TEXAS

Not every Texas plant is content with sunshine and water. Deep in the Big Thicket of East Texas, some of them catch their own dinner. Carnivorous plants have been fascinating people for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. Some snap shut on unsuspecting flies. Others lure insects into slippery, tube-shaped traps they can’t climb…

Some berries disappear the moment they ripen. Birds strip the branches clean in a few days, and that’s the end of the buffet. This native shrub plays a longer game. In fall, its arching stems fill up with clusters of small, pinkish-purple berries that cling tightly along the branches. They stay put for weeks, often…

In the Texas Panhandle, the mower might be parked by Halloween. Down in the Rio Grande Valley, it could still be running at Christmas. That’s the thing about lawn care in a state this big. There’s no single date that works for everyone. Most Texas lawns are made up of warm-season grasses that love heat…

West Texas isn’t known for being gentle on plants. Scorching sun, rocky ground, and long stretches without rain turn many gardens into a struggle by late summer. Then fall rolls in, and one tough little native lights up the landscape. It forms a neat, rounded mound covered in tiny, thread-like leaves that look almost lacy….

Something is happening in Texas yards this fall, and it is moving fast. One minute the garden is quiet, and the next there are bright orange wings zipping past the porch like someone tossed a handful of confetti into the breeze. Land on a flower, flash a little silver underneath, and off they go again….

A saw in your hands can attract a tiny insect to your oak. Sap beetles are drawn to the scent of fresh cuts. They carry oak wilt fungus on their bodies, and that fungus spreads through roots. Texas live oaks face peak risk when you trim February through June. Beetles stay active from spring through…

In Texas, fall is prime time for these sticky surprises. Long, warm days keep insects buzzing well into autumn, and spiders are taking full advantage. Many of them have grown to their biggest size of the year, and they’re spinning large, round webs between shrubs, fence posts, and tomato cages. Some, like the black-and-yellow garden…

It’s pure white from top to bottom. Smooth cap, delicate ring, slender stem. Growing in the shade of an oak after a good rain, it looks almost elegant, like something out of a fairy tale. That innocent look is exactly what makes it so dangerous. This mushroom is one of the most toxic in North…

One of the most painful stings in Texas comes from something that looks like a tiny, fluffy toupee. Run a finger across it, and you’ll quickly regret it. That’s the tricky thing about venomous insects. Many of them don’t look dangerous at all. Some are fuzzy and soft-looking. Others are brightly colored and almost pretty….

Every spring, it steals the show. Long, drooping clusters of purple flowers cascade over fences and pergolas, filling the air with a sweet, heady fragrance. It’s no surprise so many Texans fall in love with it. But that gorgeous vine has a darker side. Brought over from Asia as an ornamental, it grows far faster…

If your windshield looks like it drove through a bug storm, you’re not alone. Across Southeast Texas, lovebugs are back, drifting over highways, clinging to porches, and gathering by the thousands in the warm, humid air. These small black flies with reddish-orange backs are hard to miss. They usually fly in pairs, attached end to…

Yesterday your tomatoes looked absolutely perfect. Today there are strange pale spots on the fruit, a weird sour smell hanging in the air, and a sneaking suspicion that something has been helping itself to your garden without asking. Meet the stink bug, a tiny shield-shaped pest with absolutely no sense of personal boundaries and a…

You decide April’s color in October, months before a single petal appears. Scatter Texas bluebonnet seed across bare soil, and the clock starts. Roots settle into the dark while you focus on other plans. Cold rain softens the seed coats, and you gain a head start. Planting by early November often gives you sturdy March…

For most of the year, you’d hardly notice it. It’s just a tidy clump of fine, green grass sitting quietly in the garden. Then fall arrives, and everything changes. Seemingly overnight, the plant erupts in clouds of airy pink plumes. From a distance, it looks like a soft haze of cotton candy floating above the…

Every December, plenty of Texans wait for their Christmas cactus to burst into bloom. Some get a stunning show of pink, red, or white flowers. Others end up staring at a pot full of green. The difference usually comes down to what happens in the fall. To set flower buds, this plant needs two things:…

In Texas, one good rain can change a yard overnight. After months of heat and dry soil, a soaking fall storm wakes up fungi that have been waiting underground. By morning, mushrooms are popping up in the lawn, around tree roots, and in flower beds. Some are tiny and easy to overlook. Others are big,…

There’s a reason it’s called the brown recluse. This spider hates attention. It hides in dark, quiet corners, hunts at night, and does everything it can to avoid people. That shy nature is exactly what makes it tricky. Brown recluses are common across much of Texas, and they’re experts at moving in unnoticed. They tuck…

In Texas, October often feels like a second spring. The heat finally breaks, plants perk up, and gardeners head outside with fresh energy and a sharp pair of pruners. It’s tempting to tidy everything up while the weather is this nice. For some plants, though, a fall trim is a big mistake. Pruning sends a…

Walk through a Texas yard on a warm fall morning and the lizards are impossible to miss. On fence posts, brick walls, garden borders, the tops of pots, wherever the sun hits directly. They seem to be everywhere, and they’re not moving with the same speed and evasiveness they showed through summer. They’re sitting. Basking….

