Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
If you’ve been paying attention to weather forecasts this summer, you’ve probably heard El Niño mentioned more than once. It’s one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot without much explanation of what it actually means on the ground, in your specific yard, for your specific plants. But for Texas gardeners, the 2026…
Texas storms can be brutal and fast. One hour everything is fine, and the next you’re walking through your yard assessing snapped branches, flattened plants, and garden beds that look like they’ve been through a battle. The storm passes, the sun comes back out, and then the real pressure sets in. Because in Texas, the…
If there was ever a perfect month to plant succulents in Texas, July might actually be it. While most plants are struggling to keep up with the heat, succulents are settling in like they own the place. These are plants that were designed for exactly these conditions, and getting them established during the hottest stretch…
Texas hibiscus can turn quiet just when the patio needs color most. Spring makes it look easy. Huge blooms, glossy leaves, tropical energy, the whole container acting like it deserves applause. Then July arrives with skillet-hot pots, dry root zones, and afternoons that feel personally designed to cancel flowers. The plant may still look green,…
A bare fence baking under a Texas summer sun is one of those backyard situations that feels like a missed opportunity every single time you look at it. The potential is right there, and the good news is that native vines are genuinely some of the most exciting, beautiful, and hardworking plants you can put…
Bougainvillea is supposed to be the tough one. The plant that handles heat, laughs at harsh conditions, and keeps delivering color when everything else in the garden is struggling. So when July rolls around and yours starts dropping leaves faster than you can sweep them up, it feels a little personal. Texas July does not…
Some plants make a great first impression. They’re beautiful, they grow fast, and they seem like exactly what your Texas yard needs. So you plant them, they take off, and for a season or two everything looks great. Then the problems start. They spread further than you expected, show up where you didn’t plant them,…
Formosan subterranean termites are not exactly subtle once they get established, but the early signs out in your yard? Those are easy to miss, and that is exactly what makes them so frustrating to deal with. These termites can move through soil, old stumps, buried wood, fences, decks, and landscape timbers without giving much visible…
Texas grackle season can turn one quiet tree into a nightly airport. At dusk, the sky starts moving. Glossy black birds pour in, chatter rises, branches shake, and your patio suddenly feels like it lost a very loud vote. Great-tailed grackles are social, stubborn, and shockingly organized once they choose a roost. The mess lands…
Texas fence lines tell on your yard after dark. You wake up, step outside with coffee, and find fresh soil kicked along the boards, a hole near the garden bed, and tracks that were not there yesterday. Something found the edge. Maybe an armadillo nosed through for grubs. Maybe a rat slipped through a loose…
Texas summers come with a lot of things people could do without, and roaches showing up along the foundation, slipping under doors, and gathering near the porch after dark is pretty high on that list. Nobody wants to flip on the porch light and have that particular welcoming committee. A lot of Texas homeowners are…
Rats in backyard garden areas are one of those problems that tend to get worse the longer you ignore them. They’re quiet, they work at night, and by the time most homeowners realize they have a real situation on their hands, the rats have already made themselves very comfortable. Traps and bait stations are the…
What if your Texas garden could look absolutely stunning without demanding constant attention, expensive products, or hours of maintenance every weekend? For a lot of gardeners, that sounds too good to be true. But the secret isn’t working harder. It’s choosing the right flowers from the start. Some flowers are just effortlessly beautiful. They settle…
Wasps on a Texas patio have a way of taking over the whole space. One minute you’re enjoying a meal outside, the next you’re watching a wasp investigate everything on the table with zero regard for personal boundaries. Most people respond with sprays or traps, which help temporarily but never really solve the problem for…
A full sun Texas garden in the middle of summer is one of the most demanding growing environments imaginable. The sun is relentless, the heat builds fast, and the plants that can’t handle it make that very clear in a hurry. But for the flowers that were built for these conditions, a full sun Texas…
Coyotes are smart, adaptable, and increasingly common in Texas neighborhoods. They follow the path of least resistance, slipping through yards wherever movement is easy and cover is available. Many homeowners respond by worrying, and a few respond by researching expensive fencing options that cover the whole perimeter. There is a simpler starting point, and it…
Walk through a Texas garden on a warm morning and you might spot something that stops you completely. A strange spiky bug on a tomato leaf, a fuzzy fly hovering near the flowers, or a shiny black beetle disappearing into the soil can all look pretty alarming at first glance. The spray bottle starts to…
Mulch is one of those garden basics that most Texas homeowners use without giving it much thought. Pick a bag, spread it around, move on. And for the most part it does its job well. But certain mulch choices are quietly creating conditions in your yard that rats and ticks find absolutely ideal, turning a…
If you’ve noticed large, low flying wasps making slow, deliberate passes over your Texas lawn during the summer months, you’ve probably had one of two reactions. Either you backed away slowly and went inside, or you stood there genuinely puzzled about what they were doing and whether you should be worried. Both reactions are completely…
