Ohio gardeners are pulling the same weed out of their beds, their lawns, their driveways, and their fence lines this year, and it keeps coming back faster than ever. This is not your average nuisance weed that shows up seasonally and stays manageable with a little attention. This one spreads aggressively, roots deeply, and produces…
Florida summers have a reputation, and honestly they have earned it. Blazing sun, sticky humidity, warm nights that never really cool down, and afternoon storms that show up like clockwork. Most flowers take one look at those conditions and quietly give up by July. But vinca? Vinca thrives on it. Also known as periwinkle or…
June is slipping away fast. That window matters more than most Florida gardeners realize. Once summer heat locks in hard, the ground turns brutal and perennials shift into pure survival mode. Dividing at the wrong time is not just a wasted afternoon. It can set a plant back an entire season, sometimes longer. But dividing…
Crepe myrtles can make the top of a Florida yard look beautiful, then leave the ground underneath looking like an afterthought. That bare patch around the trunk? It is not just ugly, it is tricky. The soil can dry out fast, the roots do not love being bothered, and the light shifts from bright to…
Gardenias are worth the effort. That’s the first thing Florida gardeners who actually get them blooming through August will tell you. The fragrance alone justifies a spot in any yard. A gardenia that stays in peak condition through summer earns a kind of loyalty that low-maintenance plants rarely do. Getting there is where most people…
Pruning a leggy shrub in spring feels like a calculated risk, and in Florida, the margin for error is pretty slim. Go in too early or cut too hard and those flower buds that formed on last season’s wood are gone, taking your spring color display with them. It is one of the most common…
Walk through an older Ohio neighborhood and something still feels familiar right away. Front yards carry a quiet sense of history, where simple details once shaped daily life and long summer evenings stretched without hurry. Backyards served as gathering spaces filled with conversation, shared meals, and routines that returned year after year. Traditions passed easily…
Pachysandra has had a really good run. Decades of covering shady yards, staying green through winter, and handling that stubborn dry shade under big trees without complaint. Honestly, respect. But gardening tastes are shifting, and a lot of homeowners are starting to ask a pretty fair question: what if that shady patch under the maple…
There is a reason bougainvillea shows up on fences, trellises, patios, and containers all across Florida every summer. When this plant is happy, it puts on a color display that is genuinely hard to beat. Vivid magenta, fiery orange, classic red, crisp white, bougainvillea commits to the moment in a way that makes a landscape…
Nothing takes the excitement out of a brand new garden bed quite like watching weeds move in before your actual plants do. And in Ohio, they will absolutely try. Warm spells, spring rain, and freshly worked soil are basically a welcome mat for every weed seed that has been sitting in the ground just waiting…
New growth on a hydrangea is easy to overlook. A few small leaves pushing out from the base or along last year’s stems, nothing dramatic, nothing that seems to require immediate attention. Most Ohio gardeners note it and move on. That’s the moment worth pausing on. What happens in the first few weeks after hydrangeas…
Finding flowering plants that can genuinely keep up with Florida’s heat, humidity, and completely unpredictable weather is a real challenge, and any gardener who has lost a pretty plant to a brutal August afternoon knows exactly what that feels like. Salvias, though? They show up and they deliver. Tall flower spikes, rich jewel-toned colors, and…
Podocarpus became Florida’s go-to privacy tree almost by accident. Easy to find, easy to shear into a tight hedge, and fast enough to satisfy homeowners who don’t want to wait years for a screen. That convenience built a loyal following. It also built a lot of yards that look identical and depend on a non-native…
May hits Florida citrus trees at a vulnerable moment. The flush of new spring growth is settling in, and temperatures are climbing fast. The tree is working hard to keep up with demands that shift almost weekly at this point in the season. Yellow leaves showing up in the middle of all that activity tend…
Hostas are the gold standard for shade gardens almost everywhere in the country, just not here. Florida summers are not negotiable on that point, and hostas know it. The humidity, the heat that never lets up at night, and soil conditions that bear no resemblance to cool woodland floors add up to a frustrating experience….