Fall in the Texas garden smells like cool soil, crunchy leaves, and the faint promise of a hot cocoa break. Your hands itch to tidy everything up before winter settles in. That itch can be a trap, though. Some plants love a good haircut, while others quietly beg you to put the shears down. One…

A pansy-only bed can look thin by January. Winters vary widely across Texas, so you need partners that handle cold snaps. Snapdragons shrug off a sudden cold snap and give you height. Dianthus gives you ruffled color and grassy foliage through the coldest weeks. Ornamental kale turns purple and cream when temperatures drop, so you…

It’s smaller than a penny, but it has already wiped out hundreds of millions of trees across North America. This invasive beetle first showed up in Michigan in the early 2000s, likely hitching a ride from Asia in wooden shipping material. From there, it spread state after state, leaving bare, broken canopies in its path….

Fall armyworms earned their name the hard way. They move across lawns in huge numbers, chewing through grass like a hungry army on the march. Some Texas homeowners have watched a green yard turn brown in a few days. It’s enough to make anyone reach for a spray bottle. But before you do, take a…

When the first real cold front rolls into Texas, it’s tempting to rush around and cover every plant in sight. But tropical plants don’t all feel the chill the same way. Some barely flinch when temperatures dip into the 40s. Others start showing damage long before frost is even in the forecast. Leaves may darken,…

Winter in Texas doesn’t have to mean empty pots and a bare porch. For many plants, the cool season is when they’re at their best. Cool nights and mild afternoons create perfect conditions for crops and flowers that wilt in our summer heat. Containers make it all easier. They fit on patios, steps, and balconies,…

In Texas, a hard freeze can show up on the forecast with barely a day’s warning. Gardeners with plants in the ground scramble for sheets, buckets, and old blankets. Gardeners with containers simply roll them into the garage. That’s just one reason pots are such a smart choice for fall crops. Containers let you skip…

Why would a chilly night make your kale taste sweeter? Texas mornings swing from summer warmth to frosted rooftops within days. You can relax when a light frost arrives. Kale, collards, spinach, and carrots turn sweeter after cold touches them. Chilly air signals those leaves to convert starch into sugar. Pansies, snapdragons, and rosemary handle…

Your fig tree just gave you its best. Buckets of sweet fruit, sticky fingers, and maybe a few jars of homemade preserves lined up on the counter. Now it’s your turn to give something back. After a long Texas summer of heat and heavy production, fig trees are worn out. They still have work to…

Every October, as northern states start bracing for ice and snow, millions of birds pack up and fly south. For many of them, Texas is the final stop. Mild temperatures, open fields, and plenty of seeds, berries, and insects make the state a perfect winter home. That means your backyard could soon look and sound…

October should be a comeback month for St. Augustine grass. The brutal summer heat is gone, nights are cooler, and lawns across Texas usually start looking greener and thicker. So when yellow patches suddenly show up, it can feel like a slap in the face. Those discolored spots are more than an eyesore. They’re often…

It usually happens in a split second. You reach under a pot, lift a stepping stone, or pull on a pair of garden gloves, and suddenly there’s a sharp, burning pain. In Texas, there’s a real chance a scorpion is to blame. The most common one across the state is the striped bark scorpion. It…

Texas gardeners have a saying: “Fall is for planting.” Once you’ve tried it, it’s easy to see why. Spring planting may feel natural, but it comes with a tight deadline. Young plants barely have time to settle in before summer heat arrives and starts testing their limits. Fall gives them a much bigger head start….

Winter mornings in a Texas yard can feel almost too quiet. The garden has slowed down, the flowers are done, and there is not much happening out there. And then one shrub starts glowing with clusters of tiny red berries, and suddenly the whole yard has a completely different energy. Robins show up first, acting…

Your patio slab may be hosting a hidden pressure problem. You planted that towering shade tree to escape July heat. Its roots now travel toward moisture, and your concrete sits in their path. Across Texas, you will spot patios lifted and shifted by oversized root systems. Summer sun already warms that concrete enough to soften…

With sharp hearing and talons that grip with incredible force, this powerful hunter catches almost anything it can find. Rabbits, rats, mice, and even other birds are fair game. It’s one of the most widespread owls in Texas, and it’s as comfortable in suburban neighborhoods as in open ranch country. If you’ve heard deep, soft…

Shady corners can be the toughest spots in a Texas garden. Most flowering plants want full sun. That leaves dim areas under trees or along the north side of the house looking plain, patchy, or forgotten. But there’s one plant that actually saves its best show for the shade, and for fall. Just as many…

Your roses just made it through a Texas summer. That’s no small accomplishment. For months, they’ve battled triple-digit heat, scorching sun, and stretches of little or no rain. Some bushes came out looking pretty good. Others are tired, leggy, and a little worse for wear. Either way, they’ve been running on fumes. October is their…

Strong winds can be brutal in Texas. They dry out soil, batter tender plants, and send patio furniture sliding across the deck. Many homeowners plant fast-growing hedges to help, only to end up trimming them every few weeks just to keep them in shape. This native shrub takes a different approach. It grows thick and…

