TEXAS

Texas has no shortage of things that can hurt you, and most of them get plenty of attention. Copperheads show up in every cautionary conversation about outdoor safety, and rightfully so. But there is a native Texas shrub quietly growing in yards, along roadsides, and across the Hill Country that carries a level of toxicity…

What is the point of growing one of the most visually striking plants available in Texas if it refuses to actually bloom? Bougainvillea is supposed to be a showstopper, producing waves of bold color that hold up through conditions most plants cannot handle. When it stops blooming, the plant still takes up the same space…

Fence lines in Texas yards are some of the most underused growing spaces a homeowner has. They get sun, they have structure for climbing plants, and they run along the perimeter of the property where something productive can grow without taking over the main yard. Most of the time though, they get filled with the…

Triple digit heat in Texas is not an exception. It is a season, and it arrives every year with the kind of consistency that separates plants that truly belong here from ones that are just tolerating the climate. Most plants slow down significantly when temperatures hit that range, redirecting energy toward survival and away from…

East Texas humidity creates ideal mosquito conditions from late spring through early fall, and anyone who spends time outdoors in this region knows how quickly an evening on the porch can become an exercise in swatting and retreating inside. Sprays and candles offer temporary relief, but they wear off, need to be restocked, and cover…

Knockout roses have built a strong reputation in Texas gardens because they genuinely deliver where a lot of other roses fall apart. They bloom heavily, resist disease better than most varieties, and handle the heat with more grace than their more demanding relatives. That toughness has a limit though, and how your knockout roses perform…

Most Texas gardeners are deep into managing the summer heat in June, not thinking about fall. That shift in focus is understandable, but it comes with a cost. The fall garden in Texas does not build itself in September. It gets set up in June, through decisions about what to plant, what to pull, and…

Lantana in Texas starts the season looking full and colorful, and for a few months it lives up to every expectation. Then August arrives and what was a thriving plant starts turning into something woody, stretched out, and patchy in ways that are hard to reverse once they get going. Getting leggy by late summer…

Lightning bugs are one of those summer experiences that feel almost nostalgic the moment you stop seeing as many of them as you used to. Across Texas, their numbers have been quietly declining, and while light pollution and habitat loss get most of the blame, what happens in individual yards plays a bigger role than…

Boxwood has long been a go-to choice for driveway borders in Texas, and it is easy to understand the appeal. It is tidy, it stays green, and it gives a landscape a structured, finished look without much creative effort. The problem is that boxwood is not well suited to the Texas climate, and maintaining that…

Most plants in a Texas garden ask something of you, water during dry spells, pruning at the right time, fertilizing before the growing season kicks in. The native groundcover in this article flips that dynamic entirely. The less you do with it, the better it gets. Year after year it spreads quietly, fills in on…

Slopes and hills have a special talent for making Texas gardeners feel completely defeated. The sun hammers down on exposed banks like it has a personal grudge, heavy rains show up and take half your soil with them on the way out, and then a dry spell moves in and leaves everything cracked and sad-looking….

You’ve been watching those hibiscus buds for days. They’re swelling, they’re looking promising, and you’re already mentally planning how great the garden is going to look. And then, just like that, they drop. Every single one of them. Right before opening. If that experience feels personally offensive, that’s because it kind of is. Hibiscus bud…

Lantana going leggy and losing its blooms by midsummer is one of the most common complaints in Texas gardening, and it is especially frustrating because this plant is supposed to be one of the toughest performers through the hottest months. When it starts looking stretched out and flowering less by July or August, most gardeners…

Hostas have made their way into Texas shade gardens largely by reputation, borrowed from the cooler climates where they genuinely thrive. In Texas, that reputation does not always hold up. Slugs, summer heat, and humidity create a set of conditions that push hostas beyond what they handle well, and the result is often a plant…

Foundation plantings across Texas tend to follow a short and predictable list. The same non-native shrubs show up in yard after yard, chosen more out of habit than intention, and maintained through a cycle of watering, trimming, and replacing that never really ends. A growing number of Texas homeowners are stepping off that cycle by…

Every Texas yard seems to have at least one spot under a tree where grass has quietly given up. The combination of shade, competing roots, and dry soil creates conditions that turf just cannot handle long term, and re-seeding the same area year after year is one of the more frustrating cycles in Texas lawn…

Texas gardens have a bug situation, and we mean that in the most fascinating way possible. The warm climate, long growing seasons, and layers of flowering plants create conditions that basically roll out a welcome mat for some of the most unusual, surprising, and occasionally nightmare-inducing insects you will ever come across. Seriously, some of…

Gardenias have a reputation for being a little high maintenance, and honestly, they’ve done nothing to discourage that rumor. You plant one, you wait, you stare at a gorgeous wall of glossy green leaves all summer, and the blooms just… don’t show up. Or they appear briefly and then disappear before you’ve even had a…

Texas salvia is one of the most reliable summer bloomers available to gardeners in this state, but reliable does not always mean effortless. A lot of Texas gardeners end up with salvia that looks impressive through May and June and then gradually loses momentum right when the heat peaks and the color is needed most….

