FLORIDA

A cardinal in a Florida yard stops you the same way it does anywhere else in the country. That red is almost unreasonably vivid against green foliage, and the bird carries itself with a confidence that makes it hard to look away. Florida residents who grew up further north often say the cardinal was the…

Nobody warns you about the wall of heat that hits a Florida garden in June. One week your tomatoes look promising, and the next week everything seems to be melting into the mulch. First-time Florida gardeners often move here from cooler states expecting gardening to follow the same rules they have always known. The truth…

Your yard edges are doing something you probably did not plan for. That narrow strip where lawn meets fence, garden bed, or tree line is exactly the habitat ticks prefer most. The overgrown, shady, damp conditions that develop along neglected borders create ideal questing territory for ticks waiting for a host to brush past. Many…

Summer heat and Florida hibiscus have a complicated relationship, and intense stretches of blazing sun have a way of making that very obvious very fast. Drooping leaves, buds dropping before they open, and a plant that looks completely defeated overnight, it is a familiar scene for a lot of Florida hibiscus growers once the heat…

Mulch is the default answer for bare Florida ground, and it does a job. It suppresses weeds, holds some moisture, and gives beds a finished look. Then the next rain washes it into the lawn or the next wind scatters it across the driveway. Then you buy more and start over. Native ground covers solve…

Carpenter bees hovering around a Florida porch have a way of making homeowners nervous fast. That loud, low buzz, the purposeful circling, the occasional dive that feels more aggressive than it probably is. Most people’s first response is to find something to spray and figure out the rest later. Before reaching for anything, it is…

Lizards are one of Florida’s most underappreciated yard allies. They move fast, they hunt constantly, and they have a particular appetite for the insects that make summer outdoor living uncomfortable. A yard that attracts lizards in real numbers is a yard running a natural pest control operation around the clock. Most Florida homeowners either ignore…

Fresh new growth on a Florida plant should feel like a win. Those bright new leaves push out and for a moment everything looks genuinely promising. Then, almost overnight, the new growth starts twisting, spotting, paling, or just looking completely wrong. Something hit it fast, and the timing is not a coincidence. Florida’s climate, soil,…

Gardenias are not forgiving plants on a good day. They have strong opinions about soil, water, and light. Florida summers test every one of those preferences at once. A heat stretch that pushes past what a gardenia can handle shows up fast. Yellow leaves, brown blooms, a plant that was fragrant and full two weeks…

A Florida heat wave does not care how diligently you have been watering. Intense afternoon sun, sandy soil that loses moisture fast, and temperatures that stay uncomfortably high well into the evening can push garden plants past their limits even when they were doing fine just weeks earlier. Wilting leaves, soil pulling away from container…

Florida HOAs have a complicated relationship with anything that does not look like traditional turf. One native plant has been caught in that crossfire longer than almost any other. It grows low, spreads steadily, handles heat and drought without drama, and supports pollinators in ways that a standard lawn never could. HOAs flag it. Residents…

Some Florida yards pull in painted buntings. Others light up with fireflies after dark. The yards that manage both at once are doing something most homeowners never planned for deliberately. The overlap between what those two creatures need is more significant than most people realize. Painted buntings want dense native cover, specific food sources, and…

Armadillos do not wander Florida yards randomly. They follow a reliable logic night after night. The yards that get hit hardest are the ones with one specific feature that armadillos find almost impossible to pass up. Most Florida homeowners focus on the damage after the fact. Overturned soil, scattered mulch, holes that appear overnight like…

There is a very specific Florida gardening experience that happens every year without fail. June looks promising, the garden is full and colorful, and everything seems to be heading into summer on a strong note. Then August arrives and the mood shifts completely. Plants that looked healthy and stable just weeks ago are suddenly drooping,…

Florida has no shortage of garden centers, but most of them are working from the same short list of tropical plants that move reliably off the shelf. Safe choices, familiar names, nothing that requires explanation. For gardeners who have outgrown that rotation, a different kind of nursery exists. Florida’s best tropical plant nurseries operate at…

Bougainvillea is one of Florida’s most dramatic plants when it is performing. That explosion of color against a fence or wall turns heads every time. Then a serious heat stretch moves through and everything changes. Leaves drop, tips brown, and the plant that looked unstoppable puts on a very different kind of display. The frustrating…

Hawks are working Florida yards every single day and most homeowners never think about what draws them in or what they are actually doing while they are there. A hawk that has claimed a yard as regular hunting territory is one of the more effective forms of natural pest pressure a Florida property can have….

