Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
Armadillos in a Texas yard are one of those wildlife problems that tend to escalate without much warning. One visit becomes a pattern, and before long the lawn looks like something was excavating it from below, because something was. Fall brings a noticeable increase in armadillo activity across Texas properties, and certain yard conditions are…
Bradford pear had its moment in Texas. Fast growing, dramatically white in spring bloom, and widely available at every nursery in the state. For decades it seemed like the obvious ornamental tree choice. Then the problems arrived and they were impossible to ignore. Structural failure as the trees matured. Invasive spreading into natural areas. A…
Bats feeding heavily over a Texas yard in late September is one of those wildlife encounters that most people notice without stopping to think much about. The erratic, fast moving silhouettes against the evening sky are familiar enough by fall. But when the activity intensifies noticeably, more bats, more frequent passes, concentrated in the same…
Something odd happens along old Texas fence lines every September, right as the summer heat loosens its grip. Clusters of impossible, almost neon purple appear where nobody in the family remembers planting a single thing. The plant has sprawled along shady woodland edges across East Texas for generations. Somewhere between tidy lawns and clipped hedges,…
Fall is one of the most effective times to deal with invasive plants in Texas, and most homeowners never take advantage of it. The season creates conditions that make removal more effective than summer efforts. Invasive plants spreading through your property right now are at a stage where acting now prevents next year’s problem from…
The ground beneath a mature Texas tree is one of the most challenging spots in any yard to plant. Root competition makes moisture and nutrients scarce. The shade can be deep and unrelenting through the hottest months. And most flowering plants placed there simply refuse to cooperate, fading out within a season or two before…
Fall arrives in Texas and so do rats. Not always visibly at first, but the signs tend to follow quickly. Gnawed materials near the garage, disturbed mulch along the foundation, droppings in places that were clear just weeks ago. The timing feels sudden, but the reasons behind it are predictable and well understood once you…
Texas lilacs have a narrow margin for error in this climate, and September is where that margin matters most. These plants are already working harder than lilacs anywhere with cooler summers, and the decisions made in the final weeks of September directly affect how they come through the coming months and what they deliver in…
All summer long, your back porch in Texas was a quiet place to sit with sweet tea and watch the sun go down without much interruption. Then October rolls around, and suddenly wasps are circling your glass, landing on the rim of the trash can, and refusing to leave when you wave your hand at…
It is the first week of September in Texas, and a gardener is still dragging the hose out every single morning like it is the middle of August. The tomatoes look fine. The lawn is holding on. But the water bill keeps climbing, and something feels off about the whole routine. September in Texas is…
Cardinals in a Texas yard are a year round presence for most homeowners, but fall brings something different. The activity around feeders and shrubs shifts. Pairs that were nesting and territorial through spring and summer start moving differently through the yard, and in some cases the numbers increase noticeably as the season changes. If cardinals…
Rain in Texas changes the garden overnight, and one of the most noticeable changes is the sudden appearance of toads that weren’t there the day before. One toad is charming. Several of them appearing at once after a good rain tends to make most people genuinely curious about what’s going on. Their appearance is not…
Fence lines in Texas yards are some of the most underused spaces in any residential landscape. They get trimmed, occasionally planted with something fast growing, and otherwise treated as boundaries rather than opportunities. But a fence line planted with the right fall salvia becomes something considerably more interesting than a property edge. It becomes a…
There is a spider that shows up in Texas homes and garages that sends most people immediately looking for something to deal with it. It’s large enough to notice, moves with an unsettling confidence in enclosed spaces, and its appearance alone tends to trigger a very quick removal response. Before you do that, there’s something…
October in Texas arrives with a shift that experienced gardeners learn to work with rather than react to. Temperatures ease, fall planting windows open, and the garden that spent months in survival mode suddenly has real potential again. But getting the most out of that potential requires doing certain things before October, not after the…
A gardener in Round Rock steps down a flagstone path in late June, and her jeans graze a waist-high shrub with stiff, needle-like leaves lining the walkway. The air suddenly smells like pine, lemon, and Sunday roast all at once. Two houses down, the same silvery-green plant lines the mailbox walk. Three streets over, it…
A roadrunner appearing in your Texas yard this fall tends to produce a genuine smile before anything else. There’s something about the confident stride, the slightly absurd speed, the way they pause and assess everything with total composure, that makes a roadrunner sighting feel like a small gift from the landscape. But if one has…
There is a native Texas shrub that produces flowers unlike almost anything else in the residential garden. They’re twisted, partially closed, and structurally odd in a way that makes most people stop and look twice before they’re sure about what they’re seeing. It does not look like a typical garden flower. It looks like something…
Not every plant in a naturalistic Texas garden needs to announce itself. Some of the most valuable ones are the quiet ones. The plants that fill space effortlessly, move beautifully in a breeze, and create the kind of layered, unhurried look that takes years to achieve when you’re working against the landscape rather than with…