Something is shifting in Texas yards, and it is happening quickly enough that nurseries and landscape designers across the state are starting to take notice. Plants that have dominated Texas landscaping for decades are being pulled out and replaced with natives, not because they stopped looking good, but because gardeners are realizing how much they…

Rats are a persistent problem in South Texas, drawn in by the warm climate, dense vegetation, and easy access to food and shelter that the region provides year round. Most homeowners reach for traps or bait stations, and while those methods work in the short term, they require constant maintenance and do nothing to make…

Rosemary has earned its place in Texas landscapes over the years. It handles drought, thrives in the heat, stays evergreen, and pulls double duty as both an ornamental and a culinary herb. For a long time it felt like one of the safer bets in Texas landscaping, reliable enough to plant without much second guessing….

South Texas has a climate that makes fruit tree selection a completely different conversation than it is almost anywhere else in the country. The summers are long, the heat is punishing, and the combination of high temperatures and humidity creates conditions that end the ambitions of many commonly recommended fruit trees before they ever get…

Crape myrtles are basically the default answer to every Texas landscaping question, and look, they’ve earned a lot of that reputation. But here’s a conversation worth having: are they actually the best choice for every single spot in your yard? Because fence lines and driveway edges are a whole different situation. We’re talking reflected heat…

Bearded iris in Texas is a bit of a thrilling experience. One week you’ve got these gorgeous, ruffled blooms putting on a show that makes the whole garden look incredible, and then almost before you’ve had a chance to fully appreciate them, the heat shows up and the window slams shut. Spring moves fast here,…

Container gardening in a Texas summer is a test of both the gardener and the plants. Heat radiates off pavement and walls, pots dry out faster than you expect, and a few days of missed watering during a busy week can set a container planting back significantly. Most flowers are not equipped to handle that…

Did you know that the difference between a perennial that thrives for years and one that slowly declines often comes down to a single task most Texas gardeners either skip or put off too long? Dividing perennials at the right time is one of the most effective ways to keep them healthy, productive, and expanding…

Esperanza is one of those plants that seems almost custom built for Texas summers, pushing out waves of bright yellow blooms right through the kind of heat that shuts down most of the garden. But even a plant this well adapted to Texas conditions performs better with a little preparation before the most brutal stretch…

Water bills in Texas have a way of climbing fast during the summer months, and a traditional lawn is often the biggest reason why. Keeping grass green through a Texas summer takes a serious amount of irrigation, and in many parts of the state that comes with a real cost at the tap and sometimes…

Crape myrtles are beautiful trees, and across Texas they are everywhere for good reason. They bloom heavily, handle heat without complaint, and come back reliably year after year. The problem shows up when they are planted in spaces that were never big enough to hold them. Aggressive pruning becomes an annual requirement, the natural form…

Let’s just say it out loud: Texas summers are brutal. The kind of heat that makes you question why you ever thought outdoor hobbies were a good idea. Weeks without rain, blazing sun that shows up early and stays late, and temperatures that just keep climbing. Your garden feels every bit of it. Here’s the…

Most plants take one look at a Texas July and quietly give up. The scorching afternoons, the dry spells, the kind of relentless sun that makes you question your own life choices out in the garden. And then there’s New Gold lantana, just absolutely thriving through all of it like the heat is no big…

Texas summers are not the end of the vegetable garden. For the right crops, they are actually the beginning of something really productive. Most gardening advice is written for climates where summer is mild and pleasant, which leads a lot of Texas gardeners to assume the hot months are just a waiting period between spring…

What if the shadiest, most difficult corner of your front yard could actually become the most interesting part of the whole property? Bare shady areas in Texas front yards have a way of looking neglected even when everything else is well maintained, mostly because the wrong plants keep getting tried in those spots and quietly…

Rats are a problem in Texas yards and gardens that most homeowners would rather not think about until they absolutely have to, and by then the issue is usually already bigger than expected. Traps and poison bait work, but they come with their own set of risks, especially in yards with pets, children, or wildlife…

Full sun in a Texas summer is not the same as full sun anywhere else. It is relentless, intense, and paired with heat that pushes most plants to their limits by early afternoon. The common advice is to look for sun tolerant plants, but sun tolerant and heat tolerant are not always the same thing,…

Plumeria in Texas can put on a bloom show that runs from summer all the way into October, but that kind of long season performance does not happen without the right setup in May. This is the month when plumeria comes fully back to life after its winter dormancy, and the decisions you make right…

