Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
There are flowers that are pretty, and then there are flowers that make people stop and look twice because something about them seems almost too deliberate. Too perfectly formed, too richly colored, too geometrically precise to have arrived that way by accident. These are the flowers that prompt questions from guests, slow people down on…
Most vegetables are a one-time deal. You plant a seed, wait weeks for it to grow, harvest it, and that’s the end of the story. Some crops don’t follow that rule. Cut them back, and they simply grow again. Leafy greens push out fresh leaves from the center. Green onions sprout new tops within days….
Ask any experienced Texas gardener what to do before a freeze, and you’ll probably hear the same tip. Water your plants. It’s solid advice. Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil, and well-hydrated plants usually handle the cold far better than thirsty ones. Many gardeners make a habit of soaking their beds the day…
Lavender grows wild on sunny, rocky hillsides around the Mediterranean, where summers are dry and the soil drains in a flash. Texas offers plenty of sunshine, but our humidity, heavy soils, and soggy winter spells are a different matter. That’s why lavender can be so frustrating here. Many Texas gardeners manage to get their plants…
Growing hydrangeas in Texas takes a little determination. These shade-loving shrubs aren’t big fans of blazing sun, dry spells, or alkaline soil. When they do bloom here, those big, bold flower heads feel like a well-earned victory. Once the flowers fade, though, many gardeners aren’t sure what to do next. It’s tempting to grab the…
A buck damaged your favorite sapling overnight, and the culprit wears antlers. You find bark hanging in curly ribbons and a stem stripped to pale wood. Bucks do this on purpose, and Texas hosts a large population of them. Rubbing lets them signal dominance and polish their racks. Rubs also leave scent from glands on…
Decorating for fall in Texas comes with its own challenges. It might be 85 degrees on Halloween, and those cute pumpkins on the porch are working hard just to make it through October. The plants around them need to be just as tough. Plenty of Texas-friendly flowers, grasses, and foliage plants look gorgeous next to…
At first, you might think a bat flew onto your porch. Then you look closer and realize it’s a moth, one so big its wings could cover your whole hand. This dark, dramatic visitor is one of the largest moths found in the United States. Its wings can span six inches or more, covered in…
Black flowers and dark leaves can turn an ordinary yard into a moody, eye-catching space that fits right in with Halloween decorations. These plants are not truly pure black, but their deep purple, maroon, and inky shades look almost black in the right light. They make bright colors pop, add depth to containers and flower…
On paper, podocarpus looks like the perfect privacy plant. It’s tall, narrow, evergreen, and neat enough to line a fence without much effort. No wonder it shows up in so many Texas neighborhoods. But it has a few drawbacks that don’t make it onto the plant tag. It grows slowly, so waiting for real privacy…
Much of Texas was once a sea of tallgrass prairie. Today, less than one percent of the original Blackland Prairie remains, with most of it plowed under for farms, roads, and neighborhoods. Many of the wildflowers that once painted those prairies purple and gold faded along with them. One of them is making a comeback….
Walk into almost any North Texas nursery this month, and you’ll likely hear about one tree in particular. Gardeners are snapping it up, hoping to get it in the ground before the first freeze. The reason is simple. This tree delivers the kind of fall color most Texans assume only grows up north. It’s a…
Most Texas gardeners spend the year worrying about one thing: not enough rain. An El Niño winter can flip that worry upside down. When El Niño takes hold, much of the state tends to see a cooler, wetter winter than usual. More gray days. More rain. Soil that stays damp for weeks. For fall vegetable…
Spring in Texas can feel like it lasts about five minutes. One week, the bluebonnets are blooming. A few weeks later, the thermometer is creeping toward 95 degrees. That’s a tough start for a young tree. Plant in spring, and a new tree has only a short window to grow roots before summer heat arrives….
Mums are cool-weather plants at heart. They’re at their best when fall days are crisp and mild, the kind of weather that comes easily in much of the country this time of year. Texas, of course, plays by its own rules. October here can still bring days that feel more like summer than autumn. That’s…
Few plants say “vacation” quite like a palm tree. A couple of swaying fronds by the pool or patio can make a Texas backyard feel like a beach resort, even if the nearest coastline is hours away. But not every palm is built for Texas winters. Many of the palms sold at big-box stores come…
Tomatoes and peppers love being the center of attention all summer, demanding water, staking, and constant check-ins. Garlic, on the other hand, is the quiet overachiever of the Texas garden. You tuck it into the soil in October, mostly forget about it while you enjoy cooler weather and holiday treats, and it spends the whole…
In Texas, a good shade tree is a prized possession. On a 105-degree afternoon, the air under a big, leafy canopy can feel several degrees cooler. A well-placed tree can even help bring down your summer energy bill. The catch is that trees take time. The sooner you plant, the sooner you enjoy that shade….