Yarrow is one of those plants that experienced Texas gardeners quietly rely on while everyone else walks right past it at the garden center. It doesn’t have the flashiest blooms or the trendiest reputation. But spend one full season growing yarrow in your Texas garden and you’ll understand why the gardeners who know their plants…
Summers in the Texas Hill Country are no joke. Temperatures push past 100 degrees, the soil is mostly crushed limestone, deer wander through like they own the place, and rain disappears for weeks at a time. Most garden plants throw a fit and look terrible by July. But a handful of native plants actually thrive…
If there is one shrub that was practically designed for a Texas July, Esperanza is making a strong case for the title. Those bold yellow trumpet-shaped flowers just keep coming through the kind of heat that sends most plants into full survival mode, and watching it bloom confidently while everything around it looks exhausted is…
The moment that first real monsoon storm rolls across West Texas and soaks the ground, everything changes, and your garden routine needs to keep up. Monsoon season out here is not the steady, predictable rainfall that other parts of the country get. It is scattered, dramatic, and completely on its own schedule. One corner of…
Growing figs in Texas in July is a genuinely exciting thing, right up until you walk out to check on your ripening fruit and find a party happening that you definitely did not organize. Green beetles have a talent for showing up at exactly the wrong moment. In Texas summer heat, where figs soften fast,…
Bermuda grass and Texas summers were basically made for each other, and most homeowners know it. This is a tough, heat-loving turf that can handle conditions that would send other grasses into full retreat. But here is where things go sideways for a lot of well-meaning Texas lawn owners: the mower. Specifically, what happens when…
July in Texas has a reputation, and your pecan trees are fully aware of it. While the heat bears down and the soil dries out faster than you can keep up with, something important is happening up in those branches: nuts are actively filling right now, and what you do this month has a direct…
You head out to your Texas fig tree on a hot July morning, coffee in hand, ready to check on things, and instead of plump ripening figs you find a little graveyard of tiny green ones scattered across the ground. Deeply frustrating. The heat gets blamed immediately, and honestly that is a reasonable first instinct…
Texas lawns know how to start drama fast. Monday, the St. Augustinegrass looks fine. Friday, the edge by the driveway has turned yellow, crispy, and suspiciously patchy. Naturally, the heat gets blamed first. That is fair. Texas summer can make any lawn look personally offended by the sun. But chinch bug damage can wear the…
Central Texas summers do not ease in gently. One week you are enjoying a mild spring morning in the garden, and the next the thermometer is sitting above 100 degrees like it has no intention of moving. Rocky soil, blazing full sun, weeks without meaningful rain, and hard caliche underneath it all: conditions that send…
Gulf Coast gardeners in Texas know that feeling well. One minute it is a perfectly pleasant summer morning, and the next you are checking the National Hurricane Center website every twenty minutes because something is organizing in the Gulf and it looks like it means business. When a storm system starts tracking toward the Texas…
Your Texas lawn is turning yellow and brown in the middle of summer, so naturally you do what any reasonable person does: you water more. Totally logical. Unfortunately, if chinch bugs are the actual problem, all that extra watering is not going to help even a little bit, and your water bill is going to…
Most Texas homeowners spend hurricane prep season thinking about shutters, generators, and emergency kits, which is completely reasonable. But the plants growing around your home deserve a spot on that checklist too, and they rarely get one. Along the Gulf Coast and throughout Southeast Texas, saturated soil, relentless coastal wind, and heavy rain can uproot…
July in Texas already has a lot going on. The heat is relentless, the humidity is not helping, and now there is a small pile of tiny wings near your window that was definitely not there yesterday. Welcome to termite swarmer season, and yes, it can absolutely extend well into summer depending on which species…
Texas hurricane season has a way of making you look at your trees very differently. That big live oak you have always loved? Suddenly you are wondering about its root system. The pecan hanging over the driveway? Now you are thinking about those branch angles in a whole new way. When a Gulf storm rolls…
Few plants bring that particular shade of sky blue to a Texas landscape quite like Cape Plumbago. Once you have seen a healthy, full shrub absolutely covered in those cheerful clusters during the long warm season, it is pretty much impossible not to want one. Or several. The good news is that when conditions line…
You are pruning your oak tree on a warm Texas afternoon, and you spot the softest, most touchable-looking little creature clinging to a branch. It looks like a tiny piece of fur that fell from a stuffed animal. Your first instinct is to pick it up. That fuzzy little creature is the southern flannel moth…
If you have stepped outside this summer and suddenly noticed small green lizards absolutely everywhere, on the fence, clinging to vines, darting across the porch, staring at you from a shrub with zero apology: welcome to peak Green Anole season in Texas. These little reptiles have a way of going from barely visible to completely…
A backyard pond in Texas summer is not just a nice idea. It is a legitimate mood upgrade. When the heat gets serious and everything feels a little too bright and a little too loud, there is something genuinely calming about a water feature surrounded by the right plants. Soft edges, dappled shade across the…
