Texas gardening is shaped by heat, changing weather, and wide-open spaces. From native plants to resilient lawns and vegetable gardens, success comes from choosing plants that handle sun and drought. With the right approach, gardens stay strong and functional.
Most people in Texas know to watch out for scorpions, rattlesnakes, and fire ants. But there is one small, fuzzy creature that flies under the radar and packs a seriously painful punch. The puss caterpillar looks like a tiny piece of soft, harmless fluff, but do not let its cute appearance fool you. Hidden beneath…
Plumeria owners in Texas put real effort into getting their plants through winter dormancy, repotting at the right time, and positioning them where the summer sun can work its magic. After all that careful setup, it is a specific thing that gets skipped in June that quietly determines whether those plants deliver an impressive bloom…
There you are, enjoying a quiet Texas evening outside, and then you notice it. A large, completely silent shape sitting in the tree across the yard like it has been there all along and you just weren’t paying attention. Maybe you heard that soft, low call drifting through the dark first. Maybe something swept past…
Every fall across Texas, something kind of magical happens along neighborhood streets. Gulf muhly explodes into those soft, feathery pink clouds that make you slow down your car just to get a better look. Seriously, this grass has caused more than a few double takes. Homeowners all over the state have started catching on to…
Planting around a Texas pool sounds like it should be straightforward until you start factoring in everything those plants actually have to deal with. Reflected heat off the water and surrounding hardscape, chlorinated splash that hits the soil and foliage regularly, full sun exposure for most of the day, and the expectation that everything looks…
Most people see something large moving fast through the garden after dark and their first instinct is to figure out how to get rid of it. Texas nights bring out plenty of creatures that deserve that reaction, but there is one moth that shows up in gardens across the state after sunset that you absolutely…
Gnats and flies are a persistent part of outdoor life in Texas, and they tend to peak right when you most want to be spending time in the garden or on the patio. Chemical sprays help temporarily, but they need constant reapplication, and most people would rather not be coating their outdoor space in repellent…
June in Texas feels like the height of the growing season, and the decisions most gardeners make during this month reflect that energy. Plants are in the ground, things are growing, and the focus tends to be entirely on managing what is happening right now rather than thinking ahead. That short-term mindset leads to a…
Roses and Texas have a complicated history. The ambition to grow them is everywhere, and the results range from genuinely impressive to quietly discouraging depending almost entirely on variety selection. Texas heat, humidity, and the intensity of a summer that does not let up for months separate roses that were built for this climate from…
Pine straw has had a good run in Texas gardens, truly. But let’s be honest: watching it blow across the yard after a windy afternoon, or realizing you need to reapply it again already, gets old pretty fast. Texas landscapes are tough on mulch in general. The heat is relentless, the soil ranges from rocky…
Your Texas yard might look completely fine from the back porch, but ticks are genuinely excellent at staying out of sight until they’re not. These tiny, patient little creatures have been perfecting the art of hiding in plain sight for a very long time, and they are remarkably good at it. Tall grass, brushy corners,…
Bird of paradise is one of the most dramatic plants you can grow in a Texas garden, and when it blooms, the results justify every bit of the space it takes up. Getting it to actually bloom though is where a lot of Texas gardeners hit a wall. The plant looks healthy, the foliage is…
White flowers in a Texas garden have a way of standing out that no other color quite matches. They stay visible in the low light of early morning and dusk, they create a clean contrast against summer foliage, and they hold up visually even on the harshest days when intense light washes out every other…
Indian hawthorn has been a fixture in Texas foundation plantings and landscape borders for decades, chosen for its compact habit, evergreen foliage, and spring blooms that reliably show up without much encouragement. What has become harder to ignore over time is the entangle fire blight problem that follows this shrub across much of Texas, turning…
Photinia has been a default fence-line shrub in Texas for a long time, and its fast growth and dense habit made it feel like a practical choice for homeowners who wanted quick privacy screening. The problem is that photinia comes with a persistent fungal disease problem that Texas humidity makes nearly impossible to manage. Once…
Squash vine borers are one of the most frustrating pests a Texas vegetable gardener can face, partly because of the damage they cause and partly because of how quickly that damage becomes irreversible. A squash plant that looks perfectly healthy on Monday can be wilting by the weekend, and by the time the obvious signs…
Somewhere in a Texas backyard right now, someone is standing next to one of the most chemically potent plants in the state and thinking absolutely nothing of it. The tree looks completely ordinary. Tidy, even. The kind of thing a landscaper would recommend without hesitation, and thousands of them have. It shows up in front…
Hydrangeas have a loyal following in Texas gardens, and the ones that survive here can be genuinely beautiful. The problem is that keeping hydrangeas looking their best through a Texas summer requires a level of attention that a lot of gardeners find exhausting, and certain varieties never quite perform the way they do in cooler,…
