GEORGIA

Two clematis vines. Same fence. Same Georgia neighborhood. Same amount of sun and rain. One of them is loaded with blooms every season, the kind of display that stops people on the sidewalk. The other looks healthy enough but barely produces flowers, and the gardener behind it has been frustrated for years without knowing exactly…

Most gardeners spend spring and early summer waiting for their flowers to grow bigger, fuller, and more colorful. That is why cutting or pinching back a healthy plant can feel completely wrong. After weeks of growth, the last thing most people want to do is remove stems, buds, or fresh new growth that looks perfectly…

Nothing builds anticipation quite like a fig tree loaded with small green fruit. Weeks go by, the tree looks healthy, and everything seems to be moving in the right direction. That is why it can be so disappointing when harvest season arrives and the crop is much smaller than expected. At first, it is easy…

Few summer sights bring back memories quite like fireflies. One small flash appears in the yard, then another, and before long it feels like the entire evening has come alive. For many people, those glowing lights are part of what makes this season feel special. They turn ordinary backyards into places worth lingering a little…

Some birds are easy to miss. They blend into the background and become part of the everyday scenery. Others seem to grab attention the moment they appear. A single glimpse can be enough to make people stop, look again, and wonder if they really saw what they think they saw. That is part of the…

Sometimes the things that catch our attention in the garden are not the things we should be worried about. A leaf turns yellow, a flower fades early, or a plant grows a little slower than expected, and most people immediately start looking for a cause. Other changes are easier to dismiss. A dark coating on…

If something leafy and three-leaved is creeping along your Georgia fence line or climbing the oak tree out back, it might be time to take a closer look before getting any closer. Poison ivy is remarkably comfortable in Georgia yards, and the warm, humid summers here give it everything it needs to spread enthusiastically along…

Plant choices rarely stay popular forever. What homeowners wanted from a landscape twenty years ago is not always the same as what they want today. As new plants become available and landscaping goals change, older favorites often start losing some of the attention they once received. Native plants have become a much bigger part of…

Summer does not leave much room for mistakes in a vegetable garden. A crop may look strong one week and far less impressive a few weeks later once the heat settles in. Water disappears faster, soil dries out more quickly, and keeping vegetables growing well can start feeling like a full time job. By the…

Certain plants seem to show up again and again in the best looking yards. You notice them while driving through a neighborhood or visiting a local garden. They are not always the flashiest plants around, yet they somehow leave a stronger impression than many of the shrubs getting all the attention. Part of that appeal…

There is a window in the Georgia gardening calendar that many people miss entirely. It opens in mid-April and closes somewhere around beginning of June. What happens inside that window can determine how much the garden costs you for the rest of the season. Plants that would run fifteen or twenty dollars at a nursery…

There are certain moments in late spring and early summer when the air feels like it is constantly moving, even when everything else seems still. You might notice quick flashes of motion near flowers, a sudden pause in mid-air, or something small darting from one spot to another before disappearing just as quickly. Those brief…

Some landscapes seem to get better with age. A few years pass, plants fill in, and the whole yard starts looking more natural and established. Other areas never quite reach that point. No matter how much effort goes into them, they always seem to look unfinished. Woodland slopes are often like that. They sit somewhere…

Something was in the yard last night. You did not see it. You did not hear it. But this morning the lawn looks like someone went through it with a small shovel, leaving a trail of cone-shaped holes across the grass you spent the better part of spring getting right. Georgia homeowners who have been…

Georgia azaleas are one of the most forgiving plants in the landscape until you do one specific thing wrong with a pair of pruning shears. Then they become one of the least forgiving plants you can own. The frustrating part is that the mistake rarely announces itself. The shrub still looks healthy. Still stays green…

Every summer, somebody ends up asking the same question. How is that lawn still green? The question usually comes after weeks of hot weather when many yards are starting to show signs of stress. One lawn looks like it is hanging on until fall. Another still looks thick, healthy, and ready for a backyard gathering….

Green Giant Arborvitae became popular for a reason. Fast growth, year round privacy, and a neat appearance made it an easy choice for property lines, backyard screens, and landscape borders. Garden centers sold plenty of them, and homeowners planted them with the best intentions. Years later, some of those same plantings are creating a very…

Tiny bees are busy in Georgia gardens every day, yet most of them go completely unnoticed. Most people never notice them because they are small, easy to overlook, and rarely get the attention given to honey bees or bumblebees. Despite their size, these lesser known pollinators play an important role throughout the growing season. Many…

Dragonflies are doing something in your garden that many people never notice. They are hunting. Patrolling. Returning to the same spots over and over because something in that space is worth coming back to. A water source. A perch. A reliable concentration of smaller insects to chase. The yards where dragonflies show up consistently are…