Fire ants and Texas vegetable gardens have an unfortunate amount in common. They both love warm weather, moist soil, and rich organic matter, which means your carefully tended raised bed full of tomatoes, peppers, and herbs is basically advertising itself as prime real estate. A mound can appear overnight, seemingly out of nowhere, turning what…
What if the most dangerous wildlife encounter you could have in Texas isn’t with a rattlesnake at all? Rattlesnakes get all the attention. They’re visible, dramatic, and at least give you a warning. But there’s a creature sharing Texas landscapes that quietly transmits more disease per encounter than a rattlesnake ever could, and most people…
Hostas in Texas are already working harder than hostas anywhere else. The heat, the humidity, and the intensity of a Texas summer push these shade loving plants right to the edge of their comfort zone. They’re tough enough to handle it, but only when they’re properly set up to do so. And right now, before…
There’s something almost charming about a raccoon the first time you spot one in your Texas garden. That masked face, the curious way it moves, the almost human looking hands investigating everything it comes across. But when that raccoon comes back the next night, and the night after that, the charm wears off quickly. And…
Anyone who has spent a Texas summer without enough shade in their yard knows exactly how much difference a good tree makes. The right shade tree doesn’t just look beautiful. It genuinely changes the temperature of your outdoor space, reduces the heat load on your home, and makes your yard a place you actually want…
Texas summer evenings are supposed to be relaxing, but a cloud of gnats hovering around your porch pots can ruin the whole mood fast. Many folks reach for a spray can, but there is an old-fashioned porch plant that Texans used to keep around without even thinking twice about it. Scented geranium has been quietly…
If your Texas porch is missing something and you can not quite put your finger on what, lemongrass would like to make its case. This tall, grassy herb is striking enough to work as a genuine statement plant, smells like a fresh citrus dream on warm summer evenings, and carries a reputation for making outdoor…
Texas homeowners are pretty good at staying alert to the obvious summer hazards. Scorpions near the porch, wasps setting up under the eaves, the occasional snake along the fence line: these things get attention and rightfully so. But here is something worth stopping to think about. One of the most popular ornamental shrubs in Texas…
Hornets near your front entry have a way of making every trip in and out of your house feel a little tense. That nervous glance upward before reaching for the door handle, the careful scan of the eaves before stepping outside. Most people deal with it through sprays and nest removal, which works temporarily but…
Everyone in Texas knows about fire ants. They’re infamous, they’re everywhere, and nobody needs convincing that they’re a problem. But there’s an invasive species doing arguably more damage to Texas native habitat every single year that barely gets talked about at all. It doesn’t sting. It doesn’t swarm. It just grows, quietly and relentlessly, crowding…
July is not the month most Texas gardeners think about planting perennials. The heat is intense, the ground is tough, and the idea of putting new plants in the soil during the hardest stretch of summer feels counterintuitive. But here’s what experienced Texas gardeners know that beginners often miss. Certain perennials actually establish remarkably well…
Rats in backyard garden borders are a problem most Texas homeowners discover at the worst possible moment. Chewed produce, disturbed mulch, tunnels appearing seemingly overnight. And once rats find a comfortable spot along your garden borders, convincing them to leave becomes a real project. Most people go straight to traps or bait stations. Those work,…
Lilacs in Texas are a labor of love. They don’t have it easy in this climate, and anyone growing them here already knows the extra effort involved. But when a Texas lilac blooms, even modestly, it feels like a genuine reward for all that patience and attention. The fragrance alone makes it worth it. The…
If you have ever stood in your backyard swatting mosquitoes while wishing something would just eat them, you are not alone. Dragonflies are one of nature’s most effective mosquito hunters, capable of catching prey more than 95 percent of the time. They are faster, more precise, and more relentless than any spray or citronella candle…
Guinea Fowl are one of those backyard additions that sound like a brilliant idea the moment you hear about them. Tick control? Check. Pest management? Apparently yes. Entertainment value from watching a flock of dramatically opinionated birds roam your property? Absolutely, and that part is completely free. Texas gardeners and rural property owners have been…
If your Texas porch could use a little more life this season, and honestly, whose couldn’t, Autumn Sage might be exactly what you have been missing. Known botanically as Salvia greggii, this native Texas plant produces tubular, nectar-rich flowers that hummingbirds find genuinely hard to resist from spring well into fall. The best part is…
Have you ever walked out to your Texas garden in the early morning and locked eyes with a coyote standing right there like it owns the place? That moment of stillness before it turns and disappears is equal parts thrilling and unsettling. And once it happens, the questions start. Why was it there? Will it…
Dragonflies are one of the most effective natural mosquito controls available to Texas gardeners, and most people walk right past the opportunity to attract them without realizing it. A single dragonfly can take out an impressive number of mosquitoes in a day, working through your yard quietly and continuously without any effort from you. The…