Texas is home to more white-tailed deer than any other state, with an estimated population of several million. If you live near the Hill Country or on the edge of town, there’s a good chance some of them know your yard better than you do. Their secret weapon is their nose. A deer’s sense of…
Crape myrtles have one more show left before winter. As the weather cools, their leaves turn shades of orange, red, and gold, and their smooth, peeling bark starts to stand out even more. It’s a beautiful season for these Texas favorites. It’s also when many well-meaning homeowners make a costly mistake. With summer blooms gone…
Every fall, grocery stores and garden centers across Texas fill up with rows of potted mums. They’re cheerful, affordable, and easy to grab on the way out the door. For many people, they’re simply part of the season. But for bees and butterflies, those pretty pots often have very little to offer. Most garden mums…
Texas summers have a way of sorting out which plants are tough and which ones need constant babysitting. By August, the divas are wilting, scorched, and begging for water. The tough ones are still standing, looking almost unbothered. Those are the shrubs worth planting. Low-maintenance shrubs handle heat, drought, and poor soil without needing daily…
Open almost any fridge in Texas this time of year and you will find the usual suspects: half a gallon of milk, mystery leftovers, and a jar of pickles that has been there longer than anyone can explain. But in some kitchens, there is also a plain paper bag tucked quietly in a drawer, and…
Who planted that magenta giant along your fence? You spot stems glowing hot pink, taller than you stand. Glossy purple berries dangle in heavy clusters under the Texas sun. Mockingbirds crowd the branches and feast there. Squeeze a berry and your fingertips stain royal purple for days. Kids will beg you for potion ingredients. Resist…
If your Christmas cactus spent the summer on a Texas porch, it’s already been through a lot. Blazing afternoons, sticky humidity, and the occasional thunderstorm can wear down even a healthy plant. So it’s no surprise when those once-firm segments start looking limp and droopy. Wilting can be confusing, because it shows up for several…
In Texas, the first real cold front of the season is cause for celebration. People pull out their jackets, fire up the chili pot, and finally open the windows after months of air conditioning. Your plants may not share the excitement. These early fronts can drop temperatures by 20 or 30 degrees in just a…
Some flowers are meant to be admired. This one practically begs to be touched. Its long, arching spikes are covered in fuzzy purple blooms that feel as soft as velvet. Brush your hand across them, and you’ll understand why so many Texas gardeners fall for it the first time they see it in person. The…
Stink bugs aren’t looking to raid your pantry or chew through your furniture. They don’t bite, and they don’t breed indoors. All they really want is a warm place to wait out winter. Unfortunately, your house fits that description perfectly. As temperatures start to dip, these shield-shaped bugs begin gathering on sunny walls, window frames,…
In a region known for dry spells and blazing sun, flooding might be the last thing on a gardener’s mind. Then a storm rolls in, and a few inches of rain fall in less than an hour. That’s when West Texas yards run into trouble. After months of heat and drought, the ground bakes hard….
Most Texas gardeners hang up their gloves in October, convinced the fun part of the year is over. Plot twist: it is just getting started. Picture yourself strolling outside on a mild late-winter morning and plucking a plump, glossy red strawberry straight off the plant while your neighbors are still flipping through seed catalogs. Smug?…
Why does your basil sulk while rosemary stands tall through a Texas cold front? Blue northers turn your tender summer herbs limp within a few hours. Rosemary welcomes that weather and keeps its needled green through frost. Brush the foliage and your fingers carry a roast-dinner scent for hours. Afternoon Texas sun suits it just…
A mole can tunnel up to about 18 feet in a single hour. That’s why a lawn that looked perfect on Friday can be covered in raised ridges and soft, squishy trails by Monday morning. Despite all that digging, moles aren’t after your grass or your plants. They’re hunting. Earthworms, grubs, and other soil-dwelling critters…
For years, this shrub has been a Texas landscaping favorite. It laughs off summer heat, thrives with little water, and covers itself in tall spikes of lavender-blue flowers that bees and butterflies adore. Many nurseries still sell it as a must-have for tough Texas yards. Along the rivers of the Hill Country, though, it’s causing…
At first glance, it seems like the perfect shade plant. Glossy, dark green leaves stay fresh all year, and in fall and winter, clusters of bright red berries dangle beneath them like tiny holiday ornaments. No wonder it found its way into so many Houston yards. The trouble starts with all those berries. Each one…
Gravel was supposed to be the low-maintenance choice. No mowing, no watering, no weeds. At least, that was the plan. Then the first sprouts show up between the stones. A few weeks later, there’s a patch of grass here, a clump of clover there, and a stubborn weed poking through the edge of the path….
