Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
Frogs showing up in your Texas yard in August might feel surprising at first. The heat is intense, conditions seem dry, and amphibians don’t typically come to mind as creatures you’d expect to encounter in the middle of a Texas summer. But if frogs have been making an appearance in your yard lately, they’re not…
A pergola in Texas is only as good as the shade it provides, and a bare pergola structure in the middle of summer is not providing much. Most homeowners who want real coverage turn to climbing vines, which is the right instinct. But choosing the wrong vine means trading one problem for another. Messy seed…
Texas heat doesn’t ease up gently, it slams the door shut on anything unprepared. When the thermometer climbs past 105 degrees, plants start rationing water just to get through the day, and most gardeners have no idea their garden is already losing the fight. The instinct is to water more, and that instinct alone can…
August in Texas is not typically the month most people think about adding new plants to a porch. The heat is relentless, the motivation for any additional outdoor effort is low, and the idea of keeping something new alive through the worst of summer feels like more trouble than it’s worth. But rosemary is different….
Yellow leaves on Texas shrubs in August is one of those garden symptoms that shows up in countless yards every summer and gets blamed on everything except what’s actually causing it. Too much water. Not enough water. Poor soil. Bad luck. August heat. Most Texas homeowners cycle through these explanations without ever landing on a…
You’ve been watching hummingbirds visit your Texas garden regularly all season. And then a heat wave arrives, and suddenly they’re gone. The feeder sits untouched. The flowers that were getting daily visits see no activity. The yard that felt alive with that constant, flickering energy goes quiet. Most Texas gardeners who experience this take it…
Most Texas homeowners who have dealt with scorpions develop a sense of where and when to expect them. Dark corners, garage floors, the occasional shoe check before putting it on. Over time, the vigilance becomes routine, the habits become second nature, and the risk feels manageable. And then August arrives and changes the pattern in…
A few grasshoppers in a Texas yard in August is completely normal. A lot of grasshoppers, the kind where they’re jumping ahead of every footstep and landing on every plant surface in sight, is something else entirely. If your yard feels genuinely overrun with them right now, that experience is telling you something specific about…
Fall tomato season in Texas rewards gardeners who ignore the calendar everyone else follows. August heat feels like the wrong moment to plant anything, yet transplants set out now have a real shot at ripening before frost shuts the whole thing down. The gardeners who wait for October are already behind. By the time cooler…
You fill your Texas bird feeder and then go about your day. But lately, during the heat wave, something is different. The feeder that usually lasted several days is empty by the next morning. Then it’s empty again by the afternoon after that. You’re refilling it constantly, and the activity around it seems almost frantic…
Robins are familiar enough birds that most people see them and move on without much thought. But if robins have been showing up in your Texas yard repeatedly this summer, especially in numbers or in patterns that feel more deliberate than a casual passing visit, there’s more to pay attention to than most people realize….
Spider mites have a way of showing up in Texas gardens at the worst possible moment. The heat is already putting plants under pressure, and then a spider mite infestation arrives to compound the stress, stripping chlorophyll from leaves and spreading from plant to plant with efficiency that feels almost personal. Chemical treatments work but…
Spider mites are one of the most frustrating summer pest problems in Texas gardens. They move fast, they reproduce faster, and by the time most gardeners notice the stippled leaves and delicate webbing, the population is already large enough to cause real damage. Chemical treatments work but come with tradeoffs, and the mites have a…
Rats near a Texas home are a problem most homeowners don’t discover until they’re already dealing with a well established situation. By the time you spot one near the house or find evidence of activity close to the foundation, rats have typically been visiting your property for longer than you’d want to know. And the…
A Texas lawn can look thirsty even when water is not the real problem. The grass along a driveway starts fading first. A sunny strip near the sidewalk turns dry-looking and dull. The shaded patch under a tree stays green, so the whole thing seems easy to blame on heat. Then the hose does nothing….