Florida yards can look busy and still feel strangely quiet. The lawn is neat. The porch is swept. The bird feeder has snacks. Yet that bright red flash everyone hopes for may treat the whole place like a drive-through with bad service. Cardinals are not hard to love, but they can be picky about a…

A north-facing entry path in Florida presents a specific challenge. No direct sun, lower light than almost anywhere else on the property, and soil that stays cooler and damper than most Florida plants prefer. The default response is to mulch it heavily, plant something that merely survives, and accept that this spot will never be…

Barn owls are one of the most effective natural pest controllers a Florida yard can attract. Silent, precise, and active through the night hours when moles are most vulnerable above ground. A resident barn owl does not eliminate a mole problem, but it adds a layer of consistent pressure that no trap or repellent replicates…

Walk through any Florida garden center in summer and it is hard to miss. A plant labeled “Citronella” or “Mosquito Plant” sitting near the checkout, positioned like a solution. Florida homeowners grab it every season hoping for a natural fix to backyard mosquitoes. The results rarely match the expectation. The confusion starts with the name….

Florida hibiscus can be one of the most rewarding plants in the yard or one of the most frustrating. The difference almost always comes down to how they get pruned. A few wrong cuts and you end up with a tall, leggy plant that puts out one flower every few weeks and mostly just takes…

Desert rose is supposed to love heat. That reputation is mostly earned, but Florida summers have a way of pushing even the most heat-tolerant plants past a comfortable threshold. Scorched leaves, wilting that does not bounce back overnight, a plant that looked bold and tropical two months ago now asking for help in every way…

Florida hurricane season has a way of reminding everyone that outdoor spaces need a plan, and usually that reminder comes faster than anyone would like. One day the storm is a distant blip on the radar and the next day it is time to start moving everything inside. Patio pots, hanging baskets, balcony planters, and…

Finding native Florida plants locally can feel like a full time project. Not every county has a nursery that stocks them seriously. The ones that do are not always close, open, or carrying what a specific yard actually needs at the right moment in the season. Online nurseries have changed that math in a real…

Hydrangeas in Florida are already working against the odds. They want cooler temperatures, consistent moisture, and protection from the kind of afternoon sun that Florida delivers without apology. Push through a brutal stretch of summer heat and a hydrangea that was hanging on starts showing exactly how much stress it has been carrying. Scorched leaves,…

Mulch is supposed to be one of the easier decisions in a Florida garden. Pick something, lay it down, move on. Most homeowners never consider that what they spread across their beds could be quietly making a rat problem significantly worse. Rats are not just looking for food. They need cover, nesting material, and the…

Bird of paradise plants look dramatic when they are thriving and equally dramatic when Florida summer heat has had its way with them. Scorched leaves, brown edges, a plant that was turning heads two months ago now looking like it needs serious help. The good news is that bird of paradise is tougher than it…

Yellow fronds on a Florida palm are not a random event. Each yellow frond is sending a specific message about what is happening inside the tree. The location of the yellowing, which fronds are affected, where on those fronds the color appears, and whether the top or the bottom of the canopy is involved all…

The instinct after heat damage is to grab the pruners and cut. Get rid of what looks bad, clean up the mess, give the plant a fresh start. It is a reasonable instinct and in Florida summers it is almost always the wrong move made too soon. Timing matters more than most Florida gardeners realize…

Every Florida gardener hits a point in summer where the garden starts looking like it has had enough. Plants that were doing well just weeks ago are wilting in the afternoon heat, dropping leaves, or simply looking completely worn out in a way that feels sudden and a little alarming. Sandy soil dries fast, patio…

Florida’s mainstream nursery circuit carries a predictable rotation. The same natives show up on the same benches season after season. For gardeners who have worked through that list, finding something less common requires a different kind of destination entirely. Rare and unusual Florida natives exist. They are just not sitting in the garden center next…

Florida’s edible native plant list is longer than most gardeners realize. The gap between what is actually out there and what shows up in the average yard is significant. Most people are working from a very short list, the usual suspects from seed catalogs and garden centers. Meanwhile, an entire edible landscape sits largely undiscovered…

Wax myrtle has a look that works in almost any Florida yard. Fast, evergreen, tough enough to handle the climate without complaint. That combination made it popular, and popularity created a market for plants that look similar but behave very differently once established. Several shrubs get sold as wax myrtle alternatives that are anything but….

Dry shade under Florida trees is where garden ambitions go to get humbled. The soil is full of competing roots, the light barely makes it through the canopy, and moisture disappears before most plants ever get a real foothold. Homeowners try groundcovers, try mulch, try a rotating cast of shade plants from the garden center,…

Foundation plantings in Florida have a way of looking great for about six months and then becoming a maintenance commitment nobody signed up for. Constant trimming, reshaping, cutting back plants that had other ideas about how big they wanted to get. The manicured look is achievable, but in Florida’s climate, keeping it that way can…

Painted buntings are cautious birds. That extraordinary color comes with a price, and they know it. Out in the open, a male painted bunting is one of the most visible targets in the Florida yard, so they stick close to dense cover, dart in quickly, and retreat fast. A yard without the right shrubs is…

The bonfire gets lit. The smoke rolls across the yard. Someone says it keeps the bugs away. Everyone nods and settles into their chairs feeling reasonably protected for the evening. It is a comfortable belief. It is also the reason ticks find so many willing hosts at outdoor parties across Florida every summer. The fire…

