Florida’s warm climate and long growing season create endless possibilities for gardens. From tropical flowers and heat-loving vegetables to lush yards and palms, gardening here is shaped by sun, humidity, and sandy soils. With the right timing and plant choices, outdoor spaces stay green and productive year-round.
Mulch looks like the tidy finishing touch on a flower bed. Termites see it as a welcome mat that happens to lead straight to your front door. Florida already gives these insects plenty to work with: warm soil, steady moisture, and wood everywhere. A fresh layer of the wrong kind of mulch in the wrong…
Crush one leaf between your fingers and the smell hits like a rotten-egg sandwich left in a hot car. Tiny bell-shaped flowers open along your Florida fence line this season, pale outside with a purple throat inside. Cute, until you notice stems that twist up through your shrubs and over everything in reach. Nobody planted…
A plant that stood tall last month now droops like a wilted salad, and every guess you make feels wrong. Welcome to the Christmas cactus mystery. Limp segments send mixed signals. Thirsty? Drowning? Cold? Hot? Florida homes throw all of those curveballs in a single season. Air conditioning dries the air, humid afternoons soak the…
Tulips and Florida sound like a bad blind date. The bulbs come from a cold-loving family, and your yard never got the memo. Garden centers sell them anyway, shiny bags stacked by the register every October. Gardeners buy a dozen, bury them in warm soil, and wait. Spring comes and goes with a few stubby…
Florida fall gets dismissed a lot, and honestly that reputation is mostly undeserved. Yes, the sweeping maple displays of New England are not happening here, but anyone who has driven a back road in late October knows that something interesting is going on along those shoulders and ditches. There is a flash of deep red…
Yellow fronds, brown tips, a palm that looks tired. So you toss a scoop of lawn fertilizer around the base, and the tree gets worse. That scoop felt like the obvious move. Grass gets hungry, so does the palm, and the same bag covers both. Reasonable on paper. In Florida soil, it often backfires. Palms…
Pour a bucket of water on Florida sand and watch it vanish before you can blink. The ground drinks like a sieve. That trick catches new gardeners off guard. You plant, you water, you wait, and the seedlings sulk anyway. Fertilizer disappears just as fast as the water did, and your wallet feels every drop….
Bright red berries crowd the branches by your fence, and the birds can’t get enough. The shrub’s got a plan for that appetite. Every flock that drops by leaves with a full belly and a long flight ahead. Seeds hitch a free ride to a yard two streets over, a canal bank, an empty lot…
Your lawn has gone straw-colored, the water bill is steep, and a letter from the HOA lands in your mailbox before you finish your coffee. Florida has laws on the books that protect homeowners who want to ditch the thirsty grass. Those laws have limits, and associations know where every one of them sits. Boards…
Coontie does the tropical look without asking much in return, which might explain why it’s quietly become everyone’s favorite low-effort plant. Placement changes everything though. Full sun gives a different growth pattern than deep shade under an oak canopy, and plenty of Florida gardeners plant it wherever there’s a gap without thinking through the spot….
One lizard decides your porch railing is its throne, and from that day forward, nothing else gets a seat. Curly-tails don’t belong in Florida originally, and that backstory explains the attitude. Native lizards that used to sun themselves in the same spot start disappearing once one of these moves in, pushed out through sheer territorial…
Florida’s cooler fall days bring people outdoors, but they can also mean unexpected encounters with some of the state’s venomous wildlife. A walk through tall grass, a reach beneath a pile of leaves, or a glance inside an old shed can put you closer to trouble than you realize. From snakes tucked along garden edges…
In Florida, citrus season leaves plenty of oranges, lemons, and grapefruits on kitchen counters, but the peels often end up in the trash. That’s a shame, because those fragrant scraps have a few tricks up their sleeve. From freshening up a stuffy room to adding a little extra usefulness around the garden, citrus peels can…
Something shifts in Florida in October that most homeowners walk right past without noticing. The brutal summer heat finally loosens its grip, mornings start smelling like damp soil and possibility, and the garden hose gets a well-deserved break. While most people are busy thinking about pumpkins and holiday plans, something genuinely interesting is happening underground….