If there’s one plant that should absolutely be thriving in a Texas summer, it’s lantana. This thing was practically built for heat, drought, and relentless sun. And yet, somehow, gardeners across the state still manage to slow it down or stop those blooms entirely. No judgment, it happens to the best of us. The culprit…

Plumeria and Texas summers have a complicated relationship. On one hand, this plant absolutely loves heat and strong sun. On the other hand, too much of the wrong kind of attention during the hottest months can send it in the completely wrong direction. As late spring starts nudging temperatures upward, plumeria kicks into active growth…

The moment your Texas tomato plants start showing flowers is one of the most critical points in the entire growing season, and it goes by faster than most gardeners expect. That first flush of flowers represents the difference between a productive plant and one that sets little fruit, drops blooms early, or struggles through the…

Lantana is one of the toughest plants in Texas, but even the toughest plants perform better with a little preparation before the season gets serious. The stretch of time right before brutal heat sets in is actually one of the most valuable windows you have to set your lantana up for a strong summer. Once…

Bermuda grass has been the standard Texas lawn choice for a long time, and it does have real strengths. It handles heat, recovers from foot traffic, and stays green through conditions that would finish off a lot of other turf. The downside is the water it demands, especially through the peak of a Texas summer…

Fig trees are one of the best investments a Texas gardener can make. They are productive, relatively low maintenance, and genuinely well suited to the Texas climate once they are established. But there is a window right before the heat gets intense that a lot of fig growers let pass without taking advantage of it,…

Gardenias are one of the most rewarding plants you can grow in Texas, with blooms that look stunning and a fragrance that makes the whole yard smell incredible. Getting them to actually perform before summer heat takes over is where a lot of Texas gardeners run into trouble, often without realizing the mistakes are already…

Not every insect in your Texas garden is a problem, and learning to tell the difference is one of the most useful things a gardener can do. Beneficial insects do work that no spray or tool can replicate. They pollinate your vegetables and flowers, hunt down the pests that cause real damage, and keep your…

Bark mulch is one of those landscaping habits that feels practical until you start looking into how it behaves in a wildfire situation. In Texas, where dry conditions and high winds can turn a small spark into a fast moving problem, what sits directly around your home matters more than most people realize. Bark mulch…

Deer pressure in Texas is no joke. One night is all it takes for a small group of them to work through plants you have been growing for months, leaving behind nothing but stems and frustration. Fencing is effective but expensive and not always practical, and commercial repellent sprays require constant reapplication and wear off…

Most herbs have a peak window in spring when conditions are mild and growth is steady, and then they start struggling as Texas summer heat takes over. Not all of them follow that pattern though. There is a group of herbs that actually responds to rising temperatures by producing more, growing faster, and developing stronger…

What if the plant showing up in nearly every Texas landscape project is actually one of the least interesting choices you could make? Dwarf yaupon holly is everywhere, and at this point it has become less of a design decision and more of a default. It is not a bad plant, but it has been…

A bare fence or an empty pergola is a missed opportunity in a Texas summer garden. The right vine transforms those structures into something genuinely impressive, adding layers of color, texture, and life to spaces that would otherwise just be wood and metal baking in the heat. The challenge is that Texas summers are brutal…

Central Texas front yards have a tree problem that does not get talked about enough. Most of the trees people plant there are either too big for the space, too thirsty for the climate, or both. Watching a tree slowly outgrow a front yard or struggle through a dry summer on a heavy watering schedule…

May in Texas is basically the gardening equivalent of a pop quiz you didn’t see coming. Everything looks great, your tomato plants are green and growing, and then suddenly the temperatures jump, the wind picks up, and the sun decides it’s done playing nice. Just like that, those thriving plants start showing signs of stress…

Gardenias are the drama queens of the Texas garden, and honestly, we love them for it. That glossy foliage, those creamy white blooms, that fragrance that stops you in your tracks every single time. Absolutely worth it. But here’s the part nobody warns you about: Texas summer can humble a gardenia fast. We’re talking almost…

Texas summers are not kind to most flowering plants, but salvia is built for exactly the kind of relentless heat this state delivers. The catch is that built for heat and blooms through heat are not always the same thing. A lot of Texas gardeners end up with salvia that looks strong in May, fades…

Lantana is one of the hardest working plants in a Texas summer garden, pushing out color through heat that shuts down almost everything else. But there is a real difference between lantana that blooms steadily all season and lantana that flares up early and then limps through the hottest months looking tired and overgrown. What…

Irises in Texas can be absolutely spectacular, but getting them to bloom reliably is something a lot of Texas gardeners struggle with more than they expect to. The plant looks healthy, the foliage comes back every year, and yet the blooms either never show up or get worse with each passing season. The frustrating part…