Your pepper plants looked perfect all June. Buds everywhere, leaves lush, a harvest clearly on its way. Then the blossoms started dropping, one after another, and the fruit never showed up. Most Texas gardeners blame the sun, but the real problem hides after dark. Once nighttime temperatures climb past 75 degrees, pepper plants set far…
Wasps on a Texas porch are one of those warm weather problems that escalate quickly. One nest becomes two, favorite outdoor spots become nerve wracking to use, and the casual evening outside becomes something you approach with a little more caution than it should require. Most people respond with spray treatments that work temporarily, then…
Spotting a large wasp in your Texas garden carrying what appears to be a paralyzed insect is one of those encounters that makes most people take a very quick step backward. Everything about the scene looks alarming. The size of the wasp, the deliberate way it moves, the prey it’s transporting with unsettling efficiency. The…
Cardinals are one of the most beloved backyard birds in Texas, and unlike many species that pass through seasonally, cardinals are year round residents. They don’t migrate. They stay, which means they need your yard to support them through every season, including winter, when shelter becomes just as important as food. Evergreen plants are the…
Blue jays in Texas are hard to miss. Bold, loud, and striking with that vivid blue and white plumage, they announce themselves the moment they arrive and make no effort whatsoever to be subtle about it. But if blue jays have been showing up in your Texas yard repeatedly in August, there’s more to those…
You’re working in your Texas garden, turning over some soil, and you hear it. A sharp, dry click coming from somewhere in the dirt. You look down and there it is, a small insect that, when disturbed, snaps itself into the air with an audible pop and lands a few inches away, right itself, and…
August does not scare every Texas plant. While many garden flowers fade, pause, or look worn out under relentless heat, flame acanthus keeps sending up bright red-orange tubes that seem made for the hottest part of summer. It looks bold, but it is not needy. That is the magic of this native. Flame acanthus brings…
You are out on the patio enjoying a perfectly normal Texas summer morning and suddenly something small and shiny shoots across the pavers at an impressive speed. Then another one disappears into the flower bed. And another rustles through the mulch near the fence. Before long you are wondering if your yard has quietly become…
Texas heat does not play fair, and mosquitos treat that heat like an invitation. If your evening plans have ever turned into an itchy retreat indoors, you already know the pattern. There is a plant quietly ending that pattern, and it does not need a single drop of spray to do it. This tough, aromatic…
Roaches and crickets are a fact of Texas garden life, but most homeowners accept a level of pest pressure that could actually be significantly reduced with the right approach. Chemical treatments work, but they come with ongoing costs, environmental concerns, and the constant cycle of reapplication that never quite feels finished. There’s a better option,…
If you have Texas spiny lizards in your yard, you’ve probably noticed they’re not shy about making themselves at home. Fence posts, brick walls, the sunny side of the garden bed, the top of a pot you’re about to pick up. These lizards claim their territory with confidence and hold it with an impressive combination…
A cardinal appearing in your Texas yard during a heat wave carries a different kind of weight than a routine backyard sighting. The landscape is at its most stressed, the yard is quiet in the way that extreme heat makes everything quiet, and then there it is. That brilliant flash of red, moving through the…
Growing fruit trees in Texas is a pursuit that rewards patience, knowledge, and most importantly, starting with the right trees from the right source. A fruit tree planted from mediocre stock in a climate as demanding as Texas can disappoint for years before you figure out what went wrong. But the right variety, selected by…
Most Texas wildflowers hit their peak in spring and early summer, then quietly check out when the real heat arrives. By the time afternoons are pushing past a hundred degrees, the landscape can look faded and exhausted, and most gardeners have mentally written off any hope of color until fall brings some relief. But there…
Texas porches can turn into fly headquarters fast. One warm evening, the chairs are clean, the drinks are cold, and the ceiling fan is doing its best. Ten minutes later, flies are circling the sweet tea, hovering near the dog bowl, and acting like they paid rent for the place. Basil can help change that….
If there is one backyard visitor that makes Texas wildlife gardeners stop and reach for their binoculars, it is the northern cardinal. That vivid red male perched on a branch is one of those sights that never really gets old, and the warm russet-toned female is just as beautiful once you start paying attention. But…
Your lawn is disappearing right in front of you, and the culprit stays completely out of sight. Across Texas, St. Augustine grass is breaking out in brown, spreading patches during the harshest stretch of July heat. Drought isn’t to blame. Neither are faulty sprinklers or a fungal outbreak. A tiny, sap-sucking insect hides deep in…
Spotting a raven in your Texas yard is not an everyday occurrence for most people, which is exactly why it tends to leave an impression. These are large, striking birds with an intelligence that feels almost uncomfortable to observe up close. That steady, assessing gaze, the way they seem to be evaluating rather than simply…
August in Texas is when most garden color waves the white flag. Flowers that were performing beautifully through June and July start fading, dropping petals, and retreating until conditions improve. By the time the thermometer is regularly pushing past one hundred degrees, a lot of Texas gardeners have mentally written off the rest of the…
A bobcat in your Texas yard is one of those wildlife encounters that stops everything. Whether you spot it moving along the fence line at dusk, crossing the yard with that fluid, unhurried stride, or simply sitting in the open staring back at you with those pale, unsettling eyes, the presence of a bobcat demands…
Shade trees are one of the best investments a Texas homeowner can make. But not every shade tree earns its place without creating a whole new set of problems. Messy seed pods, invasive surface roots, excessive leaf drop at the worst times, or constant cleanup that turns the area beneath the tree into a maintenance…
