FLORIDA

Woodpeckers are one of those backyard visitors that make a yard feel genuinely wild, and once you start noticing them working their way across bark and branches, it is hard not to get a little obsessed. These birds are not just putting on a show though. They are actively hunting wood-boring beetle larvae, ants, and…

Florida has a well-earned reputation for things that can hurt you. Most residents have a mental list. Cottonmouths near the water, fire ants in the lawn, jellyfish at the beach. One shrub that grows in yards across the state belongs on that list and almost never makes it. It blooms beautifully. Large, trumpet-shaped flowers that…

Florida salvia should bloom from spring through fall without much argument. Some do. Others put on a show for three weeks and spend the rest of the season looking busy without actually doing anything. The difference is almost never about the plant. It is about a handful of mistakes that happened quietly, early on, that…

Overseeding a Florida lawn in summer sounds like a recipe for wasted seed and wasted effort. The heat is serious, the soil dries fast, and the odds of getting new grass to establish during the hardest stretch of the growing season seem stacked against anyone who tries. The odds shift considerably with the right approach….

You walk outside one morning, coffee in hand, and there they are again. Two tall gray birds stepping slowly across your lawn like they own the place, heads bobbing, red caps glinting in the Florida sun. Sandhill cranes have a way of making themselves at home in Florida neighborhoods, and once they find a yard…

Florida roses in July look like they are managing summer on their own terms. Color still coming, foliage holding, nothing obviously wrong. That picture is what makes the one thing roses actually need this month so easy to skip. July is the month Florida roses make decisions about how long they keep performing. Left alone,…

Thrips and spider mites in a Florida patio garden have a way of appearing out of nowhere and spreading faster than most gardeners can respond. By the time the damage on the leaves is obvious, the population has already been there long enough to become a real problem. Most Florida gardeners reach for sprays. Some…

Bamboo solves the privacy problem and creates several others. Most Florida homeowners figure that out one season too late, after the spread has started and the removal estimate arrives. But even the better-behaved clumping varieties come with a trade-off that rarely gets mentioned at the nursery. Sod webworms treat certain bamboo varieties as a reliable…

July gets the reputation in Florida gardening circles. The heat peaks, the complaints start, and everyone braces for the worst month of the growing season. August arrives quietly and proceeds to do more damage than July ever managed. The shift is subtle at first. Heat that was already serious holds longer into the night. Soil…

A Florida lawn in summer is working harder against its owner than for them. Water bills climb. The grass struggles through heat and inconsistent rain. The end result is a surface that looks marginally acceptable on a good week and exhausted on every other one. All of that effort for something that gives nothing back….

Clusia in Florida earns its reputation as a tough, low maintenance shrub, and through most of the year that reputation holds without much help from anyone. July is where that hands-off approach starts costing something. The rainy season is building toward its peak. Clusia that goes into that stretch without the right preparation tends to…

A mockingbird claiming a Florida yard is not a casual decision. That bird is territorial, specific, and vocal about what it has decided belongs to it. Most homeowners hear one before they ever see it, and once it settles in, the whole yard feels different. Mockingbirds do not show up just anywhere. A yard they…

An owl near a Florida home after dark is not something most people forget. That silhouette on a fence post or roofline, the eyes catching light, the stillness that makes the bird seem less like a visitor and more like something permanent. Most people who encounter one up close describe it the same way. Unsettling…

Most Florida homeowners look at their lawn in September and wonder what went wrong over summer. The ones with a lawn that still looks good in September already know. They made a few specific calls in July when the heat was serious and doing nothing felt like the safer choice. July feels like a month…

Florida front lawns are expensive habits. Fertilizer, irrigation, pest treatments, mowing, edging, and the recurring cost of keeping something alive that was never particularly suited to this climate. Most homeowners add it up only once, usually after a frustrating season, and start asking whether there is a better way to use that space. There is….

