Michigan’s gardens are shaped by nearby lakes, cooler summers, and long winters. Short growing seasons make timing, soil care, and plant selection especially important. With cold-hardy plants and thoughtful seasonal planning, gardens and outdoor spaces remain healthy, productive, and visually appealing throughout the year.
Blue spruce has been a Michigan front yard staple for decades, and it earned that spot honestly. The color is striking, the structure is strong, and it handles cold winters without any drama. But a lot of those majestic trees that went in twenty years ago are now enormous, crowding foundations, blocking windows, and creating…
Hostas have a loyal fan club in Michigan, and honestly, the loyalty is earned. They are familiar, leafy, and easy to tuck into a shady bed without much thought. But by late summer, something often changes. The garden still needs structure. The paths still need edges. Those corners still need plants that can carry the…
That white chalky coating showing up on your plant leaves isn’t doing anything subtle. Powdery mildew announces itself clearly, spreading across foliage in a way that looks bad and affects the plant’s ability to function properly through the rest of the season. Michigan’s humid summers create conditions where it moves fast, but the disease pressure…
A hydrangea that spent last summer looking stretched out, flopping over, and producing underwhelming blooms on long floppy stems is giving you useful information. Something in how it’s being grown isn’t matching what the plant actually needs, and the good news is that most of the causes behind weak, leggy hydrangeas are very fixable. The…
Michigan summers can flip fast. One stretch brings enough rain to keep everything lush and green, and then three weeks go by with nothing, the ground hardens, and suddenly keeping up with watering feels like a part-time job. Gardeners who’ve built their beds around the right native plants mostly just watch that dry stretch happen…
You head out to the garden expecting to pick a ripe tomato and find it cracked open instead, sometimes just a little, sometimes split clean across the top in a way that makes the whole fruit unusable. It’s one of the more discouraging things that happens in a Michigan summer garden, especially when the plant…
Boxwood has had a very long run in Michigan gardens, and it has earned a certain respect. Tidy, dependable, and perfectly happy being clipped into submission every season. But a growing number of Michigan gardeners are starting to wonder if a stiff little green border is really the most exciting thing a yard edge can…
It starts with a glance at the fence line and a vine you do not quite recognize. It is moving fast, the leaves look unfamiliar, and the immediate question is whether it is something to worry about. Michigan homeowners run into this situation regularly, especially in yards that back up to wooded edges or overgrown…
Black eyed Susans have earned their place in Michigan gardens fair and square. They’re reliable, they handle tough conditions, and that warm golden color fits the late summer landscape perfectly. But gardeners who’ve grown them for years know the downsides too. They spread aggressively, flop in certain spots, and can start feeling a little predictable…
A bare fence is basically a blank canvas, and Michigan gardeners have a long growing season to do something about it. Flowering vines are one of the most satisfying ways to transform a plain wooden fence, an empty pergola, or a trellis that has been standing there looking hopeful for two seasons running. Climbing hydrangea…
June in the Detroit area has this particular quality where it feels like summer is just getting started, so there’s plenty of time left for everything. That feeling is a little misleading. The planting window for several vegetables and flowers that still have a real shot at producing before fall is open right now, and…
Japanese beetles are a reliable summer frustration in Michigan, but there’s a real difference between a manageable population and a full-scale infestation, and your yard itself has more influence over that difference than most people realize. These beetles don’t just wander in randomly. They’re drawn by specific conditions, guided by scents released from certain plants,…
Nobody warns you that a mailbox can have a personality crisis. One day, it’s just a metal box on a stick. Next, you can’t stop wondering why it looks so sad and abandoned compared to the neighbor’s down the street. The difference between a forgettable mailbox and one that makes people slow down has nothing…
Not long ago, ticks in Michigan were mostly a concern for people hiking through the woods in late summer. That’s not the situation anymore. The season is starting earlier, the range is expanding, and ticks are showing up in ordinary suburban backyards well before most people have started thinking about prevention. Michigan gardeners who used…
Zucchini has a reputation for being so productive that gardeners joke about leaving bags of it on neighbors’ porches anonymously. But talk to enough Michigan gardeners and you find a surprising number of them struggling to get a decent harvest. The plants look healthy, the flowers show up, and then somehow the actual zucchini never…
Waiting three years for a perennial garden to look like something is a particular kind of patience that not everyone has, and honestly, you don’t need it. Michigan’s growing season is shorter than a lot of the country, but certain perennials use every week of it aggressively, pushing out new growth at a pace that…
There is a specific kind of Michigan spring morning that starts with coffee, ends with a long stare at the lawn, and somewhere in the middle involves the slow realization that moles have been very, very busy. The once-smooth grass is suddenly all ridges and mounds and raised tunnels that definitely were not there last…