A migrating warbler can cross miles of open sky, then pass right over your Florida yard without stopping for a bite. These tiny travelers burn through energy fast, and the right backyard could offer exactly the pit stop they need. The catch is that a pretty garden doesn’t always make a useful one. Warblers need…
That tropical beauty at the Florida nursery could turn into an expensive regret after one cold snap. Warm afternoons can fool you into thinking summer will stick around, but fall has a way of throwing a wrench into your garden plans. The real kicker? Some tropical plants handle a chilly night just fine, while others…
Hurricane Isaias left parts of Florida’s Panhandle with more than a few branches to pick up. When powerful winds get hold of mature trees, the damage can run much deeper than a broken limb. A tree that still stands tall may have a cracked trunk, weakened roots, or a dangerous lean that wasn’t there before…
Storm-damaged trees can look like they need immediate attention, especially when broken branches hang over your Florida yard. Grabbing the pruning saw might seem like the smartest first move. But what if the cuts you make today leave your trees even more vulnerable when the next storm arrives? Some pruning mistakes are easy to recognize,…
Azalea hedges that grew lanky over the summer can look ragged next to a freshly mowed lawn. Shaping them now feels like good timing, especially with cooler weather making yard work more pleasant. For these shrubs, though, October is one of the riskiest times to cut. Next spring’s flower buds formed weeks ago and are…
That poinsettia sitting in your Florida yard has had a genuinely great summer. Plenty of sunshine, warm nights, humid air, all the things it loves. The result is a big, lush, deeply green plant that looks healthy and happy and absolutely nothing like a holiday decoration. Here is the thing though, all that color you…
You water your St. Augustine grass, keep up with the mowing, and the lawn looks perfectly fine before dinner. Come morning, though, strange brown patches or chewed blades have appeared overnight. What on earth happened while you were asleep? Florida lawns can attract several pests that damage grass after dark, and some are surprisingly easy…
Hurricane Isaias swept across Florida with strong winds and heavy rain, leaving many gardeners to face toppled pots, snapped branches, flooded beds, and plants scattered across the yard. After a storm like that, the first instinct is to grab the pruning shears and start cleaning up. But hold your horses. Some plants may look beyond…
Ever spotted those odd wooden knobs poking out of the water around Florida’s cypress trees? They look like something from a fairytale, yet they’re a perfectly real part of the state’s swampy landscapes. Locals call them cypress knees, and despite their strange appearance, they’ve kept scientists debating their purpose for decades. The mystery gets even…
Large sticks piling up in a tall pine near your house can be the first sign a bald eagle pair has picked your neighborhood. Many eagles start building or repairing nests in fall, with eggs often laid in winter. The same pair may return year after year, adding material each season. Florida has one of…
Your poinsettia looks healthy, the weather feels right, and Christmas is creeping closer, yet those leaves refuse to turn red. What gives? In Florida, a porch light could be part of the problem. Poinsettias follow a surprisingly strict schedule when it comes to changing color, and even a little light at the wrong time can…
Rosemary has been hiding in plain sight, and the folks who figured it out aren’t bragging about it at the barbecue. Most people stop at the roast chicken. Floridians with a bush by the back door have taken it somewhere else entirely. Some of their tricks sound like old wives’ tales until you watch them…
Plant one seedling this month and your grandkids will still be sitting in its shade. This is the long game, and one Florida tree plays it better than any other. Fall hands it a gift that summer never could. Soil stays warm, rain eases up, and the heat finally takes a breather. Roots stretch out…
Your bougainvillea looks lush, deep green, and practically bursting with growth. So why are the flowers missing in action? Florida gardeners love this plant for its color, then trim it into submission. One familiar snip, repeated at the wrong moment, trades a spray of blooms for a wall of leaves. It looks healthy. It just…
Buds are the whole point of a Christmas cactus, and yours just let them hit the windowsill like confetti nobody ordered. Florida homes make this plant moody. Warm rooms, cold air conditioning, sticky afternoons, and one sunny window can all send mixed signals. The plant reads every one of them. Nine culprits share the blame….
