Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
Ask any longtime Texas rose grower about their favorite season, and the answer might surprise you. Spring gets all the attention, but fall is when roses really shine. As the summer heat finally eases, rose bushes across the state push out a fresh wave of blooms. The colors look richer, the petals last longer, and…
Spotting a painted bunting in your yard feels like winning a small prize. Unfortunately, they don’t make it easy. Painted buntings are shy, quick, and happiest when they’re tucked out of sight. Time is running short, too. As fall sets in, they’re fueling up for their long trip south to Mexico and Central America. Once…
Many fruit trees in Texas come with a catch. Peaches need just the right number of cold hours. Apples struggle in the heat. Citrus can freeze during a surprise winter blast. Many trees also need a second tree nearby for pollination, plus regular spraying to keep pests and diseases away. Then there’s one tree that…
What kind of animal can take a rattlesnake bite and keep going like nothing happened? The answer might be poking around your backyard tonight. Opossums carry a natural resistance to pit viper venom, which makes them one of the toughest little critters roaming Texas after dark. Most of the time, an opossum is just passing…
Aphids don’t need to mate to multiply. A single female can give birth to dozens of live young, and those babies can start having their own within about a week. That’s how a few tiny bugs turn into a full-blown infestation almost overnight. Fall gardens in Texas are especially tempting targets. Tender new growth on…
Something shifts in October that every Texas gardener feels before they can fully explain it. The air smells different, cooler and a little earthy, like the ground itself finally exhaled after months of brutal heat. Your summer gloves are absolutely exhausted and they have earned every bit of that rest. But here is the exciting…
Why did your spring herb race to flower before you snipped a decent handful? Credit the calendar, not your green thumb. This leafy herb prefers cool air, so warm, lengthening days push it toward seed. October flips that script in Texas. Cooler nights and shorter afternoons let the plant pour energy into lush, fragrant leaves….
In Texas, it’s not a question of if a snake will pass through your yard. It’s a question of when. The Lone Star State is home to more than 100 kinds of snakes, more than almost anywhere else in the country. Most are harmless and do a great job keeping rodents under control. But a…
You did everything right. You picked a sunny spot, added rich compost, and watered on schedule. Yet your tomato plants still look weak, the fruit is small, and pests seem to find them first. The problem might not be your tomatoes at all. It could be their neighbors. Companion planting gets a lot of attention,…
That sharp, unmistakable odor drifting through the yard at night is often the first clue that a skunk has moved into the neighborhood. Then the other signs start adding up. Skunks are common across Texas, and they’re not out to cause trouble. They’re simply looking for food, water, and a quiet place to sleep during…
Few things beat a juicy grapefruit or a handful of Meyer lemons picked right from your own backyard. That’s why it’s so worrying when those glossy green leaves suddenly start to curl. In Texas, early fall is a tricky time for citrus. The calendar says autumn, but the heat often hangs on well into September….
Some plants are annoying. This one is downright stubborn. Texas gardeners know the routine all too well. You spot a thorny vine creeping up the fence or twisting through a shrub. You grab your pruners, cut it back to the ground, and call it a win. A few weeks later, fresh green shoots are climbing…
Fall in Texas hits different. The air finally has some bite to it, the grill is going, and there is something deeply satisfying about kicking through a pile of leaves like you are eight years old again. Honestly, autumn in this state is a whole mood. But here is the part nobody puts on the…
A masked burglar just picked your trash can like a cheap lock. Raccoons across Texas have learned that suburbs pay better than forests. Those front paws hold so many nerve endings that they read food like braille. You secure a latch, and they study it until it surrenders. Some researchers found urban raccoons out-solved rural…
Every October, Texas homeowners notice the same thing. Crickets start showing up everywhere. Some nights, it seems like more are coming in than you can keep up with. This isn’t bad luck, and it doesn’t mean your home is dirty. It’s a seasonal pattern that happens across the state each fall. As temperatures drop, crickets…
You sprayed. You waited. You celebrated. Then, a few days later, they were back like nothing ever happened. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Texas homeowners have been locked in this battle for decades, and plenty of them are losing. This pest doesn’t just survive a quick blast of spray. It shrugs it off,…
Kudzu has long been known as “the vine that ate the South.” But in Texas, there’s a new green menace, and it might be even worse. It starts small. A few glossy leaves poke through a chain-link fence. A week later, they’ve crept along the top rail. Before long, the whole fence line is buried,…
A hummingbird zips up to your feeder, wings buzzing like a tiny motor. It dips its beak for a sip. Then, in a split second, it’s gone. Snatched right out of the air. No, it wasn’t a hawk. It wasn’t the neighbor’s cat either. The real culprit is much smaller, much quieter, and a lot…
Can a plant really break the law? In Texas, the answer is yes. Some shrubs are actually banned from sale in the Lone Star State. It sounds strange at first. Why would anyone outlaw a bush? The reason is simple. Certain plants spread so aggressively that they crowd out native species, choke waterways, and wreck…
You shuffle outside with your morning coffee, still half asleep, and something in the grass stops you completely. A large bronze shape is bobbing past the fence with the kind of confident energy that suggests it has absolutely no idea it is trespassing. Then it fans its tail, the sunlight catches those copper feathers, and…