It lines driveways, borders pools, frames entryways, and shows up in Florida landscapes so consistently that most people assume it must be completely safe. It blooms beautifully. It tolerates heat, salt, and drought without complaint. From a distance it looks like exactly the kind of low-maintenance hedge a Florida yard needs. Up close, the story…

Liriope shows up along Florida walkways the way a default setting shows up in software. Nobody made a strong case for it. It was just there, available, and familiar enough that it became the automatic choice for a lot of landscape installs across the state. It does the job. It stays green, it edges a…

St. Augustine grass has a reputation for toughness, and through most of the Florida year that reputation holds. Then a brutal heat stretch arrives and the lawn starts showing its limits fast. Yellowing patches, thinning areas, that dry and brittle texture that means something has gone wrong below the surface. The instinct is to water…

Desert rose plants have a reputation for being difficult to propagate. That reputation is mostly wrong, but it sticks around because a few specific steps get skipped, rushed, or done in the wrong order. The result is a cutting that sits in soil for weeks without doing anything, and a gardener who concludes the whole…

Most garden centers carry the same edible plants in the same rotation. Tomatoes, peppers, basil, a few herbs, and whatever fruit trees moved well last season. Walk in knowing what you are looking for and walk out with something that belongs in any yard anywhere in the country. Nothing specific to our state. Nothing that…

Florida patios should be places you actually want to spend time. Ticks and mosquitoes change that calculation fast. Most homeowners reach for sprays and candles without considering that one plant in a container might be doing more work than anything else on the patio. This plant does not get the attention it deserves in Florida…

A yard that attracts owls is a yard that has something most Florida properties quietly lack. Owls are not random visitors. They show up where the habitat supports them, where the right cover exists, and where hunting conditions work in their favor. Get those things right and an owl may claim your yard as regular…

Armadillos are single minded about one thing. Whatever is living in your soil, grubs, worms, insects, they want it, and a well-maintained Florida garden bed is basically an invitation to start excavating. One night of armadillo activity can undo hours of work, and the frustrating part is that they tend to come back to the…

There is a particular kind of Florida gardening frustration that hits when you walk outside, see a wilting plant, and then realize you literally just watered it an hour ago. It does not make sense on the surface, and yet it happens constantly here. Florida’s heat, sandy soil, unpredictable rainy season downpours, and perpetually soggy…

Most Florida shrubs look their best in the mild months and spend summer in a kind of holding pattern, technically alive, not doing much worth noticing. July and August become the seasons you stop expecting anything from the yard and just wait for fall to arrive. Some shrubs missed that memo entirely. A specific group…

Basil and Florida summers have a tense relationship. The heat that makes Florida feel tropical is exactly what pushes basil toward bolt. Once that happens, the flavor drops, the plant shifts energy away from leaves, and the lush herb you were counting on becomes something you are constantly cutting back. Most gardeners lose this battle…

Clumping bamboo is not the villain of the Florida garden. It does what it promises well enough, and plenty of yards use it without any drama. But a lot of gardeners shopping for privacy end up with running bamboo by mistake, and that is a completely different situation with a much harder ending. Even when…

July arrives in Florida and the landscape sorts itself out. Some plants keep performing. Many do not. The ones that struggle in Florida summer are usually plants that evolved somewhere else, in climates with cooler nights, less humidity, more forgiving soil. They were selected for how they looked in a nursery in March, not for…

The petunias looked great in April. By June they were gone. The impatiens that promised all-season color turned to mush after the first serious heat wave. The herbs on the porch are holding on by a thread. Florida summer does not discriminate. It tests every plant on the patio and collects its tuition in wilted…

Florida afternoon thunderstorms are one of those things you either learn to work with or spend the summer frustrated by. They roll in fast, drop serious rain, and leave garden beds, containers, and low-lying planting spots completely soaked before you even had a chance to check the forecast. Most Florida-friendly plants handle that kind of…

Florida summers sort plants into two categories fast. The ones that handle it and the ones that do not. By July most yards have made that division pretty obvious. Struggling plants start dropping leaves, fading out, or refusing to do anything until October arrives and the heat finally backs off. Native Florida plants rewrite that…

Heat damage in a Florida garden is not always the end of the story. Some plants take a hit, look rough for a stretch, and come back stronger once conditions shift. Others never recover. Knowing which camp your plants fall into changes how you respond when summer does its worst. Most Florida gardeners have written…

Jacksonville sits in a climate middle ground that catches a lot of gardeners off guard. Summers here have their own personality, distinct from the rest of Florida in ways that matter when you are deciding what to plant. The options that coast through Jacksonville’s heat and humidity are not always the ones lining the shelves…

Weed fabric and Florida have a complicated relationship that most garden centers prefer not to discuss. You install it correctly. You use the good brand. You pin every edge and cover it with fresh mulch. Six months later, weeds are back and somehow more confident than before. Florida gardeners have been having this experience for…