Blueberries in Texas are a rewarding crop when they are managed well, producing fruit that tastes nothing like what you find in a grocery store and coming back year after year with increasing productivity as the plants mature. June is one of the most critical months in the Texas blueberry calendar, sitting right in the…
Lightning bug numbers have been dropping across Texas for years, and while habitat loss and light pollution get most of the blame, what happens in individual yards contributes more to the decline than most homeowners realize. The habits that quietly work against lightning bugs are not dramatic or obviously destructive. They are ordinary parts of…
What if the most difficult growing conditions in your West Texas yard turned out to be exactly what the right plants have been waiting for? Dry, rocky soil is not a problem to be fixed before gardening can happen. For the right groundcovers, it is simply home. West Texas presents a set of growing challenges…
June in Texas feels like it should still be a viable planting month, and for some crops it genuinely is. For others, putting them in the ground right now is setting yourself up for a season of frustration that ends with very little to show for the effort. Texas June heat is not just warm,…
June in Texas feels like it should still be a viable planting month, and for some crops it genuinely is. For others, putting them in the ground right now is setting yourself up for a season of frustration that ends with very little to show for the effort. Texas June heat is not just warm,…
Passionflower vine is one of those plants that makes people stop and look twice the first time they see it bloom. The flowers are unlike anything else growing in a Texas garden, intricate and almost otherworldly in their structure, and they show up repeatedly through the season in a way that keeps a fence interesting…
What would it feel like to walk out to your Texas backyard and have the air itself stop you in your tracks? Fragrant vines do something that almost no other garden plant can match. They fill an entire outdoor space with scent that shifts through the day, peaks in the evening, and turns a simple…
Boxwood blight is one of the more alarming things a Texas gardener can encounter, and the speed at which it moves through a planting is what makes it particularly stressful. Healthy looking shrubs can deteriorate rapidly once the disease takes hold, and by the time the damage becomes visually obvious, it has often already spread…
Texas summers have a way of turning garden watering from a pleasant routine into an exhausting obligation, and plants that demand consistent moisture through the hottest months can feel like a liability rather than an asset. The good news is that a genuine Texas summer garden does not have to run on a hose. There…
Tick control in Texas usually means chemicals, treatments along yard perimeters, and staying vigilant during outdoor activity. Those approaches work, but they require consistent effort and cover only a limited area at a time. What gets far less attention is the role that specific plants can play in creating a yard environment that ticks find…
How many times have you spotted something in your Texas garden, taken a step back, and immediately started thinking about how to get rid of it? Texas has a well-earned reputation for creatures that mean business, and that reputation tends to make gardeners suspicious of anything that looks even slightly threatening. The problem is that…
Roses in Texas already face enough pressure from heat, humidity, and pests without the wrong neighboring plants making things worse. Most gardeners think carefully about what roses need in terms of sun, water, and soil, but the plants growing nearby rarely get the same consideration. That oversight can quietly undermine even a well cared for…
Mealy blue sage is one of the most reliable bloomers in a Texas garden, and when it is managed well, it can carry color from spring all the way into November without much fuss. The key word is managed, because there is a specific window right now where a little focused attention makes an enormous…
How many pink perennials have you planted in a Texas summer only to watch them fade, wilt, or give up entirely before August even arrives? Pink is one of the hardest colors to hold in a Texas garden through peak heat, partly because so many of the plants that produce it were bred for cooler…
Weeds have a system. They find bare soil, they move in fast, and they make themselves completely at home before you even notice what happened. Many gardeners respond by pulling, spraying, and mulching, then doing it all over again next season. What if the garden itself could do the work instead? There is a group…
You’re out in the Texas backyard on a warm summer morning, coffee in hand, feeling good about life, and then you nearly walk face-first into an enormous web stretched between your tomato cages. And sitting right in the middle of it is a large, patterned spider that looks like it has absolutely no intention of…
There is something about a mandevilla in full bloom that makes a Texas patio look like it belongs in a magazine. Those bold pink, red, and white flowers climbing up a trellis or spilling out of a container are genuinely hard to walk past without stopping for a second look. But here’s the part the…
Dragonflies are one of the most effective natural mosquito hunters in existence, and a Texas yard that attracts them consistently is a yard that is working for you through the entire summer. The challenge is that dragonflies do not just appear because conditions are warm and bugs are plentiful. They have specific habitat requirements, and…
Ticks in Texas are a year-round concern in many parts of the state, and the edges of a property where maintained yard meets natural vegetation are where they tend to concentrate most heavily. Standard tick management involves treatments, barrier sprays, and a lot of vigilance, but those approaches require ongoing effort and cover only a…
Most Texas fruit gardens run on a fairly predictable list. Figs, peaches, citrus in the southern parts of the state, maybe blueberries with the right soil adjustments. That list is reliable, but it barely scratches the surface of what is actually possible in Texas growing conditions. A smaller but growing group of Texas gardeners has…
