Michigan’s gardens are shaped by nearby lakes, cooler summers, and long winters. Short growing seasons make timing, soil care, and plant selection especially important. With cold-hardy plants and thoughtful seasonal planning, gardens and outdoor spaces remain healthy, productive, and visually appealing throughout the year.
Zinnias are one of the most rewarding flowers a Michigan gardener can grow, but a surprising number of people start them at the wrong time and wonder why results fall short. Start them too early indoors and the seedlings get leggy, rootbound, and stressed before they ever see the garden. Direct sow too late and…
A flower that blooms for one week and disappears is not carrying its weight in a Michigan garden. The season is short enough that every plant needs to earn its space, and native flowers that stay in active bloom from June through September are genuinely valuable. These are not plants that need constant deadheading, supplemental…
Arborvitae is the default privacy plant in Michigan, and deer treat it like a buffet. Gardeners who have watched a carefully planted hedge get stripped over winter know exactly how frustrating that cycle is. The good news is that Michigan has plenty of alternatives that grow dense enough to create real privacy, handle the cold…
Hydrangeas are one of the most requested plants at Michigan garden centers every spring, and every year a portion of those purchases end up disappointing. Not because hydrangeas are difficult, but because the wrong varieties get planted in a climate that exposes their weaknesses quickly. Michigan winters are hard on hydrangeas that were not bred…
The end of May in Michigan feels like a planting deadline, but it is really more of a checkpoint. There is still time to get a solid range of vegetables, flowers, and herbs in the ground before the month closes out, and several of them will establish faster now than they would have weeks earlier…
June planting in Michigan gets overlooked because most gardening energy goes into May. By the time June arrives, a lot of gardeners feel like the window has mostly closed. For certain vegetables though, June is not a late start. It is the right start. These crops genuinely perform better when soil temperatures are warmer, frost…
Every gardener has walked out to their containers after a busy stretch and found something wilted, crispy, or well past saving. It happens, and it happens more often in Michigan than in cooler states because summer heat pulls moisture out of pots fast. The solution is not a better watering schedule. It is choosing plants…
May is the right month to get containers planted in Michigan, and the choices you make now determine how those pots and planters look from June straight through to frost. The soil is warming up, nights are settling down, and most plants are ready to hit the ground running the moment they go in. Container…
Summer evenings on a Michigan patio should be one of the better parts of the season, but mosquitoes and gnats have a way of cutting those moments short faster than almost any other outdoor frustration. Sprays and citronella candles work temporarily and inconsistently, and the chemical options come with tradeoffs most people would rather avoid…
Roses that produce a flush of blooms in June and then coast through the rest of the season on sparse flowers and tired foliage are a frustratingly common sight in Michigan yards. Most gardeners assume the climate is working against them, and while Michigan does present some real challenges for roses, the bloom problem usually…
Wild blue indigo is one of those plants that asks you to be patient and rewards that patience more generously than almost anything else growing in a Michigan native garden. The first season it sits quietly and builds roots you cannot see. By the second year it starts to hint at what is coming. By…
Pest control in a Michigan garden gets complicated the moment you realize that reaching for a spray and eliminating the problem insect often takes out something beneficial at the same time. Ladybugs, ground beetles, parasitic wasps, and a long list of other garden allies are working in your favor constantly, and broad treatments that target…
Deer are beautiful, graceful, and absolutely ruthless in a Michigan garden. They will stroll through your yard like they own the place, sample your plants like a buffet, and leave before sunrise without so much as an apology. The good news is that deer are also surprisingly picky. Strong scents, bitter flavors, and coarse textures…
Every May, Michigan gardeners walk outside, look at their garden beds, and think the same thing: how did everything get so crowded so fast? One season those perennials looked full and lush. Now they are elbowing each other like shoppers on Black Friday. Here is the thing though – a crowded clump is basically a…
Healthy garden soil is not just about what you add to it. The plants growing in and around your beds have a direct effect on soil chemistry, microbial activity, and nutrient levels over time, and that influence runs in both directions. Some native Michigan plants actively improve the ground beneath them while they grow, fixing…
The first tomato flowers of the season are easy to miss. They’re small, they open quietly, and the plant doesn’t make a fuss about them. But that moment marks a real turning point, one that Michigan gardeners in particular can’t afford to ignore. The growing season here is short. There isn’t much room for lost…
Spring rain in Michigan has a way of making gardeners feel relieved. The beds get soaked, the soil darkens, and everything suddenly looks like it got exactly what it needed. It feels productive, hopeful, and very spring. Then the seedlings start looking a little off, and the mood changes fast. That is the tricky part….
