Silky tents stretching across tree branches can seem to appear overnight during September. When several show up together, even a familiar tree can suddenly look completely different. Those webs are often connected to caterpillars preparing for another stage of their life cycle. In Georgia, fall webworms can build nests around leaves near the ends of…

Fuzzy black and brown caterpillars crossing driveways and patios can become hard to miss once cooler weather arrives. Their appearance often feels mysterious than it really is. These woolly bears spend fall moving around for a practical reason tied to the season ahead. That movement can bring them across Georgia yards, especially where gardens, leaves,…

An established crape myrtle in the wrong spot can tempt you to move it instead of starting over with another tree. That solution sounds easier than it often turns out to be. Years in the same location allow a crape myrtle to develop roots far beyond the trunk. Digging it up means disturbing much of…

English ivy can stay green and look harmless while it quietly spreads beyond the place you intended. October gives you a chance to get ahead of it. By then, the growing season is shifting, but the ivy remains easy to recognize among changing plants. That visibility matters when vines have slipped beneath shrubs or stretched…

A Georgia fence line can look tidy, evergreen, and completely harmless while quietly causing problems beyond the property line. The issue often starts with a shrub gardeners have used for decades. It fills narrow spaces. It keeps color through winter. Birds visit the berries, and the plant seems tough enough to survive almost anywhere without…

Monkey grass may be familiar, but familiar does not always make it the most interesting choice. This fall, consider giving that garden space a fresh direction. Native groundcovers can bring a completely different character to areas where liriope usually gets planted. In Georgia, one particular option deserves attention as planting season approaches. You can create…

Reaching for lawn fertilizer in September might feel like responsible maintenance, especially when your zoysia still looks green. That extra feeding, however, may work against what the grass needs next. Zoysia follows a seasonal growth cycle, and Georgia lawns gradually begin preparing for dormancy as cooler weather approaches. Pushing fresh growth too late can interfere…

Next summer’s fig harvest starts taking shape long before warm weather returns, which makes fall care more important than it might seem. One simple task deserves attention once this year’s growing season slows. Your tree has spent months supporting leaves, new growth, and developing fruit. As that activity winds down, Georgia gardeners get a useful…

Rosemary can sail through months of heat and still struggle when winter brings a completely different challenge. Fall is your chance to prepare the plant before colder nights arrive. That preparation starts with understanding what rosemary dislikes most once temperatures begin dropping. This Mediterranean herb handles dry conditions well, but winter brings concerns that summer…

Peeling bark can make a healthy crape myrtle look like something has gone wrong, especially when fresh patches suddenly appear along the trunk. Resist the urge to treat it as damage. That changing bark is often part of what makes mature crape myrtles so distinctive. As older outer layers loosen, smoother bark underneath becomes visible…

A tray of stocky broccoli and cauliflower transplants sits by the back door, roots ready to go, while the Georgia forecast still reads 93 degrees with a heat index pushing into the triple digits. That’s the strange math of fall brassicas in this state. Cool season crops, asked to begin their lives in what still…

The azaleas looked perfectly healthy going into fall. Green, full, no signs of stress. A quick trim to tidy things up before winter, and the yard looked exactly the way it should. Spring arrived and the bloom season was disappointing. A few scattered flowers. Mostly green. Nothing close to what the shrub produced the year…

Picture a gardener in Macon standing over an empty row in early August, seed packet in hand, sweat dripping off her chin while the thermometer on the shed reads 96 degrees. Planting beans in that kind of weather feels wrong on every level, yet waiting too long means frost will end the harvest before the…

That familiar orange breast may suddenly seem much easier to spot once fall settles over the yard. Robins can become more noticeable as their seasonal habits begin to change. Instead of staying spread out in smaller summer groups, many start gathering and moving around together. That shift can bring larger numbers into places offering useful…

Georgia yards can be stubborn in the funniest way. You water, seed, rake, repeat, and that one patch still looks at grass like it owes rent. Under the oak, on the slope, beside the gate, near the soggy dip, the lawn keeps losing the argument. The twist? That “problem spot” may be the best part…

There is a damp, shady strip behind the garage in plenty of Georgia yards, the kind of forgotten corner where grass thins out and weeds take over year after year. Then late summer arrives, and suddenly that neglected spot is covered in soft, fuzzy clusters of periwinkle blue just as the rest of the garden…

You used to see them every summer. Bright yellow, hanging sideways off a stem, working through a dried flower head. Then a soft call and off to the next one. Now the yard is quieter, and it’s easy to assume the birds left the neighborhood. They probably didn’t. Here’s what usually changed. Goldfinches eat seed…

The cucumber vines look incredible. Full, lush, covered in bright yellow flowers from one end to the other. Every Georgia gardener who sees them assumes a serious harvest is coming. Then nothing happens. The flowers open, linger for a day, and drop off without leaving anything behind. Week after week the vines keep producing blooms…

It usually starts on a still June evening in Georgia, when the air stops moving, the dew hangs on until mid-morning, and a gardener stands by the tomato row wondering how long those healthy green leaves will actually stay that way. Humidity is what fungal diseases like early blight and septoria leaf spot love most….