Large landscape beds can look beautiful in photos. In real life, they often come with a problem that shows up long before shrubs and perennials have a chance to fill in. Bare soil sits exposed, weeds move in, and keeping everything tidy becomes an ongoing chore. That challenge is familiar to anyone with a large…

The first gardenia blooms of the season always seem to disappear too quickly. After waiting months for those bright white flowers and their unmistakable fragrance, many gardeners wish the display would last much longer than it does. By June, gardenias are entering one of the most important periods of their growing season. The shrubs are…

July in Georgia is not a forgiving month. The heat settles in like it owns the place, the humidity makes the air feel physical, and the garden that looked so full of promise in May starts showing signs of strain. Many Georgia gardeners respond by doing more. More fertilizer is where things go wrong. There…

Summer sun has a way of showing exactly what is working in a garden and what is not. Plants that looked balanced and healthy in spring can start to change quickly once the heat settles in. Some lose their shape, others slow down, and certain areas begin to feel harder to manage even when nothing…

Finding signs of small wildlife in outdoor spaces can catch people off guard. It is not always obvious at first, especially when movement is slow and easy to miss. A patch of leaves may shift slightly, or a quiet path through the ground may show that something has been passing through regularly without drawing attention….

Watching birds move through the garden adds a level of enjoyment that flowers alone cannot provide. Bright blooms may catch attention first, but wildlife is often what keeps people stopping to look a little longer. A quiet morning can become much more memorable when an unexpected visitor appears among the plants and shrubs. Colorful birds…

Some of the best plants for a Georgia yard are the ones that actually want to be there, and native ferns fall very firmly into that category. Those shaded spots under oaks and pines that seem impossible to fill? Ferns are often exactly what those areas have been waiting for. Georgia’s humidity, tree canopy, and…

There are certain sights that instantly feel like summer. Hearing crickets after sunset is one of them. Watching lightning bugs drift through the yard on a warm evening is another. For many people, those tiny flashes of light bring back memories of staying outside later than usual and enjoying the simple things that made summer…

Few gardening tasks cause more second guessing than watering during summer. The soil looks dry, so you water. A day later, parts of the garden still seem damp while certain plants look like they need another drink. It can feel like the garden is giving completely different signals at the same time. After seeing that…

There you are in the middle of June, standing over a daylily clump that has clearly outgrown its welcome. Barely blooming, completely crowded, roots tangled up like they’ve been plotting something underground all winter. The shovel is right there. The urge is real. But here’s the thing about dividing daylilies in June in Georgia: the…

Georgia has some of the most ecologically rich native trees in the entire country. Many of them are almost absent from the average garden center. What fills those aisles instead is the same predictable rotation nurseries have been selling for decades. Crepe myrtles. Bradford pears. Japanese maples. Plants that look familiar and move quickly off…

Few yard problems are more frustrating than watching healthy green grass slowly lose its color. The lawn looked great a few weeks ago, everything seemed on track, and there was no obvious reason to expect trouble. Then midsummer arrives and certain areas begin looking tired, thin, or discolored. It can leave people wondering what changed…

Not every useful thing in a garden comes from a seed packet. Some of the biggest helpers arrive on their own and get almost no credit for the work they do. They move quietly between flowers, shrubs, and vegetable plants while most people focus on watering, pruning, and pulling weeds. It is easy to pay…

Every yard seems to have that one spot that never cooperates. You try a few flowers, give them a chance to settle in, and hope for the best. For a while things look promising. Then the blooms fade, growth slows down, and that shady corner goes right back to looking empty. After enough disappointment, many…

Soil has a way of ending up exactly where you do not want it. After a strong rain, you might notice mulch sliding downhill, bare patches getting larger, or small channels forming across a slope. It is frustrating because the problem never seems completely solved. You fix one area, only to find another spot struggling…

Finding a tick on yourself or a pet can change the way you look at your yard almost instantly. One day everything seems normal, and the next you start wondering what is hiding in the grass, around the fence line, or beneath the shrubs. It is easy to assume ticks only show up in heavily…

Mulch does a lot of good things in a Georgia landscape bed. It holds moisture through hot summers, keeps soil temperature steady, and gives weeds very little opportunity to take hold around foundation plantings. But there’s a common application mistake that shows up in yards everywhere, and it involves piling mulch high against shrub stems…

When June arrives in Georgia, gardeners start making mental notes. What needs to come out. What might survive the heat. Which beds to let rest until fall. Most of that planning assumes summer is the hard season. The one to manage through rather than get excited about. That assumption is only partially right. Do you…

There is something satisfying about stepping outside and picking fresh herbs right when you need them. A few leaves for dinner, a handful for a recipe, or a quick snip for a drink can make a garden feel useful in a way that flowers alone never quite do. The challenge is timing. Plant too early…