Your Florida orchid has survived on neglect and luck so far, but a few well-meaning habits could end the streak. This plant has strong opinions. Humid air, soft light, and a fussy approach to water all land on its list of demands. Florida homes check some of those boxes by accident, which tricks owners into…
Want your Florida garden bursting with color next season? October is your chance to get ahead of the game, while the summer heat loosens its grip and cooler days give certain flowers a better shot at getting established. The catch is that not every flower takes kindly to Florida’s fall weather. Pick the wrong varieties,…
Branches heavy with berries, acorns, or seed cones can turn a quiet corner of the yard into the busiest spot on the block. Birds and small mammals spend much of fall fattening up or fueling migration, so they go where food is easy. A few native trees produce exactly that as the season shifts. Their…
Glossy leaves that sat quietly all summer can push up tall spikes of red tubes as days shorten. Such a quick change often surprises gardeners, especially if the plant came with the house. Firespike blooms in response to shorter fall days, which is why flowers often appear as other plants fade. In much of Florida,…
Fall in the South has a bit of an identity crisis. The calendar says October, the coffee shops have switched to pumpkin everything, and yet the yard is still stubbornly, defiantly green. Meanwhile, friends up north are posting photos of fiery red and orange foliage that look like screensavers, and you are out there wondering…
Count backward from Christmas morning, and you’ll find the planting date is almost here. Amaryllis bulbs run on a tight schedule. Plant too late and the blooms show up after the tree is out on the curb. Plant at the right moment and a tall, trumpet-shaped flower greets guests right on cue. Florida adds a…
Most Christmas cactus owners get one thing backwards, and it shows up in December as a bare, flowerless plant. Florida’s warm, humid air tricks these plants into acting like tropical cousins. Gardeners water on autopilot and wonder why the buds fall off before they open. Cool nights and long darkness set the buds, but water…
Toss a fistful of seed on bare dirt, and the local birds throw a party at your expense. Seed left on top of the soil has everything stacked against it. Wind shoves it around, rain washes it off, and the sun bakes it before a single root gets a vote. Plenty of Florida gardeners spread…
Lettuce sown in late spring across much of Florida tends to turn bitter and bolt before it ever fills a bowl. Heat is the main culprit, and it is a big reason so many gardeners give up on homegrown salads altogether. Cooler fall days change that picture quickly. Several leafy greens grow faster, taste milder,…
You scrubbed the kitchen, sealed the pantry, and still caught one strolling across the floor at midnight. Somewhere in your Florida home, a hideout is going unchecked. Palmetto bugs are masters of the overlooked. They avoid the spots you clean and settle into places that never cross your mind. Pest pros open this one first…
Pansy flats show up at the garden center in October looking like a dare. Bright faces, cheap price, and a whole season of color within reach. Hold your horses. Florida plays by its own calendar, and the plants on the shelf follow the national schedule instead. A lot of gardeners take the bait, haul home…
Your desert rose drops a few leaves, and suddenly you’re staring at it like it has betrayed you. That reaction is easy to understand. One week, the plant is full and healthy. Then Florida’s weather shifts, the leaves start turning yellow, and bare branches begin to show. Is the plant simply settling into a seasonal…
There is nothing quite like waiting all year for a Christmas cactus to put on a show, only to get a pot full of green leaves for the holidays. In Florida, that can happen more easily than you might think. The culprit is not always poor care. Sometimes the plant simply has no reason to…
Walk across your Florida lawn and something feels off. The turf gives way underfoot like a cheap rug sliding on a hardwood floor. Nothing looks wrong from the porch. The color holds, the blades stand tall, and the neighbors would never guess. Yet below the surface, an uninvited crew is busy cutting the one thing…