Crotons are not exactly shy about their preferences. They love warmth, they love humidity, and they absolutely love showing off those bold, multicolored leaves in a landscape that actually suits them. The good news is that if you garden in South or Central Florida, you are basically living in their dream home. But even in…
Hydrangeas have a reputation in Florida, and not a great one. Most gardeners have tried them, watched them struggle through the first real heat wave, and quietly pulled them out by August. The conventional wisdom says the heat and humidity just aren’t built for hydrangeas, and for a long time, that felt true. But that…
Clematis is great. Nobody is here to argue that. Those big, showy blooms climbing up a trellis are genuinely hard to beat, and plenty of gardeners have built their whole fence line around them. But lately, more and more gardeners have been asking a pretty interesting question: what if there’s something even better suited to…
Most people put up a privacy hedge and call it a day. It blocks the neighbors, it fills the space, and that’s pretty much where the thinking stops. But here’s the thing about Ohio’s climate: it’s almost tailor-made for shrubs that work harder than that. Food-producing hedges have been a staple of smart homesteaders and…
If Florida plants had a fashion show, crotons would absolutely win best dressed. These bold, multicolored showstoppers bring shades of red, orange, yellow, and green to patios, entryways, poolside beds, and container gardens across South and Central Florida, and they do it without even trying. Florida’s warm, humid climate suits them beautifully, and a well-placed…
Salvia starts the season like it has something to prove. Bold color, steady blooms, and enough heat tolerance to make other plants look fragile by comparison. Then somewhere in the middle of a Florida summer the performance quietly fades. The blooms thin out, the plant looks like it has said everything it wanted to say,…
Some patios just feel different. The air sits a little sweeter, evenings linger longer, and without quite knowing why, people find themselves staying outside later than they planned. That quality rarely comes from furniture or lighting. It comes from what is growing at the edges. Ohio summers have a generosity to them, warm enough to…
Nobody warns you about the hunger. Geraniums growing in sandy, fast-draining soil are in a constant race against nutrient loss, and most of the time the soil wins before the blooms ever hit their peak. That is the quiet reason so many Florida patio containers and garden borders look halfway there, plenty of green, not…
Shallow soil stops most Florida gardeners cold. Dig six inches down in the wrong spot and you hit rock, sand, or hardpan that roots cannot push through. Plants stall, sit there looking sorry for a season, and eventually you pull them out and try something else. Rinse and repeat until that patch of yard just…
Crape myrtles are one of the most recognizable trees in Florida landscapes, and they are also commonly mistreated. Drive through almost any Florida neighborhood in late winter and the evidence is everywhere. Thick trunks topped with blunt, stubby cuts, knobby fists of regrowth where graceful branching structure used to be, trees that look more like…
Zinnias are the kind of flowers that make a garden feel generous. Cut a few for a vase, and more blooms keep coming. Let them stand in the sun, and butterflies show up like they got an invitation. In Florida, that easy charm is exactly why gardeners keep planting them. The catch? “Zinnia” covers more…
Shade gets a bad reputation in Ohio gardens. Homeowners stare at those dim patches under maples, along north-facing fences, and beneath towering oaks like they are unsolvable problems. Grass gave up. Mulch looks tired. And bare dirt is never the answer. But what if that shady corner is not a lost cause? It is an…
Florida gardeners are always hunting for ways to stretch a dollar in the garden, and wood ash gets thrown around as some kind of miracle fix. Sprinkle it here, dump it there, and watch your plants take off. Sounds simple enough, but that kind of thinking gets a lot of Florida gardens into serious trouble…
Small gardens deserve big rewards, and fragrance is one of the fastest ways to transform an ordinary yard into something that stops people mid-step. The challenge in Ohio is finding flowers that deliver genuine scent without taking over a compact space. Some fragrant varieties spread aggressively. Others grow too tall, block sunlight, and crowd out…
May in Florida is basically garden mood-swing season. One day the soil feels dry enough to crunch, and the next, humidity rolls in like it paid rent. Native plants can handle a lot, but they do not all want the same kind of attention right now. Firebush might appreciate a gentle tidy-up, scarlet sage may…
A pool is supposed to be the centerpiece of a backyard, not a source of constant maintenance headaches. But put the wrong plants anywhere near it and that’s exactly what it becomes. Cracked decking from roots that had no business growing that direction, skimmer baskets packed with debris every other day, and filtration systems working…
Rainy season in Florida does not knock, it just shows up and immediately exposes every mistake you made in your beds. Mulch that looked perfectly fine in April becomes a soggy, suffocating mess by June, and the roots sitting underneath it pay the price. Most homeowners treat mulching like a once a year chore, pile…
May is the month that makes or breaks a Sunshine Mimosa planting, and most gardeners don’t realize it until the damage is already done. This ground cover has a well-earned reputation for spreading beautifully across Florida landscapes, that low, lush, pink-flowered carpet look that seems to take care of itself. And it can, but not…
May in Florida is when flower beds start acting like they drank an extra iced coffee. The sun hangs around longer, the heat turns up, and suddenly those neat little plants are stretching, leaning, and reaching for attention. Cute? Sometimes. Messy? Very. Before summer rain and sticky humidity move in, light tip pruning can help…
Gardenias have a reputation for being dramatic, and Florida summers give them plenty to be dramatic about. One week the leaves are a deep, glossy green and everything looks exactly right. Then the heat settles in for real, and almost overnight the yellowing starts. A leaf here, a branch there, and suddenly a shrub that…
No Mow May sounds great on paper. You let the lawn grow, give early pollinators a little help, and enjoy a short break from mowing. Pretty tempting. But once Ohio yards start growing fast in mid-May, another question usually pops up. What about ticks? That is where things get more complicated. Tall grass gets most…
