OHIO

Sweet corn in an Ohio backyard sounds like the ultimate summer dream. Warm days, rich soil, fresh ears straight from the garden: honestly, the vision is perfect. The reality, however, has a way of being a little more complicated. A lot of Ohio gardeners plant a few hopeful rows in late spring and end up…

Lantana in Ohio has a reputation for being low maintenance, and for the most part that reputation holds. But low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. There is one specific task that separates the lantana plants that bloom nonstop through summer from the ones that start strong and quietly run out of steam by August….

Monarch butterflies have never been just a butterfly in the Midwestern imagination. Long before migration patterns were mapped and milkweed planting campaigns existed, people across Ohio and the broader Midwest attached meaning to monarchs. They noticed when one showed up at a particular moment, in a particular place, in a way that felt like more…

Buying herbs at a grocery store and buying them from the farm that grew them are two entirely different experiences. Ohio gardeners who have made that switch tend not to go back. The variety is better, the plants are stronger, and there is something about walking a working herb field that changes how you think…

Ohio clay soil has a reputation that arrives before you even pick up a shovel. Heavy. Sticky after rain. Concrete-hard in August. The kind of soil that makes experienced gardeners wince and new gardeners question their life choices. Many people reach for the tiller as the obvious solution. Break it up. Turn it over. Start…

Lilacs get a lot of attention in May and almost none in June. The blooms fade, the excitement moves on, and most Ohio gardeners walk past their lilac bushes for the rest of the month without giving them a second thought. That inattention in June is quietly setting up next spring’s disappointment. There is a…

There are not many wildlife moments that stop you in your tracks quite like spotting a luna moth on a warm Ohio summer night. Those pale green wings, the elegant trailing tails, the whole ethereal vibe: it genuinely feels like something out of a nature documentary happening right in your own backyard. Absolutely worth staying…

Ticks do not drop out of the sky. They move along the ground, strategically, following connected, humid, shaded pathways that keep them from drying out. Ohio fence lines, the way most homeowners manage them, create exactly that kind of pathway and aim it straight at the yard. Most people think about ticks in terms of…

A luna moth in your Ohio yard is not something you forget. That wingspan, that color, that almost surreal stillness when it lands somewhere close enough to really look at. Most people see one and immediately want to know what it means that this creature found its way to their particular patch of Ohio. Luna…

Watering the yard feels like responsible lawn care. You are keeping things green, protecting your investment, doing right by your plants through Ohio’s unpredictable summer stretches. Nobody waters their yard thinking about what else they might be encouraging to move in. Ticks need moisture to survive. Not standing water, not a swamp, just the kind…

Late June is one of those quietly important moments in the Ohio garden that it is really easy to scroll right past. The spring excitement has settled down, summer is officially doing its thing, and the viburnums are just kind of sitting there looking fine. But here’s why it’s worth paying closer attention right now:…

Most Ohio shrubs have one good season and spend the rest of the year blending into the background. They earn their keep for a few weeks, then become part of the scenery you stop noticing. A yard full of single-season shrubs is a yard that only really works in short bursts. Four-season shrubs play a…

Plant them once and Ohio does the rest. That is the promise of a good self-sowing flower, and when it delivers, it is one of the most satisfying things a garden can do. Seeds drop, winter passes, and come spring new plants appear exactly where you want them, and sometimes in spots you never would…

Hostas have a reputation for being bulletproof, and through spring that reputation holds up well. They push out of the ground reliably, fill in fast, and make shady Ohio beds look lush without much effort. Then June arrives and that easygoing reputation gets tested in ways most hosta growers never saw coming. June is a…

Ohio hostas have a reputation. Reliable. Shade-loving. The kind of plant that fills difficult corners without requiring much thought. And then August arrives and the performance review gets complicated. Pale leaves. Papery edges. Clumps that looked lush in May suddenly looking like they need a long rest somewhere cooler. Ohio gardeners tend to accept this…

A dragonfly landed on a tomato cage in an Ohio backyard this summer and stayed there for twenty minutes. The gardener who noticed it did not think much of it at first. Then it came back the next day. And the day after that. Ohio gardeners have been noticing this more often lately, and most…

Walk through most Ohio neighborhoods and you will see the same shrubs repeated yard after yard. Burning bush, knockout roses, endless rows of arborvitae. They are fine. They do a job. But they have crowded out a shrub that outperforms most of them in almost every category and somehow still ends up overlooked at the…

Empty garden beds have a way of looking like wasted potential. That is especially true in Ohio, where the growing season has a hard stop and bare soil sits exposed through some of the harshest months of the year. Most gardeners just leave those beds alone and hope for the best come spring. There is…

Adding sand to clay soil sounds logical. Clay is dense and compacted, sand is loose and gritty, mix the two together and you get something better. It is the kind of advice that gets passed around at garden centers, repeated in old gardening books, and shared between neighbors with complete confidence. It is also one…