Few birds stare back quite like this one. Its bright orange eyes look almost fierce, and its long, curved bill seems built for serious business. If a curve-billed thrasher has been poking around your Texas yard, you’ve got a pretty unique visitor. These birds are right at home in the dry brushlands of South and…

It never needs mowing. It stays green through drought. It looks perfect all year long. No wonder artificial turf has become so popular across Texas. But that flawless lawn comes with a hidden cost, and local wildlife is paying it. Real grass is full of life, even if you don’t notice it. Earthworms, beetles, caterpillars,…

October is when Texas vegetable gardens finally come back to life. The heat breaks, fall crops go in, and rows of broccoli, kale, and cabbage start filling out. Unfortunately, one hungry pest has been waiting for this moment, too. It shows up quietly. A few ragged holes appear in the leaves. Then a few more….

At first glance, it looks like grass. That’s exactly what makes it so sneaky. This invasive weed has been creeping into Texas lawns, and many homeowners don’t notice it until it’s taken over big sections of the yard. Its thick, glossy leaves blend right in with St. Augustine and other warm-season turf. By the time…

October might feel like the end of the growing season, but it’s actually a fresh start. The scorching heat is finally backing off, the soil is still warm, and the bugs aren’t quite as hungry. That’s a sweet spot for a whole lineup of cool-season crops. Crunchy carrots, leafy greens, and sweet, tender peas are…

Retaining walls aren’t cheap. Depending on the size, you could spend thousands of dollars on stone, concrete, and labor. And even then, heavy rain can find a way around them. Now imagine solving the same problem with a few well-chosen plants. Texas weather doesn’t play nice. One month, the ground is cracked and dry. The…

Many people think spring is the time to plant trees. In Texas, that’s one of the biggest gardening myths around. Ask any seasoned Texas gardener, and they’ll tell you fall is where the magic happens. October brings cooler days, warm soil, and a break from that brutal summer heat. It’s the perfect combo for young…

Most gardening advice about clay soil sounds the same. Dig it up. Add compost. Mix in sand. Repeat every year. But what if your soil isn’t the problem? What if you just haven’t found the right plants yet? Heavy clay covers huge stretches of Texas, especially across the Blackland Prairie. It’s dense, slow to drain,…

Your water bill might finally get a break. During summer, Texas fruit trees drink like they’re running a marathon. Long, hot days pull moisture out of the soil fast. Many homeowners end up watering every few days just to keep their trees from struggling. Fall changes the game. As temperatures drop and the days get…

By the end of a Texas summer, a lot of yards look pretty rough. Leaves are crispy, flower beds are thin, and plants that looked amazing in April are barely hanging on. It’s easy to assume the worst. But native plants have a few tricks that exotic ones don’t. Many of them have spent thousands…

Most monarch butterflies in the eastern United States pass through Texas at some point. The state is often called the “Texas Funnel,” because both spring and fall migrations squeeze through it on their way to and from Mexico. That puts Texas gardeners in a pretty powerful position. Each spring, monarchs returning north stop here to…

The moment that thermometer finally dips below 100 degrees in Texas is genuinely one of the most satisfying feelings a homeowner can experience. You step outside with your coffee, the air actually smells like something other than hot pavement, and for a brief moment everything feels right with the world. Then you look down at…

Should you really mow this Saturday? Texas hands you a tricky temperature swing that confuses your lawn. Mornings turn crisp while afternoons still warm your driveway. Growth slows each week, yet blades keep stretching. Trimming too low now shortchanges roots before winter arrives. Waiting too long lets tall grass hold moisture against the soil. Your…

People like to joke that Texas only has two seasons: summer and almost summer. Anyone who’s seen the hills light up in November knows better. Fall color in Texas doesn’t show up all at once, and it doesn’t always follow the rules. It tends to arrive late, often peaking from late October into November. It…

Some places are worth a few extra hours on the road. In the fall, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is one of them. As the Texas heat finally fades, this garden settles into its best season. The air turns crisp, and the Japanese Garden comes alive as its maples cover the walkways in bright orange…

Every fall, Texas becomes one of the busiest hummingbird highways in the country. Thousands of tiny travelers pass through on their way south, and many stop to refuel before crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Some will fly more than 500 miles without a single break. Your feeder could be one of their most important pit…

One of the loudest voices in your backyard belongs to a bird small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. That bold “teakettle, teakettle, teakettle” song is the calling card of the Carolina wren. Lately, plenty of Texans have been hearing it more often. These busy little birds are hopping along fences, poking…

Garlic is one of the most forgiving crops you can grow. It doesn’t need much space, it rarely gets bothered by pests, and it pretty much takes care of itself once it’s in the ground. There’s just one thing it’s picky about. Timing. In Texas, that timing can be a little tricky. Plant too early,…

You planted that gorgeous shade tree to outlast the house, yet its leaves are browning. Texas summers stress your canopy, and the leaves curl from heat. Sprays and trunk injections tempt you, but those costs add up fast. Arborist visits fill your busy calendar like unpaid invoices. Meanwhile, you can plant a native tree that…