Most Texas homeowners spot a paper wasp nest under their eaves and immediately start thinking about removal. The instinct is understandable. Wasps and nests feel like a problem waiting to happen, especially when they’re close to entry points and outdoor living spaces. But before you reach for the spray, there’s something worth knowing about what…
Texas lawns do not always turn brown before they ask for help. Sometimes they go quiet first. By midafternoon, the bright green fades into a dull gray-blue cast. Footprints linger longer than they should. Grass blades fold in on themselves. The whole yard starts looking tired, even though nothing has technically turned crispy yet. That…
Texas July does not give garden plants a polite warning. It shows up with triple digits, blazing afternoon sun, and soil that feels ready to bake bread by 2 p.m. Tomato flowers drop. Cucumber leaves curl like taco shells. Basil bolts overnight with zero apology. Suddenly the garden that looked promising in June starts acting…
Most Texas homeowners have dealt with fire ants at some point, and most of them have made the same mistake without realizing it. It feels like the right move in the moment. It looks proactive. And for a day or two, it might even seem like it worked. But this particular fire ant mistake doesn’t…
Every Texas gardener has had that moment of standing in the garden and genuinely not being sure what they’re looking at. Elderberry and pokeweed are two plants that cause this confusion more than almost any other pairing in the Texas landscape. They share a striking visual similarity at certain stages of growth, and even experienced…
When temperatures hit one hundred degrees and your Texas garden is visibly struggling, the impulse to water immediately and often is completely natural. The plants look stressed, the soil looks dry, and doing something feels better than doing nothing. But if that watering is shallow, frequent, and spread across the hottest parts of the day,…
Cockroaches around a Texas foundation are one of those pest problems that feel like they’re always just one step ahead of whatever you try. Treatments work temporarily, conditions reset, and the roaches come back with the same confidence as before. But there’s a natural predator that hunts cockroaches at night, works right along the foundation…
Fertilizing a struggling lawn feels like the right thing to do. The grass looks stressed, it’s lost some of its color, and the instinct to give it a nutritional boost is completely natural. But if your St. Augustine lawn is showing stress during the Texas summer heat and you’re reaching for the fertilizer bag, you…
Most Texas homeowners who end up with a cockroach problem around their property assume the source is somewhere obvious. A neighbor’s trash, a nearby restaurant, some external factor they have no control over. But for a surprisingly large number of people, the real source of the problem is something they’re doing themselves, in their own…
August is one of the hardest months for butterflies in Texas. The heat is relentless, many of the spring and early summer flowers they depend on have finished blooming, and the landscape can feel barren for pollinators at precisely the moment when they need reliable food sources most. Most Texas gardens hit a gap in…
Walking out to your Texas yard in the middle of summer and finding leaves on the ground beneath a tree that should be in full growth can be an unsettling sight. Spring was fine. The tree leafed out normally. And now, in the hottest stretch of the year, leaves are dropping when they should be…
Finding a porch plant that genuinely holds up through a Texas summer is harder than most people expect. Beautiful in April, struggling by July, done entirely by August. The brutal combination of direct afternoon sun, reflected heat from concrete and walls, and temperatures that regularly push past one hundred degrees eliminates most candidates before they…
Tropical plants have found a passionate following in Texas, and it’s not hard to understand why. The climate in much of the state allows gardeners to grow plants that would be purely fantasy anywhere further north, and the visual drama that tropical species bring to a Texas garden or patio is unlike anything in the…
Texas tomato plants can look hopeful right before they start letting go. The vines are green. The flowers came. Tiny fruit formed. Then late July arrives with blazing afternoons, sticky nights, dry soil, and heat that seems to press down on the whole garden. Suddenly, little green tomatoes are on the ground. They look like…
Texas mountain laurel is one of those plants that earns genuine affection from the gardeners who grow it. That extraordinary grape scented spring bloom, the deep evergreen foliage, the way it anchors a Texas landscape with a quiet, reliable beauty that holds through every season. When something starts stripping the leaves from a mountain laurel,…
Hot Texas evenings on the porch would be perfect if it weren’t for the mosquitoes. They appear right as the temperature becomes bearable, they zero in with frustrating accuracy, and they turn what should be the best part of a summer day into something you’d rather skip. Most people reach for the spray and accept…
Most Texas gardeners think of tomatoes as a spring crop and leave it at that. When the summer heat shuts production down, they accept it and move on. But experienced Texas gardeners know something that beginners often take a full season or two to discover. Texas has a second tomato season, and the gardeners who…
Geckos on a Texas porch used to catch people off guard. These days, most Texans know exactly what they’re looking at when they spot one clinging to the wall near the porch light, and a lot of them have come to appreciate the company. Because geckos are not just interesting to watch. They’re working. And…
Seeing a hummingbird in your Texas yard in late July feels like a gift. That tiny, hovering flash of iridescent green or ruby red is one of those garden encounters that stops you mid-task and holds your attention until the bird is gone. But if you’ve been noticing hummingbirds with more frequency lately, or seeing…
Texas lawns love making summer damage look like a mystery. One week, the grass looks thick and green. Then July turns up the heat, the driveway starts radiating like a griddle, and brown patches creep across the yard with suspicious confidence. That is when the guessing begins. Maybe the lawn needs water. Maybe a tiny…
Most garden centers carry roses. But carrying roses and truly knowing roses are two very different things. Walk into an average garden center and you’ll find the same popular varieties that move quickly off the shelf, labeled with care instructions that cover the basics and not much more. Then there are the rose nurseries that…