Nothing creates false confidence in a vegetable garden quite like seeing everything look healthy. The leaves are green, plants are growing fast, and the garden seems to be doing exactly what it should. Then summer settles in, temperatures climb higher, and suddenly some crops start looking stressed even though they are being watered regularly. That…

Summer has a way of exposing which plants truly belong in a landscape. Some begin demanding more attention as temperatures rise, while others seem perfectly content carrying on as if nothing has changed. That difference becomes much more noticeable when weeks go by without significant rainfall. Nobody starts a garden hoping to spend the hottest…

Georgia summers have a reputation, and they earn it every single year. The heat climbs hard, the humidity settles in like it’s planning to stay forever, and by the time August arrives a lot of vegetable gardens are looking pretty tired. Some crops though just don’t get the memo. Certain vegetables are built for exactly…

Not every change in a yard happens because someone planted something new. Sometimes the biggest changes come from plants that were never supposed to take over in the first place. They start quietly, blend into the background, and seem harmless for a long time. Then one season you notice a tree looking more crowded than…

It is interesting how certain gardening habits stick around for years. People keep doing things the same way because that is how they have always seen them done. Then one day, a different approach starts showing up in more yards, and suddenly everyone is talking about it. Mulch is a good example. What once seemed…

Sloped yards and heavy Georgia rainstorms are not a great combination, and anyone who has watched soil and mulch wash downhill after a summer storm already knows exactly what that means for the yard. Clay-heavy soil on hillsides gives runoff almost nothing to hold onto, and the damage builds up faster than most homeowners expect….

Ruby-throated hummingbirds start arriving in Georgia as early as late March. They come in fast, they scout quickly, and they build loyalty to the yards that feed them well. The yards that get passed over are usually missing one thing. Not a feeder. Not a birdbath. Something that most gardeners do not think about until…

Few landscaping jobs seem as simple as filling the space beneath a tree. Then reality takes over. Grass starts thinning, weeds begin popping up, and the area never quite looks as finished as the rest of the yard. What should be one of the easiest parts of the landscape often becomes one of the most…

A surprising number of backyard traditions start without anyone planning them. A bird chooses a hanging basket, a flowerpot, or a shelf on the porch, and before long people start checking on it every day. What began as an ordinary corner of the yard suddenly feels much more important. Carolina Wrens have a habit of…

June tends to bring out the urge to tidy everything up. A few weeds get pulled, overgrown areas get trimmed back, and anything that looks messy suddenly feels like a project waiting to happen. After a couple of hours outside, the yard looks cleaner, more organized, and ready for the rest of summer. Most people…

Cherry laurel has earned its place in Georgia foundation beds, but it has also earned a reputation for outgrowing its welcome. What starts as a tidy, evergreen foundation shrub can turn into something much larger and harder to manage than most homeowners anticipated, especially when humid summers bring fungal pressure into the mix. Clay soil,…

Every garden has that one plant people keep checking on as summer gets closer. Not because something is wrong with it, but because the anticipation starts building. New growth appears, flower buds begin forming, and it becomes clear that the plant is getting ready for its biggest moment of the year. Oakleaf hydrangeas often fall…

A lot of gardeners have had the same conversation at some point. Someone spots a shrub covered in flowers and immediately asks what it is. The answer is often a hydrangea, followed by a second question about how much work it takes to keep looking that way through summer. That second answer is usually less…

Coneflowers in a Georgia summer garden are a genuinely satisfying sight, bold blooms, busy pollinators, and that easygoing toughness that makes them a favorite for good reason. They don’t ask for a lot, which is part of the appeal. But June is actually the perfect moment to spend a little quality time with these plants…

Georgia gardeners who wait until the first heat wave to think about mulch are already behind. Not slightly behind. Meaningfully behind, in ways that show up as wilted tomatoes, struggling blueberries, and hydrangeas that never quite recover their look from one week to the next. The problem is not the summer. The problem is the…

Few plants put on a summer show quite like a crepe myrtle. When covered in blooms, they become one of the most noticeable features in a yard, drawing attention long before many other trees and shrubs reach their peak. The trouble is that not every crepe myrtle performs the same way. Some fill with flowers…

A garden bed can look nearly perfect at the start of the season. Fresh growth fills in, flowers begin to bloom, and everything seems to be heading in the right direction. Then the weeds arrive. What looked tidy a few weeks earlier suddenly needs constant attention, and the same unwanted plants keep showing up no…

There was a time when spotting a Painted Bunting felt like a special part of spring for many people. A flash of bright color near a feeder or garden bed could turn an ordinary morning into something worth talking about for the rest of the day. Lately, however, plenty of people have noticed that these…

There is a very specific kind of frustration that comes with spreading fresh mulch on a shaded slope, stepping back to admire your work, and then watching the next Georgia rainstorm undo all of it in about twenty minutes. If that sounds familiar, you are definitely not alone. Shaded slopes are one of the trickier…