Many of the grasses taking over Texas prairies didn’t sneak in. They were planted on purpose. Ranchers and land managers once brought them over from Africa, Asia, and Europe, hoping to solve real problems. These grasses grew fast, fed cattle, and held soil in place after years of drought and erosion. Decades later, the downside…
There is a specific moment every October when Texas finally exhales. The mornings turn crisp, the air smells like dry leaves instead of hot asphalt, and your poor garden hose gets its first real vacation in months. And just like that, the whole neighborhood seems to wake up. Shovels come out of garages, wheelbarrows start…
Texas can swing from shirtsleeve weather to icy mornings within hours. Your potted plants have thin walls, shallow soil, and little shelter. Roots in containers chill faster than roots in the ground. Cluster them tightly, and you create a shared pocket of warmth. Slide each pot against your sunniest wall with rims touching. Brick and…
A female Texas brown tarantula can live for 20 years or more, spending most of that time tucked inside the same underground burrow. You could walk past her home for decades and never know she was there. The males lead very different lives. Every fall, they leave their burrows and set out on a long,…
Hikers in the Texas Hill Country learn one rule fast. Never reach blindly into a thick, prickly shrub. This tough native grows across rocky hillsides and brushy pastures, forming dense, rounded clumps of spiky, blue-green leaves. Every leaf ends in sharp points, almost like a miniature holly. Those spiny leaves create a cool, shady hideout…
Late summer and early fall are when copperheads give birth in Texas. Each newborn is only about the length of a pencil, but it arrives fully equipped with venom and ready to strike if disturbed. That’s just one reason fall calls for a little extra caution outdoors. As temperatures drop, many venomous creatures become more…
Under the right conditions, this floating plant can double in size in about a week. Start with a single small cluster, and within a few months, it can blanket acres of open water. That’s what has happened on some of the most beloved lakes in Texas. Originally from South America, this invasive plant arrived in…
Most things you buy start losing value the moment you bring them home. Certain native perennials do the opposite. Plant a few this fall, and they’ll spend the winter quietly building strong roots. By spring, they’re ready to grow. Over the next few years, they spread, self-seed, or form bigger and bigger clumps. Before long,…
Anyone who has survived a North Texas summer knows the feeling of stepping outside and instantly regretting it. Then one October morning, something magical happens. The air turns crisp, it smells faintly of rain and pumpkin bread, and suddenly gardening sounds fun again. That is exactly when savvy gardeners start eyeing their shovels. They are…
Why does a tree flourish on limestone slopes while your lawn demands constant watering? Texas hillsides host a native that thrives on thin soil, and you can plant it. Fragrant pink blossoms open in spring, and pollinators find them fast. Summer brings glossy compound leaves that tolerate heat and thin rainfall. You water it lightly…
Frost cloth, old bedsheets, cardboard boxes, overturned buckets. Once a freeze warning hits the forecast, Texas gardeners grab just about anything they can find to throw over their plants. It’s a familiar scramble, and it usually happens after dark with a flashlight in one hand. In Texas, winter may be short, but it can still…
Many people fall for the desert willow in late spring. That’s when nurseries show it off in full bloom, covered in orchid-like flowers in pink, lavender, and white. It’s tempting to buy one on the spot and plant it right away. But if you want the tree to truly thrive, fall is the smarter choice….
Every fall, curbs across Texas fill up with bulging bags of leaves. Homeowners spend whole weekends raking, stuffing, and hauling, only to send all that material off to the landfill. Here’s the funny part. Many of those same homeowners will head to the garden center in spring to buy mulch, compost, and soil conditioner. Fallen…
Snake plants have a reputation for being nearly impossible to mess up. They handle low light, dry air, and weeks of neglect without complaint. There’s one thing they can’t handle, though. Too much love from a watering can. During spring and summer, these plants are actively growing, so they use water a bit faster. Once…
Crape myrtles are practically the official shrub of Texas summers. They line streets, shopping centers, and front yards from Dallas to Houston, blooming through heat that would flatten most plants. But fall is when the real work begins. As the leaves start to drop, a crape myrtle’s trunk and branches come into full view. That’s…
Plenty of Texans grew up with this tree in the backyard. It shaded old farmhouses, lined country roads, and filled spring evenings with the sweet scent of lavender blooms. Back in the 1800s, people planted it on purpose. It grew fast, handled heat, and offered quick shade. What nobody realized was how hard it would…
Two trees of the same variety can put on very different fall shows. One might blaze a deep, fiery red. The other might fade to a dull brownish yellow and call it a day. That’s why October is the smartest time to shop for fall color. Right now, Texas nurseries are stocking trees that are…
Cedar waxwings have a habit that seems almost too sweet to be real. Sitting side by side on a branch, they’ll pass a single berry back and forth, beak to beak, until one finally swallows it. These sleek, silky birds are hard to miss once you know what to look for. They wear a soft…
A bare chain-link fence isn’t anyone’s idea of a dream view. Neither is a wooden one that’s faded, cracked, and a little too close to the neighbor’s patio. Waiting years for shrubs to fill in can test your patience. That’s why fast-growing vines are so tempting. The problem is that many popular choices are invasive….
In Texas, winter rarely eases in politely. One day, you’re wearing shorts in 80-degree sunshine. The next, a blue norther blows through and temperatures plunge below freezing overnight. Those wild swings are tough on garden beds. Many Texas plants are used to heat, not ice. When a sudden freeze hits, bare soil loses warmth fast,…
Something orange catches your eye drifting over the fence, and it is definitely not a leaf. It flutters, dips, and floats off with the kind of purposeful energy that makes you stop whatever you were doing and just watch. Every fall, Texas becomes one of the busiest highways in the natural world, with monarch butterflies…
Live oaks, cedar elms, and pecans tend to get all the glory in Texas landscapes. They’re big, bold, and impossible to miss. But some of the best native trees are much smaller and far less famous. This one stays compact enough for most yards, usually topping out at a modest height that fits beside a…