September lawn care decisions can shape how your grass handles the colder months ahead. A mistake made during this transition period may not show problems right away, but the effects can appear later. Many homeowners focus on keeping lawns green without considering what the grass needs before winter arrives. Timing and technique both matter when…

Not every tropical looking plant comes from somewhere warm and exotic. One strange native tree can create that illusion without ever leaving its home territory. Its oversized leaves give the first surprise, creating a bold shape that stands apart from familiar woodland trees. Then you notice the sharp prickles covering its stems and trunk, and…

Something tore through the ground overnight, leaving patches of soil flipped and grass disturbed by morning. Damage like that can point toward a much larger visitor. Feral hogs use their powerful snouts to root through soil while searching for food beneath the surface. The result can look very different from the smaller holes left by…

Some trees earn their place in a yard by offering something interesting in more than one season. Sourwood is one native choice that deserves another look this fall. Its appeal becomes especially clear when the growing season begins shifting toward cooler weather. Rather than fading quietly into the background, sourwood can bring rich autumn color…

Few insects can disappear against a branch as convincingly as the strange visitor resting in your yard. Its long body may leave you wondering exactly what you found. That unusual shape is camouflage, helping the insect blend with twigs while spending time among plants. Stick insects live in Georgia, and their surprising appearance can make…

A Georgia yard went strangely quiet last fall after a big tree cleanup hauled away fallen limbs, leaf litter, and an old hollow trunk where an owl had often perched through the cooler months. Nobody meant any harm. The cleanup looked responsible, even tidy, exactly the kind of yard work most homeowners take pride in…

Finding what looks like a volunteer tomato among your garden plants can feel like an unexpected bonus. That excitement should wait until you know exactly what appeared. One toxic weed can resemble a tomato enough to cause confusion, especially before its obvious features develop. The resemblance matters because both plants belong to the same botanical…

Some garden flowers are already losing steam when one native wildflower finally decides to put on its show. Its timing makes the change noticeable. Instead of competing with the busiest part of summer, its blooms arrive as the season begins turning toward fall. That later start brings fresh color into Georgia gardens when many plants…

The thermometer on the back porch reads 97 degrees, first week of August, and a tray of young collard seedlings sits there waiting to go in the ground. Anyone who has tried this before knows the strange feeling of planting for fall while summer flatly refuses to pack up and leave. Somehow, gardeners across Georgia…

Peonies can seem completely finished by September, especially when their spring flowers have been gone for months. Yet what happens now still matters for the next display. The leaves that remain are doing useful work even without a single bloom in sight. Their condition can influence how well the plant stores energy before colder weather…

Yellowjackets can turn a patch of yard into a place that suddenly demands your attention. The tricky part is that their nest may be hidden underground. Instead of looking for a visible hive, watch for repeated insect traffic disappearing into one small opening. That entrance can blend easily with grass, bare ground, or areas around…

By the third week without rain, a Georgia flower bed can start looking like a disaster zone. Hydrangeas flopped over. Impatiens crisped brown. Grass crunching underfoot with every step. Then there’s that one corner of the yard nobody’s touched in weeks. A patch of lantana and black-eyed Susan just keeps throwing out color, completely unbothered,…

Fall can turn a shrub into one of the busiest places in your yard when migrating birds discover its fruit. That seasonal activity is exactly what makes this native plant special. While many garden favorites are winding down, American beautyberry begins showing off clusters of purple fruit. Those berries are more than decoration during a…

Bright berries and colorful leaves can make an unfamiliar vine look like something worth keeping. That first impression can change quickly once you see how aggressively it grows. Some ornamental looking vines can climb over shrubs, fences, and young trees while spreading into new spaces. Porcelain berry is one example Georgia gardeners should learn to…

Bluebirds that seemed scattered through summer can suddenly become much easier to notice once September arrives. You may even spot several sharing the same stretch of yard. That change is connected to a seasonal shift in how these familiar birds spend their time. After the nesting season, bluebirds can begin forming loose groups and exploring…

Acorns scattered across the lawn can seem strangely early when the trees above still look fully dressed for summer. Yet an early drop can have several explanations. That timing often reflects what the oak has experienced during the growing season. Weather, tree condition, and normal differences between oak species can all influence when acorns begin…

The porch thermometer reads 98. You glance at the azaleas, notice they look shaggy, and reach for the hedge shears out of pure habit. That instinct makes sense. Messy shrub, obvious solution. Except the timing is the whole problem. Here’s what happens to a plant during a Georgia heat wave: every leaf is already working…