Deer that kept a respectful distance through most of the year become a different kind of problem in September. The boldness picks up. Yards that were left alone through summer suddenly start showing damage. Plants that survived the heat without any browsing pressure get hit overnight in ways that feel almost personal. This is not…
Fall is one of the best planting seasons Texas offers, and the gardeners who know this move quickly. Native plants, shade trees, drought tolerant shrubs, and perennials that establish best in cooler conditions all move fast once the nurseries stock them for fall. Wait too long and the best selections are gone, replaced by whatever…
It is 2 a.m. in a quiet Dallas neighborhood, and somebody bolts upright in bed, certain a car alarm is wailing in the driveway right outside their window. Sneakers on, porch light flipped, eyes scanning the street. Nothing there. Then a slim gray bird on the streetlight tips its head back and runs the whole…
Texas front porches in September have a certain nervous energy, somewhere between a welcome mat and a dare. You reach for the door handle, then pause, because something up there clearly keeps watching you. Most folks respond with a rolled-up newspaper, a can of spray, or a truly athletic sprint. None of that fixes the…
Texas porches in fall deserve better than leftover summer containers that gave up months ago. The heat that made summer porch gardening so difficult has finally eased, and the conditions that arrive with fall in Texas are genuinely favorable for some of the most rewarding container planting of the entire year. Color that holds through…
September shifts the wildlife calendar in Texas in ways that most homeowners notice without fully understanding. Animals that were relatively easy to ignore through summer suddenly become more visible and active. In some cases, they’re more likely to turn up in your yard, on your porch, or somewhere you weren’t expecting. Encounters that were occasional…
Most Texas homeowners choosing a shade tree reach for the same familiar options. Live oak, cedar elm, crape myrtle. These are solid choices, and they’re popular for good reasons. But there is one native Texas shade tree that consistently outperforms several of these more celebrated options in ways that most homeowners never discover. Simply because…
Did you know that some of the most damaging garden pests in Texas don’t peak in the heat of summer but arrive right as September begins to cool things down? Most Texas gardeners spend the year bracing for summer pest pressure and then relax when fall approaches, assuming the worst is behind them. It isn’t….
Most Texas backyard orchards tell the same story. Peaches, figs, maybe a citrus tree or two. These are solid choices, and they earn their place. But there is a native Texas fruit tree that is quietly gaining attention among gardeners who want something different. Something with deep roots in the Texas landscape, genuine wildlife value,…
The brown patch near the driveway looked like ordinary drought stress until it kept spreading, even after a full week of deep watering aimed right at the roots. Pull the grass apart at the edge of that patch, and you might spot tiny black insects with white X-marked wings hiding in there. That is the…
Late summer in Texas brings sticky heat, loud cicadas, and something strange draped across the branches overhead. From the road, it looks like somebody tossed old lace curtains high into the treetops. Drive past a country fence line in September and you might count dozens of pale gray bundles. They shimmer slightly when the wind…
Blue jays are not subtle visitors. When they’re in a Texas yard, you know it. Loud, bold, and impossible to overlook, they announce themselves from the moment they arrive. But if blue jays have been unusually persistent in your Texas yard this September, staying longer, appearing in greater numbers, and returning more frequently than feels…
Bermuda grass in Texas is built for punishment, and it takes its share through summer. The heat, the drought, the relentless intensity of a Texas August all push Bermuda to its limits in ways that leave it looking significantly more tired by September than most homeowners expected when they chose it for its toughness. September…
September in Texas is supposed to feel like a turning point. The worst of the heat is behind you, the air begins to shift, and the garden that endured months of punishment should start showing signs of recovery. For a lot of Texas gardens, though, the exhaustion that built through summer doesn’t simply lift when…
By fall, most Texas annual beds have given everything they’re going to give. The plants that looked full and vibrant in spring are tired, sparse, and past their best in a way that no amount of deadheading or fertilizing is going to fix. Most homeowners either replant with fall annuals and start the cycle over,…
If the green anoles that were darting around your Texas yard all spring and summer have suddenly disappeared, you’ve probably noticed the absence even if you didn’t consciously track their presence before. These small, vivid lizards have a way of becoming part of the visual rhythm of a Texas yard, and when that rhythm breaks,…
By late August, the petunias out front have gone leggy and pale, the vinca looks sunburned, and the whole bed seems to be begging for mercy from the heat. Then the first real September storm rolls through, soaks the ground for an hour, and three days later slim red stalks push straight up through the…
September in Texas still feels like a furnace somebody forgot to switch off after Labor Day weekend. The garden looks worn out and dusty, and honestly, so does anyone standing out there holding a hose. Right about now, plenty of gardeners head outside with good intentions and a sudden urge to tidy everything. It feels…
Wet spots in Texas yards are one of those landscape features that most homeowners spend years fighting rather than working with. Low areas that hold water after rain, spots near downspouts that stay consistently damp, drainage zones that never quite dry out. Most plants placed there struggle or fail, which makes these areas feel like…