Most conversations about tick prevention in Michigan gardens go straight to mulch barriers, chemical treatments, and keeping grass short. All reasonable, but there’s a native plant that rarely comes up in those conversations despite having a legitimate track record of making tick habitat less comfortable. It’s not flashy or widely talked about at garden centers,…
More garden space sounds great until you’re actually digging it, amending it, weeding it, and watering it all season long. The good news is that space isn’t actually the limiting factor for most tomato growers. The plants already in the ground are often capable of producing significantly more than they do, and the gap between…
There’s a stretch every Michigan summer when the rain just stops showing up. The forecast keeps teasing it, the ground gets hard, and gardens that depend on regular moisture start looking rough by August. Some gardeners water through it, hauling hoses around and running up water bills. Others have figured out a better approach: build…
Boxwood blight has been spreading through Michigan landscapes for several years now, and the window between first symptoms and serious damage is frustratingly short. A lot of gardeners notice something looks off but wait a few weeks to see if it improves on its own. By the time it’s clearly a problem, the blight has…
Boxwood removal has become one of the more common spring projects in Michigan yards, and the reasons are piling up faster than the plants can be replaced. Boxwood blight spread steadily through the state over recent years and showed little regard for how well the plants were maintained. Healthy, established shrubs declined quickly once it…
The edges of a Michigan yard are where tick pressure tends to be highest. The transition between maintained lawn and taller vegetation, wood lines, or neighboring properties creates exactly the kind of habitat ticks rely on to find hosts as people and animals move through. Most tick management strategies focus on treatment rather than prevention,…
Burning bush was planted in Michigan yards for one reason: the fall color. For a few weeks in October it is genuinely hard to match. The rest of the year it sits in the landscape offering very little, and the problems associated with it have become increasingly difficult to overlook. It spreads into natural areas…
Losing lavender over a Michigan winter is common enough that some gardeners have simply given up on it. The plant looks fine through fall, goes into the ground with good intentions, and comes out of winter either dry or so damaged it never fully recovers. The assumption is usually that the cold is the problem….
Tick pressure in Michigan yards is not evenly distributed. Some properties seem to have a persistent problem while neighboring yards with similar surroundings do not, and the difference almost always comes down to specific lawn and yard management habits rather than location alone. Certain common practices create conditions that ticks actively seek out, and most…
A walkway border in a Michigan yard has one job. Look good, stay low, and not turn into a project that needs dealing with every other weekend. That is not too much to ask, and yet the wrong plant choices make it feel that way constantly. Too tall and the path starts disappearing into greenery…
Michigan summers are short enough that spending them swatting mosquitoes on your own porch feels like a real loss. Most people reach for a spray and call it done, but the yard itself is usually doing a lot of the work of keeping mosquito populations high. Certain common habits and setup choices create breeding conditions…
Most tick prevention advice focuses on what you spray or what you wear, which makes sense, but your actual yard design plays a bigger role than most people realize. Ticks are picky about their habitat. They need moisture, shade, and dense low vegetation to survive and move around effectively. Certain plants disrupt those conditions naturally,…
Ground ivy has been creeping through Michigan yards for a long time, filling in shady spots where grass won’t grow and spreading without much encouragement. It looks harmless enough, but it creates exactly the kind of low, dense ground cover that ticks prefer for shelter and humidity. More Michigan gardeners are starting to make that…
Side yards are awkward. They’re often shady, sometimes narrow, and just neglected enough that nothing ever seems to thrive there for long. Add deer pressure to the situation and most gardeners give up entirely, throwing down some mulch and calling it a day. But Michigan has a solid lineup of native shrubs that are genuinely…
If you drink coffee every morning and garden every weekend, you are sitting on a surprisingly useful resource and probably not making the most of it. Used coffee grounds are one of those kitchen scraps that feel too simple to actually matter in a garden, which is exactly why so many people either toss them…
Every Michigan homeowner who has ever stood in a garden center holding a small shrub and thought “that looks about right for the front bed” knows exactly how this story goes. The plant looks manageable. The tag says something vague about mature size that nobody really reads. It goes in the ground two feet from…
Knockout roses built their reputation on being nearly impossible to mess up. They bloom heavily, bounce back from neglect, and handle Michigan summers without much complaint. So when they slow down or stop blooming altogether, it catches people off guard. The plant looks alive and healthy, the leaves are full, but the flowers just aren’t…
Grubs in a Michigan lawn rarely announce themselves until the damage is already visible, and by that point the population has been building for longer than most homeowners realize. What makes grub problems genuinely difficult is that the habits contributing to them are often the same habits people associate with taking care of their lawn….