Fallen pecans beneath your trees are feeding guests you did not invite. Opossums and raccoons pick up that rich scent quickly after dark. Cooler Texas nights bring heavy nut drops across lawns, patios, and driveways. That timing matters because wild animals start fattening up for winter. Raccoons use nimble front paws to lift lids, tip…
Across Texas, coyotes aren’t just roaming ranches and open fields anymore. They’re showing up in suburbs, cul-de-sacs, and even big-city backyards. And here’s the part most people don’t realize: your yard might be sending them an open invitation. Coyotes are smart, and they’re always looking for an easy meal, a safe place to rest, or…
Have you ever noticed a white flowering plant blooming in a Texas landscape in fall when almost everything else around it has stopped? It doesn’t look like it belongs to the same season. While surrounding vegetation fades and dries out, this native wildflower opens its blooms with a freshness that seems almost defiant given the…
Most Texas vines earn their place through visual impact alone. They cover structures and fill in fence lines with a density that takes years to achieve with slower growing alternatives. But there is one fall-blooming Texas vine that adds something to a fence or pergola that most vines simply cannot. It fills the air around…
There is a porch plant that seasoned Texas gardeners treat very differently from the way most homeowners do. While most people leave it outside until the cold finishes it off and then replace it next spring, the gardeners who know this plant’s potential bring it inside before the first cold snap and discover something most…
Is your Texas Christmas cactus sitting there looking flat, pale, and completely uninterested in blooming while everyone else’s seems to burst into color right on schedule? You’re not alone. Christmas cacti are one of the most popular houseplants in Texas homes, and they’re also one of the most commonly misunderstood when it comes to what…
Grackles are not subtle visitors. When a flock decides your Texas yard is worth their attention in fall, you know about it immediately. The noise, the sheer numbers, the bold indifference to anything else sharing the space. Most Texas homeowners who experience a large grackle gathering have one reaction before any other. Why here? Grackle…
Spicebush is one of those native plants that earns genuine enthusiasm from every gardener who discovers it, and quiet puzzlement from everyone who hasn’t encountered it yet. It’s not a flashy plant in the way that most garden center staples are flashy. But what it delivers across the full growing year, for wildlife, for the…
Planting beneath a mature tree in Texas is one of the most reliably frustrating gardening challenges a homeowner faces. The root competition is intense, the shade can be deep, and the combination of dry compacted soil and low light eliminates most standard garden plants before they get a real chance. Most homeowners either accept bare…
Few wildlife spectacles in Texas compare to sandhill cranes arriving for fall. The sound reaches you before you see them, that prehistoric rolling call carrying across open sky in a way that makes everything stop. Then the formations appear, thousands of birds dropping toward wetlands and fields in movements that have been happening over this…
Fall migration brings warblers through Texas in numbers that can genuinely surprise homeowners who have never paid attention to what moves through their yard during this window. These small, often brilliantly colored birds move fast and stay briefly, but during peak migration they appear in yards across the state with a frequency that rewards anyone…
Most Texas homeowners put mulch around the foundation without giving it much thought. It suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and looks tidy. The choice of which mulch to use feels like a minor aesthetic decision rather than anything with real consequences. But certain mulch choices are making roach problems significantly worse, and the foundation zone is…
Boxwood does one thing in a Texas yard. It sits there and looks tidy. Birds don’t eat from it, nest in it, or find much use for it beyond the occasional perch. Native Texas shrubs that fill the same structural role tell a completely different story. They provide dense cover that birds actively use for…
Boxwood has held its place as the default foundation shrub in Texas landscapes for decades. However, it’s increasingly susceptible to pest and disease pressure in Texas conditions, and produces absolutely nothing that any person or animal can eat or use. A quiet shift is happening in Texas yards. Homeowners who want structure and year round…
Dill is one of those herbs that most Texas gardeners either grow enthusiastically in spring and then abandon when summer heat arrives. Or they skip it entirely because they’ve never thought of it as a fall crop. Both are missed opportunities. Fall is actually one of the best times to grow dill in Texas, and…
Winter in Texas is not as forgiving as most people assume when they’re choosing privacy plantings. Shrubs that looked full and dense through the growing season can thin out dramatically once temperatures drop. For homeowners who planted deciduous species without fully thinking through the winter picture, January tends to be a very clarifying month. Native…
You watched your rosemary laugh off summer, but autumn brings a trickier test. Blue northers can drop temperatures fast across Texas, surprising tender new shoots overnight. Rain also returns, and cooler soil stays soggy far longer than you expect. Roots sitting in that wet ground invite fungal issues you can’t spot early. Meanwhile, the fertilizer…
Water restrictions in Texas are changing how homeowners think about trees. A shade tree that demands regular irrigation through summer used to feel like a reasonable trade. Now, with restrictions tightening and dry seasons becoming more intense, that trade feels less acceptable. The trees going into Texas yards this fall are increasingly native ones that…