Michigan has a reputation for tough growing conditions, and anyone who has gardened here for a few seasons knows it’s well earned. Late frosts, heavy clay, stretches of summer heat followed by weeks of rain, the climate keeps gardeners humble. Native plants are supposed to be the answer to all of that, and for the…
May is the month that sets the tone for everything that follows in a Michigan garden, and geraniums feel that more than most plants. Get the timing right and they reward you with months of steady, vibrant color straight through until frost. Miss the window and you spend the rest of the season trying to…
Tulips are one of the great disappointments of Michigan gardening, and most people don’t find out why until after the first season. You plant a bag of bulbs in the fall, get a beautiful show in spring, and then spend the next year waiting for a repeat performance that never quite arrives. Some varieties come…
Growing tomatoes in pots sounds straightforward until you’re halfway through summer and the plants are telling you otherwise. Container gardening has real advantages, especially in Michigan where the season is short and the weather makes in-ground planting a gamble some years. But pots change the rules in ways that catch a lot of gardeners off…
ZZ plants have built a reputation as nearly impossible to fail with, and that reputation is mostly deserved. They handle low light, irregular watering, and general neglect with a composure that few houseplants can match. But there is a difference between a ZZ plant that survives in a Michigan home and one that actually grows…
A Michigan garden can create a surprising amount of leftovers. One minute you are trimming plants, peeling vegetables, and cleaning up flower beds, and the next you have a bucket of scraps and a growing pile of yard waste staring back at you. That is where composting starts to look pretty brilliant. Instead of treating…
Wild hyacinth is one of Michigan’s most quietly impressive native bulbs, sending up slender stems lined with pale blue flowers each spring before most of the garden has fully woken up. It blooms reliably, supports early pollinators at a time when food sources are still limited, and fits naturally into woodland edges, meadow plantings, and…
Zebra haworthia is one of those houseplants that looks like it should be high maintenance but turns out to be one of the more forgiving options you can keep on a windowsill. That small, striking rosette with its bold white stripes handles neglect better than most succulents and fits comfortably in the kind of indoor…
Michigan winters are long, dark, and hard on the motivation to keep anything green alive indoors. Low light levels for months at a stretch, dry air from heating systems running constantly, and temperature swings near drafty windows create conditions that expose every weakness in a houseplant fast. Then spring arrives and brings its own challenges,…
A perennial that blooms for two weeks and disappears is not carrying its weight in a Michigan garden. The season is short enough that every plant in the ground needs to earn its space, and the ones that do it best are the varieties that stay in active bloom for weeks on end without constant…
Hanging baskets are not just for petunias and trailing flowers. A growing number of Michigan gardeners are discovering that certain fruits and vegetables perform surprisingly well when grown off the ground, and the results are both practical and visually interesting. Vertical growing in baskets solves real problems in smaller yards, keeping edible plants accessible, improving…
Most ground covers need a season or two to fill in and show what they can do. The best native Michigan varieties need even less encouragement than that once they feel at home in the right spot. There is one in particular that operates on a quietly impressive timeline, coming back each year slightly fuller,…
Not every gardener has hours to spend maintaining perfect beds, and not every plant requires that kind of attention to look good. Some of the most reliable performers in Michigan gardens are the ones that get planted, get established, and then largely take care of themselves season after season. These are not dull plants filling…
Shady spots in a Michigan garden can feel like a design problem that never quite gets solved. Most flowering plants want full sun, and the ones marketed as shade tolerant often mean they survive in low light rather than actually thrive and bloom there. Wild columbine operates differently. This Michigan native produces its distinctive red…
Most gardeners plan their vegetable beds by spacing and sunlight without giving much thought to which plants end up growing next to each other. That approach works well enough, but it leaves real productivity on the table. Certain vegetable combinations actively support each other in ways that show up in how well each plant grows,…
Michigan springs are wet, and some years they stay that way well into June. For certain flowers that reliable moisture is practically ideal, fueling strong root development and producing blooms that look better than they ever would in a dry season. For others, the same rainy weeks are genuinely damaging, creating waterlogged soil conditions that…
Michigan has no shortage of beautiful native wildflowers, but Partridge Pea has a way of stealing the show in a hurry. This sunny little annual does not waste time. It sprouts, grows, blooms, and sets seed all in one season, which is pretty impressive for a plant that looks so relaxed about the whole thing….
