River birch is one of the most important host trees for luna moth caterpillars in Michigan, since this striking green moth’s northern populations rely heavily on birch leaves to feed and grow. Female luna moths lay their eggs directly on the leaves, and the caterpillars spend weeks feasting there before dropping to the ground to…

Several popular landscaping shrubs are on their way to becoming illegal to sell or plant in Michigan. The state has moved to restrict species like common buckthorn, glossy buckthorn, and Japanese barberry due to the ecological harm they cause, with these new rules set to take effect starting in 2028. These shrubs may look attractive…

Owls tend to go quiet through much of the summer, so when their calls suddenly return on fall nights in Michigan, it’s easy to wonder what’s changed. This seasonal uptick isn’t random. As young owls leave their parents’ territory to find their own space, established adults become more vocal in reasserting control over their hunting…

Autumn brings a steady supply of fallen leaves, and many Michigan gardeners are learning that raking them into the trash isn’t the best use of this seasonal resource. Adding leaves directly to garden soil sets off a natural breakdown process that can meaningfully improve soil health over time. As leaves decompose, they add organic matter…

September is a turning point for asparagus beds in Michigan, even though it doesn’t look like much is happening above ground. As the ferny foliage starts to slow down, the plant shifts its energy toward the root system, building up reserves that will directly determine how strong next year’s spears come in. This makes fall…

As temperatures drop in Michigan, mice begin looking for warmer places to spend the colder months, and sheds and garden areas often become an easy target. These spots offer shelter from the wind along with nearby sources of food, especially if leftover produce, seeds, or garden debris are still around. This shift usually starts earlier…

Coneflowers have a reputation as one of the toughest, most forgiving perennials a Michigan gardener can plant, which makes it all the more frustrating when one still refuses to thrive. Something clearly isn’t adding up. The plant itself usually isn’t the problem. More often than not, the spot it landed in was working against it…

Hostas that looked lush and full all summer start sending a quiet signal once September rolls around, leaves losing their shine, edges starting to yellow at the tips. It’s easy to mistake this for a problem. In reality, the plant is simply following its own internal clock, winding down exactly on schedule as it prepares…

Spotting a possum ambling across your Michigan yard can catch you off guard, especially if it happens at an odd hour or somewhere you weren’t expecting. These animals aren’t exactly rare, but most people don’t know much about why one might suddenly decide your yard is worth exploring. It’s easy to assume the worst or…

Tomato plants loaded with fruit that stubbornly refuses to ripen leave plenty of Michigan gardeners confused, especially well into August when harvest should already be picking up. Most people assume something is simply wrong with the plant or the variety they chose to grow this year. But there are actually several different explanations behind this…

Monarch butterflies rely on a very specific window of available nectar as they make their long journey south each fall, and most Michigan gardens run out of options well before that migration actually finishes. Most people assume their garden’s usefulness to monarchs ends once typical summer blooms fade away in early fall. But one native…

Burning bush has long been a popular choice for fall color, but Michigan gardeners are increasingly steering away from it as fall planting season approaches. A quieter, more resilient native shrub has been gaining attention instead, offering its own seasonal appeal without the drawbacks burning bush tends to bring along with it. This shift isn’t…

Roses seem like they could use extra encouragement heading into fall, yet plenty of experienced Michigan gardeners deliberately stop fertilizing right around this time every year. It feels counterintuitive at first, especially with roses still actively blooming and looking perfectly healthy. But there’s a clear, practical reason behind this timing, one that has everything to…

September bell peppers often get picked at exactly the wrong moment, leaving Michigan gardeners with fruit that never quite reaches its full potential in flavor or size. Container plants dry out far faster than garden beds during a Michigan heat wave, making watering timing more critical than most gardeners realize. Many people water whenever it’s convenient, assuming any time of day works just as well as another during extreme heat. But there’s a specific window that actually helps plants handle the stress…

There’s a particular kind of silence that settles over Michigan yards in late August, one that catches many homeowners off guard after a summer full of constant activity. Michigan grape growers who wait for visible damage before checking are often already dealing with a problem that has been building for weeks. There’s a specific reason this pest targets vines so…

Most vegetable planting advice revolves around yearly replanting, leaving gardeners locked into the same repetitive cycle every single season. But a handful of vegetables actually skip that cycle entirely, coming back reliably year after year once established in the right spot. The catch is that these particular plants need to go into the ground now,…

Busy summer schedules rarely leave much room for long gardening sessions, yet even fifteen minutes can make a real difference if you focus on the right tasks. Black knot appears as dark, rough swellings along branches, often resembling burnt or charred growths on Michigan cherry and plum trees. Checking trees now, before winter pruning season arrives, helps identify exactly which branches…

Wild geranium rewards Michigan gardeners with early spring blooms while asking for remarkably little in terms of ongoing care or maintenance. This native perennial produces delicate pink or purple flowers just as many other plants are still waking up from winter dormancy. Its ability to thrive in both sun and partial shade makes it an…

Walking through muddy garden beds after heavy rain causes more lasting damage to Michigan soil than most people realize in the moment. Foot traffic compacts wet soil significantly, squeezing out the air pockets roots depend on for healthy growth. This compaction can persist long after the soil dries, making it harder for water and nutrients…

Watering a lawn immediately after heavy rain is a common mistake many Michigan homeowners make without realizing the potential harm involved. Soil that’s already saturated from rainfall has little room left to absorb additional water, leading to standing puddles and oxygen deprived roots. This oversaturation can suffocate grass roots, creating conditions similar to drought stress…

Cluster flies appearing inside Michigan homes in August are actually searching ahead for a safe, sheltered spot to spend the coming winter months. These insects lay eggs in soil during summer, with larvae feeding on earthworms before adults emerge and begin seeking shelter well before cold weather actually arrives. Heavy yard work should wait until current unstable weather conditions pass, especially with Michigan experiencing this mix of intense heat and storm activity. Working in extreme heat increases the risk of exhaustion, making tasks like digging, heavy pruning, or extensive planting particularly risky right now. Saturated soil from recent storms also becomes easily compacted under…

Vinegar has become a popular natural option for yard maintenance, with many Michigan homeowners using it as a simple, chemical free weed control method. According to lawn care professionals, the acetic acid in vinegar works by drawing moisture out of plant leaves, causing weeds to wither fairly quickly after application. This approach tends to work…

Portulaca deserves far more attention as a patio plant, especially considering how effortlessly it handles Michigan’s most intense August heat waves. This low growing succulent thrives in full sun conditions that leave many other container plants wilted and struggling by midday. Its thick, water storing leaves allow portulaca to tolerate infrequent watering without sacrificing the…

Raised beds offer a significant drainage advantage over traditional ground soil, especially when Michigan issues a flood watch during heavy rain events. Elevated soil allows excess water to drain downward and outward more efficiently, rather than pooling around plant roots. Ground level gardens, particularly those with heavier clay soil, often struggle to move water away…

Bringing firewood home from a camping trip feels harmless, but this common habit poses a serious risk to Michigan’s forests. Invasive insects like emerald ash borer and various wood boring beetles often hide undetected inside bark and logs.
