning and injury to oaks during spring and early summer, when the risk of insect-assisted oak wilt spread is greatest. Late winter is the safe window for any trimming.
