Check Out These 6 Easy-To-Grow Perennials Every Lazy Gardener Needs

Sharing is caring!

If you’re a busy gardener with little time to spare, or just prefer a low-effort approach (like me), let me introduce you to the best low-maintenance perennials. They practically thrive on their own!

They’ll fill your garden with vibrant colors, gorgeous blooms, and are perfect for cutting, all without demanding constant attention.

You can forget about constant pruning, watering schedules, or worrying about pests – these plants are tough enough to handle whatever you throw at them (or forget to throw at them).

I’ve had these beauties blooming away, even during my lazier gardening days when I’ve spent more time binge-watching shows than pulling weeds. They’re the definition of “plant and forget” and still leave you with a garden that looks like you’ve put in way more effort than you actually did.

So, if you want to enjoy a stunning garden without the sweat, here are my favorite easy-care perennials that do the work for you!

1. Hellebores aka Woodland Wonder

First up, hellebores – these little darlings are my absolute favorite.

Also known as Lenten Roses, they bloom in late winter, just when you think the garden has gone to sleep. They’re not only beautiful with their rose-shaped blooms, but they’re also deer-resistant!

Living in a deer-filled area, these plants helped me protect what’s left of my garden from these adorable critters.

Since they also thrive in shade, they are perfect for woodland gardens (if that’s what you are going for).

They even self-seed, so before you know it, you’ll have a whole field of hellebores!

2. Hydrangea Or The Infamous Ever-Forgiving Shrub

I like to think of hydrangeas as the queens of my garden. I have varieties from Annabelles to Quickfires, and thanks to their mesmerizing blooms, my garden now looks like a fairytale!

What I like the most about hydrangeas (besides their pretty flower clusters) is that they are super forgiving!

Even if you forget to water them, they’ll come back strong. Just be sure to check which variety suits your soil and climate, and you’re good to go. Plus, you get gorgeous cut flowers all summer long!

3. You Get Twice The Blooms And Twice The Fun With Azaleas

Ahhh, azaleas. Specifically, I’m all about the Encore variety.

They bloom not once, but twice a year (some folks even get three blooms!). Their vibrant flowers start in spring and return in late summer or early fall.

They’re extra low-maintenance, and once they’re planted, they’re happy to just do their thing. I love the pop of color they bring when everything else seems to be fading.

4. Spring Bulbs Or The Gifts That Keep Giving

If you’re new to spring bulbs, start with daffodils. They practically take care of themselves. I love that no animal dares to eat them, and they multiply like crazy.

I also adore hyacinths – the scent is incredible, and they’ll keep coming back year after year. Just plant them and forget about them until they surprise you in the spring.

5. Drift Roses Are Tough, Thorny Beauties

I’ve had my fair share of rose struggles, but drift roses? They’re a different story.

These smaller, mounding roses are disease and pest-resistant, and nothing bothers them – not even deer!

They bloom continuously, and you don’t even have to prune them unless you want to shape them. My favorite is the Popcorn Drift Rose, with its delightful yellow-and-white blooms

If you like roses, go with these types because they can create a mini rose garden without the kind of fuss you get with regular ones.

6. If You Want Evergreen Elegance, Go For Autumn Fern

For something that adds texture and stays green even through winter, I rely on the autumn fern.

When its new fronds unfurl, they have this lovely bronze-orange color, which is just stunning

And the best feature? It’s an evergreen fern, so when everything else dies back in winter, this beauty stays vibrant all season long.

They don’t need much care, so you’ll basically forget that you even planted them (and how awesome is that?).

I love all of these perennials because they thrive with minimal care and keep my garden looking amazing year-round. If you’re a lazy (or maybe just busy) gardener like me, give these plants a try.

With those lovely leaves and blooms, they’ll give your garden the kind of makeover it needs while you just sit back, relax, and enjoy the floral show!