There is a moment every Michigan summer when the backyard goes from relaxing to something you have to think twice about. It usually starts with finding a tick on a pet or noticing one on a kid after an afternoon outside. Suddenly the yard feels a little less carefree, and that is a feeling nobody…
Tick pressure in Michigan does not distribute itself evenly across the season. Spring is when the groundwork gets set, and the yards that deal with the fewest ticks through summer are almost always the ones where specific steps were taken early. It is not about a single treatment applied once and forgotten. It is about…
Hostas have held a near-monopoly on Michigan shade gardens for a long time, and it is not hard to understand why. They are reliable, widely available, and come in enough variety to fill almost any shaded space without much thought. But a growing number of Michigan gardeners have started looking for something different, and one…
A hosta that gets a little smaller each season is one of those garden problems that sneaks up on you. The plant is still there, still coming back, still green, so it rarely triggers the same urgency as something that dies outright. But a hosta that produces smaller leaves and thinner clumps year after year…
MDARD is sounding the alarm on several invasive pest and plant concerns this spring, and Michigan gardeners have good reason to pay attention. The agency has flagged issues that affect a wide range of home gardens across the state, and the concern is not about one isolated problem. It touches on plants that are common…
Full shade is one of the harder conditions to plant for in a Michigan garden, and the pollinator challenge in those spots is even more specific. Most pollinator planting advice is written for sunny borders where the choices are plentiful and the results are predictable. Shaded areas get far less attention, and the plants recommended…
Boxwood has been the automatic choice for edging garden beds in Michigan for decades, and the appeal is easy to understand. It holds its shape, stays green through winter, and provides clean structure that makes everything around it look more intentional. The problems have become harder to ignore. Boxwood blight has moved steadily through Michigan…
A rose bush that struggled through last summer is already telling you something about what went wrong, and spring is the right time to respond to it. The problems that make roses look poor through July and August in Michigan almost never start in July and August. They develop earlier in the season from conditions…
Peonies in Michigan produce some of the most impressive blooms of the entire spring garden, but the size and quality of those blooms is decided well before the flowers actually open. Most of what determines a strong peony display happens underground and in the weeks leading up to bud formation, during a window that closes…
Every Michigan gardener has a problem spot that mulch just cannot seem to fix. Maybe it is that steep bank along the driveway that looks great in April and completely bare by June. Maybe it is the dry, rooty ground under an old oak where nothing stays put and nothing much grows either. These are…
Some plants just show up every spring and get on with it. No reminders, no replanting, no trips back to the nursery to fill in the gaps. Michigan winters are brutal enough that any plant willing to come back reliably year after year deserves serious respect and a permanent spot in the garden. Long-lived perennials…
Spring is the most important time of year to deal with invasive plants in Michigan, and not just because the work is easier before the heat arrives. Many invasive species get their most aggressive growth done early in the season, establishing root systems and spreading seeds before native plants have fully woken up. By midsummer…
Shady areas in Michigan yards tend to attract ticks for the same reasons they are difficult to plant. They stay cool, hold moisture longer than open ground, and create the kind of humid low-light environment that ticks favor for survival and host-seeking. Leaving these areas bare or covered in leaf litter makes the problem worse….
Bare soil in a Michigan garden is basically an open invitation, and weeds are very good at RSVPing. Leave a patch of open ground under a tree or along a dry sunny bank and something will move in fast, and it is rarely anything you actually wanted there. Native groundcovers are the smarter answer to…
Lavender looks like it should thrive anywhere, and in a lot of climates it does. Michigan is more complicated. Zone 5 and 6 winters test lavender in ways that mild-climate gardening guides never prepare you for, and a lot of beautiful plants that perform flawlessly in photos and in warmer states simply do not survive…
Japanese beetles are one of the more demoralizing summer pests in Michigan. They arrive in numbers, feed in groups, and work through a plant methodically before moving to the next one. Traps tend to draw more beetles into the yard than they catch. Sprays require repeated applications and rarely keep up with an active infestation….
Bats have a reputation problem that has nothing to do with how useful they actually are in a Michigan garden. A single bat can consume hundreds of mosquitoes in one evening, and a small colony working a yard through summer makes a measurable difference in pest pressure without any chemicals, traps, or ongoing effort from…
Most Michigan homeowners dealing with heavy mosquito pressure assume it is just the season or the neighborhood. The reality is that a lot of yards are actively making the problem worse through habits that create ideal mosquito conditions without anyone intending to. Mosquitoes do not need much to establish themselves in large numbers. A few…
Rabbits in Michigan are persistent and they have good taste. They tend to go straight for the most carefully tended parts of a garden and leave the weeds completely untouched. Fencing helps but it is not always practical or attractive, and repellent sprays need constant reapplication especially after rain. Some gardeners have found a more…
Michigan gardeners love a big spring bloom. What they do not love is spending every weekend babying a shrub that still manages to underperform. Snowball viburnum is the plant that quietly fixes that problem. It shows up each spring loaded with enormous white flower clusters that stop people mid-sidewalk, and it does it without demanding…
Cucumbers grow fast in Michigan once the season gets going, but a lot of gardeners end up with less than the plants are capable of producing. The vines look healthy, the flowers show up on schedule, and then the harvest comes in smaller or shorter than expected. In most cases the fix is not complicated….
Azaleas have a strong following among Michigan gardeners, and the spring bloom is genuinely hard to argue with. The problem shows up the rest of the year. In full sun Michigan yards they struggle with the heat, the soil, and the winters in ways that require ongoing attention just to keep them looking presentable. Native…