Peace lilies are one of the few houseplants that bloom reliably indoors, and in a Michigan home where natural light gets scarce for months at a stretch, that flowering cycle is something worth protecting. Feeding plays a bigger role in keeping it going than most plant owners realize, and getting it wrong is one of…
Spiders showing up near doorways, ants finding their way into the kitchen, and flies hovering around windows are familiar summer frustrations for Michigan homeowners. Chemical sprays handle the problem temporarily but require repeated applications and come with tradeoffs most people would rather avoid near kids, pets, and vegetable gardens. Certain plants offer a more permanent…
Dill is one of those herbs that seems simple to grow until you try starting it indoors and transplanting it outside. The results tend to be underwhelming at best, and the plants that survive the move often sit there looking stressed for weeks before they recover enough to grow with any real purpose. Direct sowing…
Vertical growing changes the math on a small Michigan garden in a way that few other strategies can. Training vegetables upward instead of letting them spread across the ground reclaims space, improves airflow through the canopy, and in a state where the growing season has a firm deadline, the efficiency that comes with a well…
Division is one of the most useful skills in a Michigan gardener’s toolkit, and late spring is prime time to act on it for many popular perennials. The plants that benefit from being divided before May closes out use the remaining warm weeks to push new roots and settle in before summer heat arrives, coming…
Cucumbers are productive, fast growing, and satisfying to harvest, but they are also particular about company. Most Michigan gardeners focus on what to plant near cucumbers to help them thrive without stopping to think about which neighbors quietly work against them. Companion planting gets a lot of attention for its benefits, but the other side…
Rhubarb is one of Michigan’s most reliable perennial crops, coming back stronger each spring and producing those tart red stalks that signal the growing season has finally arrived. Most gardeners know the basics of harvesting it, but fewer have heard the old rule about avoiding months with an “R” in their name, and fewer still…
Caladiums bring a kind of tropical drama to a garden that most flowering plants simply cannot compete with. The leaves are the whole show, and big leaf varieties take that visual impact to another level with bold patterns, vivid color combinations, and a presence that fills a shaded bed or container in a way that…
African violets know how to brighten a Michigan home. Their velvety leaves and colorful blooms can make a windowsill, shelf, or small table feel instantly more cheerful, especially when winter outside looks cold and gray. For a compact plant, they bring a lot of charm. They can be a little particular, though. Dry indoor heat,…
May in Michigan makes tomato season feel irresistible. The days warm up, garden centers fill with seedlings, and suddenly it seems like planting time has officially arrived. That is usually when trouble starts. Tomatoes raised indoors are not ready for full sun, spring wind, and chilly Michigan nights the moment they hit the garden. Move…
Some wildflowers announce themselves loudly and hold their display for weeks. Others arrive quietly, peak brilliantly, and disappear before most people realize what they missed. Michigan has one native wildflower that operates almost entirely in that second category, timing its entire above ground presence around a narrow spring window and then vanishing as completely as…
Lavender has a reputation for being low maintenance, and in the right conditions that reputation holds up. What trips up a lot of Michigan gardeners is assuming low maintenance means no maintenance, especially when it comes to feeding. Fertilizing lavender on the wrong schedule or with the wrong product can push the plant toward lush…
Clematis has a funny way of making gardeners second-guess themselves. One day it looks like a bundle of sleepy stems, and the next it is full of fresh growth and big spring promise. That is usually the moment Michigan gardeners start circling the vine with pruners in hand, trying to look confident. Fair enough. Clematis…
Spring moves fast in Michigan, and the window for propagating hydrangeas is one of those seasonal opportunities that closes before most gardeners realize it opened. Getting new hydrangea plants from cuttings taken at the right moment is genuinely straightforward, but timing matters more than most propagation guides make clear. Too early in spring and the…
Wet spots in a Michigan yard are some of the hardest areas to plant successfully. Most shrubs that look promising at the nursery struggle once their roots sit in standing water for any length of time, and the cycle of planting, watching something decline, and starting over gets old fast. What most gardeners do not…
Buying new plants every season adds up, and once you realize how many common garden varieties can be propagated at home with basic materials, it changes how you think about stocking a Michigan garden. Rooting cuttings is one of the most satisfying and cost effective skills a gardener can develop, and the barrier to entry…
Most Michigan homeowners assume the trees in their yard are entirely their business. That assumption is mostly correct, but there are situations where removing a tree without the right approval can result in fines that catch people completely off guard. Local ordinances protecting certain trees exist across municipalities throughout the state, and they apply more…
A lawn full of bumps, dips, and uneven patches is more than just an eyesore. It creates tripping hazards, makes mowing frustrating, and often signals underlying drainage or soil issues that get worse if they are not addressed. The good news is that fixing an uneven Michigan lawn does not require renting equipment or hiring…
Eastern bluebirds are one of the most sought after visitors in Michigan yards, and most gardeners trying to attract them focus entirely on nest boxes while overlooking the plants that make a yard genuinely worth visiting in the first place. Nest boxes help, but bluebirds need more than a place to raise young. They need…
Prairie smoke is the kind of plant that makes you look twice because it never quite behaves the way you expect a wildflower to behave. In May, when the rest of the garden is pushing out fresh growth in every direction, prairie smoke sits low and slightly rough looking, its leaves hugging the ground in…
Lantana is one of those plants that can either be a summer standout or a quiet disappointment depending on how it is managed, and Michigan gardeners have a slightly different set of conditions to work with than growers in warmer states where lantana behaves almost automatically. The growing season here is shorter, which means you…
May has a way of making Michigan gardeners feel wildly optimistic, and honestly, that energy is hard to resist. Everything is waking up, herbs are pushing fresh new growth, and the garden suddenly starts looking full of possibility. Lavender is part of that excitement, but it also likes to keep gardeners humble. It smells amazing,…
Michigan patios, porches, and balconies can do so much more than host a few tired annuals by midsummer. If you want containers with a little more staying power, hardy perennials are where things start getting interesting. They bring texture, color, and personality to pots in a way that feels a lot richer, and honestly, some…