A fence line in Texas takes a beating through summer that most plants simply cannot handle. Full sun exposure, heat radiating off the fence itself, and dry soil along the perimeter create conditions that cause many popular choices to drop leaves, fade out, or look genuinely ragged by August. The result is a fence that…
Foundation plantings are the first line of landscaping most homeowners think about in terms of curb appeal, but they can also serve a far more practical purpose that rarely gets discussed. Rats looking for entry points into a home tend to work along the foundation, using dense low plantings as cover while they search for…
Texas clay has a long memory. It remembers every mistake you made last season, and it will remind you of almost every single one the next time it rains. Many Texas gardeners have tried something. A bag of sand. A layer of gravel. A truckload of topsoil spread hopefully over the surface. Some of it…
Black-Eyed Susans are basically the life of the Texas garden party. Those bold golden petals, that dark chocolate center, standing tall and cheerful while everything around them wilts in the summer heat. Honestly, what’s not to love? These native beauties were practically built for Texas conditions, slotting perfectly into cottage borders, pollinator patches, and native-inspired…
If scorpions keep showing up around your Texas home no matter what you do, your yard might actually be rolling out the welcome mat for them. Frustrating, right? Texas weather keeps these creatures active for a good chunk of the year, and the tricky part is that a lot of totally normal yard habits are…
Texas clay soil has a way of narrowing the plant selection conversation down to a short and unsatisfying list. It drains poorly, compacts under pressure, and holds moisture unevenly in ways that cause root problems for plants that were not designed to handle it. Most gardeners either amend constantly, replace plants that do not make…
Spotting a fox in a Texas yard tends to produce one of two reactions, quiet amazement or quiet alarm, and both are understandable. Foxes are striking animals, and seeing one up close in a residential setting raises questions that most homeowners are not sure how to answer. Is it healthy? Is it a problem? Does…
Oleander has been a go-to choice in Texas landscaping for decades, and it is not hard to see why it caught on. It grows fast, handles heat and drought without complaint, and produces showy blooms through conditions that finish off more delicate plants. The problem is that oleander is also one of the most toxic…
Rock mulch became a popular landscaping choice in Texas partly because it does not burn, and in fire-prone areas that is a real consideration worth taking seriously. The problem is that rock mulch absorbs heat, radiates it back through the night, raises soil temperatures significantly, and creates growing conditions that stress the plants it surrounds….
What if the fence running along the edge of your yard could pull in hummingbirds all season long while looking like something you actually planned? Most fences in Texas are functional at best and forgettable at worst, but the right climbing plants turn that structure into something worth looking at and a genuine draw for…
There’s something about spotting a mourning dove in your Texas yard that just makes you stop for a second. Maybe it’s perched quietly on your fence, doing absolutely nothing in the most graceful way possible, or pecking around the lawn like it owns the place. Either way, these soft-feathered birds have a presence that feels…
June in Texas is when certain garden pests shift from a background annoyance to a real problem, and the window between catching them early and dealing with a full infestation is shorter than most gardeners expect. These are not random visitors. The same pests show up in Texas gardens every June on a predictable schedule,…
Esperanza is one of those Texas plants that can either coast through the season producing a modest amount of color or absolutely take off and bloom from summer well into fall depending on how it is managed. The difference between those two outcomes is largely decided right now, before the peak heat of summer locks…
Swallowtail butterflies passing through Texas during migration are one of the more quietly spectacular events in the natural calendar, and most people miss the best of it simply because their yards are not set up to pull these butterflies in and hold them. Swallowtails are not just looking for flowers to land on. They have…
Salvia is one of the most reliable performers in a Texas garden, but reliable through summer and reliable through brutal heat are two different things without the right preparation. The weeks before temperatures lock in at their worst are actually one of the most important windows for giving salvia what it needs to bloom consistently…
Groundcovers are one of the most practical tools in a Texas landscape, filling in bare ground, controlling erosion, and cutting down on the weeding and watering that open soil demands. The problem is that some of the most widely available and commonly planted options have ended up on Texas invasive species lists, and a few…
Texas spring containers have a little trouble story, and it starts the moment you stop looking at them. One week, they are stunning. Three weeks later, they look like something you should apologize to. The heat is partly to blame. But the real problem runs deeper than that. Most gardeners respond to struggling containers the…
Let’s be real: stepping into a Texas backyard in July can feel a lot like opening an oven door. The blazing afternoon sun, the heat that just refuses to quit, the occasional stretch without a single drop of rain. It’s a lot. But here’s the thing, having a small backyard does not mean you have…
If rosemary could pick its own living situation in Texas, it would absolutely choose a pot. No question. This Mediterranean herb has very strong opinions about its roots, and Texas soil, with all its heavy clay, unpredictable rainfall, and scorching summer heat, is not exactly what rosemary had in mind. Growing it in the ground…