Squirrels in fall are a different kind of problem than squirrels in spring. As natural food sources peak, they become bolder, and more willing to raid garden beds, and newly planted bulbs with a frequency that most Texas homeowners find genuinely exhausting. Most deterrent approaches require ongoing effort to stay effective. Cages, netting, sprays that…
Hydrangeas have had a long run as one of the most popular flowering shrubs in Texas yards. The blooms are undeniably beautiful, the varieties are endless, and the enthusiasm around them shows no sign of fading. But hydrangeas in Texas come with real demands. They need more water than most homeowners account for, struggle through…
Texas fig trees are generous plants. Given the right conditions, they produce abundantly and ask very little in return. But there is one fall task that most Texas fig growers either skip entirely or don’t do correctly. It takes very little time and it costs almost nothing. When done before winter arrives, it sets a…
When the first cool front blows across Texas, people are not the only ones looking for a warm place to stay. Rats start searching too. As nights get chilly, they hunt for spots with food, water, and shelter. Your backyard might have all three without you even knowing it. The tricky part is that they…
Those reddish specks racing across your porch are not fire ants. Meet a bold South American newcomer rewriting the rules of pest control. A Houston exterminator spotted them early, and scientists soon took notice. Fire ants, those legendary Texas tough guys, lose ground when these arrivals appear. Their trick is ingenious: they coat themselves in…
Zoysia grass in Texas is built for punishment, and it takes a significant amount of it through summer. The heat, the drought, the relentless intensity of July and August push even the toughest zoysia lawns to their limits. By September most of them are showing exactly what the season asked of them. Thin patches, slow…
Wasps showing up around a Texas home are one of those pest problems that most homeowners manage reactively rather than preventing in the first place. A nest gets sprayed and another one appears nearby. The cycle repeats through the warmer months without anyone stopping to ask why certain properties keep attracting wasps while others rarely…
There is a flowering plant showing up in Texas landscapes this September that tends to attract attention before it raises concern. The blooms are bright and the color is striking. At first glance it reads as something worth leaving alone or even encouraging. Most people who encounter it have no idea what they’re looking at…
Waking up to find your Texas yard rooted up overnight is one of those discoveries that makes the damage feel almost personal. The torn soil, the destroyed lawn, the garden beds turned over as if something was searching for something specific. Because something was. Feral hogs don’t root randomly. Every disturbance in your yard reflects…
Most Texas yards look their best in spring and then spend the rest of the year coasting. By fall, the summer heat has taken its toll, curb appeal has faded, and the front of the house can look like it’s simply waiting for next year. But fall in Texas is genuinely beautiful weather for outdoor…
Overnight, a caterpillar army can strip your lawn before you notice. Those tan patches are fall armyworms, and they move as a hungry mob. Texas lawns take heavy seasonal hits, especially bermudagrass and St. Augustine. Moths ride storm fronts north, then lay egg clusters on fences and eaves. Within days, larvae hatch and start feeding…
Sloped yards in Texas are one of those landscape challenges that most homeowners manage rather than solve. Every heavy rain moves a little more soil downhill, bare patches appear where grass can’t hold, and the erosion that felt minor in year one becomes noticeably worse by year three. Most conventional solutions require significant investment or…
An armadillo in your Texas yard once is a story. An armadillo returning night after night is a problem. The holes keep appearing, the same areas keep getting dug up, and the standard advice to shoo them away or spray something around the perimeter produces results that last approximately one evening before the whole situation…
Fall is the moment Texas gardeners who want a spectacular spring have been waiting for. The bulbs going into the ground right now are the blooms that will carry the yard through March and April. The difference between a spring garden that stops people mid-stride and one that barely registers almost always traces back to…
Skunks are not the kind of yard visitor most Texas homeowners welcome, but fall tends to bring them out with a regularity that catches people off guard. If you’ve been noticing skunk activity in your yard more frequently as the season shifts, there are specific reasons behind it. They have everything to do with what…
Have you ever spotted a plant near your Texas yard producing berries so vivid and so unusual that you assumed it couldn’t possibly be native? That reaction is completely understandable. The color this plant displays in fall is genuinely striking. It looks more like something escaped from a cultivated garden than something that belongs to…
Your hedge is quietly losing ground it once confidently owned. Heat pushes it hard while your clay soil turns unforgiving. You water it more, worry about drought, and still watch it slowly thin. Something sturdier is already replacing your tired hedge across Texas. Sharper front beds start showing up and down your street by October….
Fall planting season in Texas has a rhythm that serious gardeners build their calendar around, and the nurseries that stock for it well are worth driving to. Bulbs that establish over winter for spring blooms, mums that deliver weeks of fall color and come back reliably the following year, and the seasonal selections that make…
There was a time when certain Texas roadsides looked completely different from what most drivers see today. Before development, before aggressive land management, before the landscape was shaped primarily for tidiness, one particular wildflower covered open land across the state in numbers that made entire stretches of Texas highway genuinely breathtaking in spring. Most Texans…