Most Texas gardens hit a bloom gap in fall. The summer performers have faded, the spring planted annuals are long gone, and the bees still active in October and November are searching a landscape that is offering less and less with every passing week. For native bees building winter reserves, that gap is a genuine…
Crape myrtles are one of the most reliably beautiful trees in the Texas landscape, and for most of the year they deliver exactly what homeowners plant them for. But an invasive pest has been spreading through Texas crape myrtle populations at a pace that has caught tree specialists and homeowners completely off guard. The damage…
Have you ever noticed how certain garden plants seem to glow even on the hottest, brightest Texas afternoon? That effect almost always traces back to silver or grey foliage, and once you start using it deliberately in a Texas garden, the transformation is genuinely striking. Silver leaved plants do something green foliage simply cannot. They…
An armadillo in your Texas yard produces equal parts amusement and exasperation. That armored, prehistoric looking creature digging methodically through your lawn at dusk is genuinely fascinating to watch right up until you see the holes it left behind. And if it keeps coming back night after night, the amusement wears off considerably faster than…
You flip on the hallway light at midnight and something small darts across the baseboard behind the couch. Your heart does a quick tap dance long before your brain finally catches up with reality. Texas homes tend to collect quiet visitors once the weather shifts and the evenings finally turn cooler. They slip inside through…
Fall vegetable gardening in Texas comes with welcome relief from summer’s most intense pressure, but it doesn’t come pest free. The cooler temperatures that make fall planting so rewarding also suit a specific group of pests very well, and Texas fall gardens can face significant damage from insects that thrive in exactly the conditions that…
What if your Texas garden looked its best in October instead of fading out right when the weather finally becomes enjoyable? Most gardens wind down just as conditions turn in their favor. The brutal heat backs off, the air becomes pleasant, and the outdoor spaces that felt unbearable through summer suddenly become exactly where you…
Hummingbirds are already remarkable for reasons most people could list without thinking too hard. The speed, the hovering, the iridescent colors, the impossibly fast wingbeats. But there is one specific ability that tends to stop people mid-sentence when they first really notice it happening at their Texas feeder. Hummingbirds can drink nectar upside down. Not…
Texas roses earn their rest after summer. They’ve pushed through months of heat, humidity, and sustained stress that would defeat most flowering plants. By the time summer eases, most rose bushes are showing exactly what the season asked of them. Spent canes, tired foliage, and a general look of plants that are ready for something…
The return of dark-eyed juncos to a Texas yard is one of those seasonal signals that experienced backyard bird watchers watch for every fall. These small, sharply marked birds spend their summers further north and move into Texas when temperatures drop, and the morning you spot the first one marks a shift in the season…
Three nurseries. Same question at every counter. Two staff members who had never even heard the name before. That is what it takes right now to track down Texas persimmon anywhere near a Texas city, and the search alone tells you something important about this tree. Big-box garden centers stock what sells fast and ships…
Texas finally exhales in early fall, trading blistering afternoons for mornings that feel almost polite and breezy. Everybody heads back outside again, boots crunching through dry grass, dusty caliche, and crisp fallen mesquite leaves. The trouble is that people are not the only Texans quietly celebrating this glorious autumn cooldown. Certain long, patient neighbors have…
Texas gardens can be tough places to grow pretty flowers. The heat gets fierce, rain comes and goes, and hydrangeas often struggle to keep up. While hydrangeas look lovely in cooler states, they can wilt fast under the hot Texas sun. Luckily, there are plenty of flowering shrubs that thrive here and put on an…
There’s a shift that happens in the Texas landscape as summer heat finally begins to ease and fall approaches. The colors that dominated through the long hot months start giving way to something different, and one native Texas plant leads that transition more visibly and more reliably than almost anything else in the late season…
Most Texas homeowners who want more cardinals in their yard head straight for the bird feeder section. And feeders help. Cardinals use them reliably and are easy to attract with the right seed. But if your goal is cardinals that stay, cardinals that nest, cardinals that become a consistent and dependable presence in your yard…
Concrete patio heat in Texas is brutal. The surface absorbs heat all day and radiates it back through the afternoon and evening, creating a microclimate that runs significantly hotter than the surrounding yard. Most container plants placed there either struggle visibly or demand so much attention that the effort stops feeling worthwhile. Red yucca doesn’t…
Oak trees and Texas go together in a way that feels almost elemental. But for homeowners with smaller residential lots, the species that first come to mind, live oaks spreading sixty feet wide, post oaks commanding large open spaces, can feel like they belong in a different landscape entirely. The scale is wrong, the root…
Drive through a stretch of North Texas prairie a year after a grass fire, and one image stands out from the wreckage. Blackened fence posts, charred cedar skeletons, and standing right in the middle of it all, a wide old bur oak with scorched bark and a full green canopy overhead. That contrast is not…
Small holes in a Texas lawn send many homeowners straight to the worst explanation available. Snakes. Rats. Something tunneling under the roots and destroying everything from below. The pest control number gets dialed before anyone has looked closely at a single hole. Texas yards produce holes and mounds from a surprisingly long list of causes,…