Fido’s nose has a mind of its own, and one curious sniff after dark can turn a quiet evening into a frantic dash to the vet. Something is hopping around Florida yards that looks about as threatening as a lump of mud. Dog owners wave it off as a harmless backyard neighbor. The clock starts…
Every fall, a good chunk of backyard birds pack up and head out without so much as a goodbye. Warblers, swallows, certain flycatchers, gone. But one bird stays put through every cool morning, every breezy January afternoon, and every quiet December weekend, showing up at the feeder like it never even considered leaving. The northern…
Pampas grass spent decades as the loud guest at the Florida landscaping party. Now a quieter native is quietly taking its seat. Those towering white plumes looked dramatic, sure. They also scattered seed across the neighborhood and turned a simple front yard into a mowing nightmare. Homeowners got tired of the fight, and designers started…
Grab the loppers on the date everyone else picks, and your mango tree holds a grudge for the next twelve months. Most Florida gardeners prune on gut feeling. They wait until the tree looks shaggy, then hack away at whatever seems right. Mangoes run on a private schedule, and that habit lands the cut in…
Pull it, spray it, dig it out, and it still laughs at you by spring. Some grasses play by rules that don’t exist for the rest of your lawn. This Florida troublemaker sends roots so deep and so tangled that one missed scrap can restart the whole mess. Gardeners who win the fight usually lose…
Hose in hand, brown grass at your feet, and a choice that can go sideways fast. Water the wrong patch and you’ve poured money straight into the dirt. Brown doesn’t always mean thirsty. Florida lawns turn that shade for several reasons, and only some of them respond to a sprinkler. The rest get worse with…
Ripping out Bahia for St. Augustine sounds like a clean swap. Plenty of Florida lawns prove otherwise. Homeowners swing the sod cutter, lay fresh squares, and expect a lush carpet by summer. Instead the patchy mess keeps coming back, and Bahia pokes through like it never left. One early move decides the whole project. Skip…
Fall in Florida brings cooler mornings, golden light, and for a lot of people, a nose that suddenly has opinions about everything. The sneezing starts, the eyes get itchy, and the tissue box becomes a permanent fixture on the nightstand. Naturally, everyone starts looking for something to blame, and that tall, bright, yellow plant waving…
That cute little sea grape in the nursery pot has a plan, and your whole yard is in it. Florida’s coastal favorite looks tame at the garden center. Give it a few seasons and it blows past the size on the tag. Fences, walkways, and the neighbor’s side of the property line all become fair…
The rain stops, the clouds move on, and you step outside to find your yard has turned into something that looks suspiciously like a shallow lake. A frog is absolutely thriving out there. Your shoes, less so. Standing water after a Florida October storm is one of those yard situations that most homeowners just wait…
October feels like the perfect month for a trim. The heat has broken, the shears are sharp, and the yard looks ready for a haircut. Seven Florida plants beg to differ. They use this month to set up what comes next, and one wrong cut sends all that work straight to the compost pile. Some…
A chainsaw, a leaning oak, and a neighbor who swears you’ll need a permit. Florida lawmakers took your side on this one. A state law now lets homeowners take down a tree that threatens people or property. No permit. No hearing. No waiting on city hall. Storm season made that rule popular fast. Plenty of…
Your palm tree is a ladder, and the rats nesting overhead have been climbing it for months. Roof rats treat Florida palms like private elevators. Fronds brush the roofline, trunks give easy grip, and the crown hides a nest from every eye in the neighborhood. You hear the scratching at night and blame the wind….
Freshly planted pansies tossed onto the patio with their roots exposed are a frustrating sight the morning after you fill your pots. Squirrels are usually behind it, and the timing is no accident. Fall is when they get busy burying acorns and other food to dig up later. Soft, newly loosened potting mix makes an…