Lantana is hard to argue with in the moment. The color is bold, the blooms are nonstop, and pollinators absolutely mob it all summer long. But every fall, Ohio gardeners face the same reality. It is not coming back. Out it comes, and come spring you are at the nursery starting the whole cycle over…

Redbuds are stunning and nobody is arguing otherwise. That cloud of pink in early spring turns heads every single time. But in a tight Ohio front yard, a redbud can outgrow its welcome faster than most homeowners anticipate, and what seemed like a perfect fit at the nursery becomes a pruning problem within a few…

Many Ohio homeowners assume the water in their yard is their business. Their property. Their lawn. Their drainage problem to solve however they see fit. That assumption holds up fine until the neighbor’s basement floods. Until the permit violation notice arrives. Until the contractor realizes the French drain outlet was installed somewhere it was never…

Ohio native plant nurseries are not like big box garden centers. Stock is limited, seasons are short, and the plants serious gardeners actually want tend to disappear fast. Show up two weekends too late and you are walking out with whatever nobody else wanted. This season, a handful of native plants are flying off the…

If something in your Ohio backyard has been quietly taking over all summer and you can’t quite figure out what it is, there’s a decent chance it’s field bindweed. And if it is, you have our full sympathy. This vine is a committed opportunist. Garden beds, fence lines, shrub borders, lawn edges: it genuinely does…

A luna moth landing in your backyard is the kind of moment that stops you mid-sentence. That wingspan, that color, that almost unreal elegance. Most people see one once and spend the next several years hoping it happens again. Hope is not a strategy, though. Luna moths are not wandering randomly. They are looking for…

Ohio clay soil has a reputation, and it has earned every bit of it. It cracks in the heat, drowns roots in the rain, and turns into something resembling concrete by the time fall planting season rolls around. Most gardeners just accept it as part of life here. But there is one thing you can…

Central Ohio has plant nurseries that most gardeners have never heard of and that is genuinely their loss. Not every great nursery has a billboard on Route 23 or a sponsored post showing up in a Facebook feed. Some of the best ones are tucked down county roads, operating out of converted barns, or sitting…

Most Ohio gardeners grab the shears after blooming season with the best intentions. The spent flowers look messy, the bed needs tidying, and cutting things back feels like the responsible move. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it sets a plant back an entire season or costs the garden something that cannot be undone until next year….

A black swallowtail landing in your garden has a way of making everything else stop. That slow, deliberate flight, the bold pattern on the wings, the way it takes its time moving from flower to flower like it has nowhere more important to be. It is one of those moments that reminds you why you…

June is the best month to walk an Ohio arboretum and it is not particularly close. Everything is at full volume. The canopy is thick, and the understory is blooming. The kind of quiet that only exists inside a mature tree collection settles over you about two minutes past the entrance gate. The best part…

Green beans and Ohio summers: a classic combination that sounds simple until the heat rolls in and suddenly nothing is going quite right. The soil dries out fast, the plants start looking stressed, and the instinct is to grab the hose and water every single day. Completely understandable. Here’s the thing though: frequent shallow watering…

Most Ohio homeowners think about tick prevention in terms of what they spray or what they wear. The yard itself rarely comes into the conversation, which is exactly the problem. A lawn that is managed a certain way does not just tolerate ticks. It actively creates the conditions they need to survive and spread. Ohio…

Boxwood has been the default foundation shrub in Ohio yards for decades, and it is not hard to understand why. Tidy, evergreen, and easy to shape into whatever form a foundation bed demands. But boxwood in Ohio comes with a growing list of problems. Disease pressure, winter damage, and a maintenance routine that adds up…

A cutting garden that actually keeps up with you through an entire Ohio season is rarer than most gardeners expect. You get a flush of blooms in June, cut them back with confidence, and then spend July waiting for a comeback that arrives late, sparse, or not at all. By August the whole operation feels…

The tomato plants look healthy. The flowers are opening right on schedule. And yet the fruit set is disappointing in a way that does not match any obvious problem. No pests. No disease. No visible damage. Just flowers that open, linger, and drop without ever becoming tomatoes. Ohio gardeners growing in hoop houses, high tunnels,…

Ohio monarch gardeners plant milkweed. They wait. They watch. And then they spend most of August wondering why the yard still feels quiet compared to what they expected. Milkweed is essential. That part is not in dispute. But it only solves half the problem. Adult monarchs need fuel. Enormous amounts of it. They are preparing…

There is something genuinely delightful about spotting an Eastern Box Turtle making its unhurried way through a garden bed, stopping to investigate a strawberry or disappearing into a shady corner like it has somewhere important to be. These charming reptiles are one of Ohio’s most recognized woodland creatures, and they have excellent taste in real…

Smooth hydrangeas are supposed to be the easygoing ones. Tough, reliable, native to Ohio, and capable of putting on a solid bloom show through summer. Then July arrives, a good rain moves through, and the whole plant is face down in the mulch. Stems everywhere, blooms buried, the kind of flop that makes you question…