Spot a praying mantis in your garden and you might think it wandered in by chance. It didn’t. That slow, deliberate creature perched on your tomato cage or rose stem made a very calculated decision to set up camp right there, and the reason says a lot more about your garden’s health than you might…
May is the month when a Florida yard starts waving its little green arms and asking for attention. The sun feels stronger, the soil is warm, and summer rain is waiting just offstage like it has a grand entrance planned. This second weekend of May is a great time to handle a few smart yard…
Florida has a short window for planting and most homeowners consistently miss it. The heat comes fast here, no warning, no grace period, just one week of decent temperatures followed by months of brutal sun that will stress out anything that has not had time to settle its roots. Smart Florida gardeners know the clock…
May is when Ohio gardens start waking up in a big way, and honestly, it is hard not to get excited. Beds that looked a little sleepy in April can suddenly turn into blank canvases just begging for color. One week the yard feels thin and patchy, and the next you are eyeing every flat…
Ohio weather plays by nobody’s rules. One week feels like spring has finally committed, the next dumps sleet on your freshly mulched beds and laughs about it. Most plants take that personally. Bulbs? They couldn’t care less. That’s the quiet genius of planting bulbs in Ohio, they made a deal with the cold a long…
Florida’s May heat does not tap politely on the garden gate. It barges in wearing sunglasses, cranks up the humidity, and asks your flowers what they are made of. Stronger sun, warm soil, sandy beds, and steamy afternoons can make some blooms look tired before summer even gets comfortable. The fun part? Certain plants seem…
Nobody talks enough about Florida’s native wildflowers, and that’s a serious gap in the conversation. Annuals get all the glory, the end caps at every garden center, the “buy two get one” deals, the Pinterest boards. But here’s the truth: most annuals are high-maintenance guests that overstay their welcome and underdeliver by midsummer. Native wildflowers?…
No Mow May has picked up a lot of momentum in Ohio over the last few years. The idea is simple, put the mower away for a month, let things grow, and give early pollinators a fighting chance before summer kicks in. Hard to argue with the intention behind it. But somewhere between the concept…
May can make a Florida yard look like it changed overnight. One week, shrubs look neat. The next, vines crawl past trellises, hibiscus shoots race toward the roofline, and storm season waits around the corner. A quick cut can help, but the wrong cut can erase an entire flower show before it starts. That is…
Florida gardening can humble anyone fast. One day plants look perfect, the next they’re scorched, soaked, or struggling for no clear reason. The problem isn’t your skill. It’s the ground. Sandy soil drains too quickly, summer rain floods roots, and intense heat pushes plants past their limits. Now flip the script. A simple pot gives…
May in Ohio is a total emotional rollercoaster for gardeners. One afternoon you are soaking up the sun, and the next, you are wondering if you should apologize to your tulips for the sudden chill. Even though the heavy lifting of winter is over, your garden beds might still look a bit awkward and naked….
Container tomatoes have a reputation for being a compromise. A consolation prize for gardeners without enough yard space, something that technically works but never quite delivers what a proper garden bed would. A lot of Florida gardeners go in with low expectations and end up pleasantly surprised. Florida’s growing conditions are a different story than…
May is when Florida firebush starts acting like it knows the hummingbirds are watching. The days stretch longer, the air warms fast, and those bright tubular flowers begin to glow like tiny garden traffic signals. Hummingbirds notice. Oh, they notice. Before Florida’s summer heat fully cranks up, this is a smart time to give your…
Most gardeners treat container plants like a seasonal transaction. Buy them in spring, enjoy them for a few months, toss them in fall, repeat. It gets expensive fast, and after a few years it starts to feel like a lot of effort for something that never really builds on itself. Ohio has a legitimate case…
Black-eyed Susans are the ultimate high school sweethearts of the Ohio garden world. They show up that first year looking absolutely radiant with those sunny yellow petals, making your backyard look like a professional landscaping magazine cover. You probably spent all winter dreaming about that second-year glow-up, only to find a few scraggly stems or…
A hummingbird can cross your yard in a blink and decide just as fast that there is nothing worth stopping for. That tiny flash of green and red you see in May is usually a ruby-throated hummingbird, the only hummingbird that regularly nests in Ohio. After the long trip back north, it is searching for…
Florida gardeners have a secret they learned the hard way: impatiens are a trap. Every spring, garden centers stack them high, they look gorgeous in the pot, and six weeks into summer they turn into a soggy, wilted mess. The heat wins every time. The good news is that Florida’s brutal summers are no match…
Planting cucumbers in April can feel like peak Florida gardening energy. The sun is warming up, the garden is calling, and those seed packets start looking very convincing. It seems like the season is finally in full swing, so why not get cucumbers going right now? Well, Florida likes to keep things interesting. A spring…
Nothing takes the wind out of your sails faster than buying a lawn product, heading home ready to clean up the yard, and finding out it may not even be allowed in your area. That is the reality for some Florida homeowners. Lawn rules in this state are not always cut and dried, and in…
Ever step outside on a Florida evening and feel like you rang the dinner bell? One minute the yard feels calm, the next you are swatting at your legs and wondering how mosquitoes showed up so fast. It can turn a simple walk across the grass or a few minutes on the patio into something…
Crape myrtles are one of those plants that either shine for months or fizzle out way too fast. You’ve probably seen both. One yard is packed with color all summer, while another looks done before July even hits. So what’s the trick? It usually comes down to picking the right variety from the start. Florida’s…