Lantana that refuses to bloom is one of the most frustrating puzzles in the Ohio garden. The foliage looks full, the stems are strong, the plant is clearly alive and growing. By every visible measure, things look fine. And yet, nothing. Week after week of green leaves and zero flowers while every photo you see…

There is something about a firefly that stops you mid-thought. One blink of cold light across a dark yard and suddenly you are eight years old again, barefoot in the grass, convinced the night is full of magic. Few things in the natural world land quite like that first firefly of the season. But fireflies…

Almost every Ohio yard has at least one of these spots. The narrow strip along the fence where nothing seems to take hold. The gap between the foundation and the first shrub bed where the soil stays dry. The corner under the overhang that looks like a gardening problem with no obvious solution. Many gardeners…

Ohio has no shortage of garden centers. They are everywhere, and most of them carry the same rotating cast of popular perennials, ornamental grasses, and shrubs. You could find many of them at any big box store if you looked hard enough. Convenient, sure. But if you are serious about native plants, convenient rarely cuts…

Arborvitae rows look great along an Ohio property line, and honestly, that thick evergreen privacy screen is hard to beat. But here’s the thing about all that dense, layered foliage: it is really good at hiding problems. Bagworms are one of the most frustrating pests Ohio arborvitae owners deal with, and the genuinely sneaky part…

Boxwoods are the backbone of a lot of Ohio yards. Reliable, structured, evergreen. Most homeowners plant them, trim them occasionally, and assume they will just handle themselves. That assumption holds up fine until summer arrives. Then the shrubs start telling a different story through yellowing leaves, thinning patches, and that washed out color that is…

Lantana has a reputation for toughness, and in the ground it mostly earns that reputation. Stick it in a container though, and the rules change in ways that catch a lot of Ohio gardeners off guard. What works in a garden bed can quietly work against you the moment lantana goes into a pot. Watering…

Carpenter bees are single minded about wood, and an Ohio porch gives them exactly what they are looking for. Those perfectly round holes showing up in your railings, eaves, and fascia boards are not random. Carpenter bees are methodical, and once they find a spot they like, they come back to it season after season….

June and hydrangeas in Ohio: a combination that confuses even experienced gardeners every single year. The shrubs look incredible, fresh growth is pushing out everywhere, a few blooms might already be showing up, and the urge to grab the pruners and clean things up is completely understandable. Here’s the problem though: cutting at the wrong…

Ticks do not materialize out of thin air. They need specific conditions to survive, including certain humidity levels and amounts of shade. They also need specific kinds of cover to wait out the heat while they look for a host. Some of the most common plants in Ohio yards are delivering exactly that, all season…

Oakleaf hydrangeas have a reputation for being easygoing, and in the right spot, that reputation holds up. But Ohio gardeners are making one very specific shade mistake with this plant, and it shows up in the same frustrating ways every single season. Weak blooms, leggy growth, a shrub that looks like it is just getting…

Hostas are everywhere in Ohio shade gardens, and honestly, it is not hard to understand why. They are reliable, easy to find, and fill a difficult spot without much fuss. But reliable and exciting are two very different things, and a lot of gardeners are starting to feel like their shady beds deserve better. June…

There is a window in the Ohio spring calendar that serious flower lovers talk about in almost reverential terms. It opens sometime around mid-May. It closes before most people realize it was there. During the few weeks it stays open, certain gardens across the state look like something staged specifically to make visitors stop walking…

Ohio backyards can be genuinely beautiful, and if yours has shady garden beds, wooded edges, and that lush, layered look that feels like a personal retreat, you have clearly put in the work. Here’s the part nobody loves to hear though: ticks think your yard looks great too. The same features that make a backyard…

Peonies are the rock stars of the Ohio garden. They show up, they dazzle, and then June rolls around and most gardeners just walk away, assuming the job is done until next spring. That one assumption is costing you bigger, better blooms year after year. There is a single task that makes a dramatic difference…

Every gardener has that one plant. The one that looked incredible in the nursery, made it home, shot up beautifully, and then face-planted into the mulch right before company came over. Ohio summers have a way of humbling even the most confident garden plans. Staking is one of those tasks that feels like a chore…

Crabgrass is stubborn, ugly, and laughs in the face of most homeowners every single summer. You pull it, it comes back. You spray it, your kids and pets pay the price. At some point, you have to ask yourself if there’s a smarter way to fight this battle. There might be. And native plant world…

Many Ohio gardeners blame the winter. The winter is only part of the story. What actually determines whether a hydrangea survives has less to do with how cold it gets and more to do with decisions made the previous fall, or even at the nursery before the plant ever went in the ground. Have you…

Your grass cutting routine is rolling out the red carpet for ticks, and Ohio yards are paying the price for it this summer. Sounds dramatic? Ask anyone who has pulled a tick off their kid after an afternoon in the backyard. The way you mow, how often you do it, how short you cut it,…