August in Florida is not the month to be cutting shrubs back. The heat is at its worst, and plants are already under pressure. Hard pruning during the most intense stretch of summer stresses root systems that have better things to focus on than pushing new growth through brutal conditions. July is the window. Specifically,…

Fungus gnats are one of those porch problems that seem minor until they are not. Small, persistent, appearing in clouds around every container plant every time someone walks past. Most homeowners reach for sticky traps and soil treatments without considering that one plant placed nearby might make the whole situation less appealing to them in…

Shrubs that need a haircut every three weeks, hedges that look wild before summer is even over, front beds that feel like a second job – sound familiar? A lot of Florida homeowners want a yard that looks professionally planted without spending every Saturday with clippers in hand. The good news is that some plants…

The feeder is full. Your Florida yard looks fine. And yet the birds barely show up. Meanwhile, two streets over, a neighbor without a single feeder has warblers in the shrubs, towhees scratching through the leaf litter, and cedar waxwings moving through every afternoon like they own the place. What is the difference? It is…

July is not exactly a forgiving month for patio plants, and containers near concrete, sunny railings, or south-facing walls know it better than anyone. The heat climbs fast, rainy season humidity settles in for the long haul, and plants that looked perfectly happy in June can start showing signs of stress before the month is…

The space under a mature Florida magnolia looks like a gardening problem that has no good answer. Surface roots everywhere. Canopy so dense that rain barely reaches the soil. Ground that stays dry and dim for most of the year while the rest of the yard gets full sun and regular rainfall. Many homeowners leave…

Crape myrtles are one of Florida’s most reliable flowering trees. Beautiful bark, summer blooms, heat tolerance that most plants can only dream about. And yet Florida yards are full of crape myrtles that look nothing like what the homeowner originally planted them for. However, the tree is not the problem. One decision made before the…

April is the easy month for Florida patio containers. Everything looks good in April. The temperatures are reasonable, the humidity has not fully committed yet, and even mediocre plant choices can pull off a decent display. July is where the truth comes out. Most Florida patio containers that looked stunning in spring are limping by…

Florida summer storms do not give much warning. The sky shifts, the wind picks up, and what was a calm afternoon becomes a serious situation in under an hour. Most Florida homeowners think about storm prep in terms of windows and doors. The yard rarely gets a thought until after the damage is already done….

Your mandevilla looked gorgeous in May, but somewhere between June and August, something shifted. The blooms got sparse, the leaves curled under the brutal Florida sun, and now the whole vine hangs limp against the trellis like it gave up. Florida summers are no joke, and even tropical plants like mandevilla can hit a wall…

Hibiscus in Florida looks like it was built for July. Tropical, bold, seemingly designed for heat and humidity. That appearance is a little misleading. Florida’s hottest weeks push even hibiscus past its comfort zone. The plants that come through looking their best are the ones that had some help before the worst of it arrived….

Some Florida yards look defeated by July. Others look like summer is exactly what they were designed for. The difference is rarely about irrigation systems or professional maintenance. It almost always comes down to what was planted and where. The yards that hold up through Florida’s hardest months share a pattern. Certain plants show up…

Mid-July in Florida is its own kind of gardening challenge, and pretending otherwise does not help anyone. The heat is intense, afternoon storms are a daily guarantee, and the humidity makes every garden visit feel like hard work before you even pick up a tool. Gardeners who want productive summer beds have to think completely…

Okra is about as close to a perfect Florida summer vegetable as it gets, but July has a way of reminding even the toughest plants who is really in charge. Intense sun, afternoon storms that seem to appear out of nowhere, stretches of dry heat between rain events, and pest pressure that quietly builds as…

Florida’s rainy season is brutal for some plants and a genuine gift for others. The ones that struggle through it are easy to spot by August, stressed, waterlogged, and waiting for conditions to ease. The ones built for it do something entirely different. They use every bit of that rainfall to push hard, spread wide,…

Conventional wisdom says wait until fall to plant in Florida. Cooler temperatures, more reliable rainfall, less stress on new plants. That advice is not wrong for most plants. For Florida natives, the picture is more complicated. A specific group of natives actually handles summer planting better than most gardeners expect. They are adapted to this…

Florida soil does not exactly make things easy. It drains fast, holds almost nothing, and has a talent for making perfectly good plants look like they gave up halfway through the season. Many gardeners respond by buying more fertilizer, watering more, and wondering why nothing sticks. A growing number of Florida gardeners are trying something…

July in Florida turns lawn care into a genuine workout, and not just because of the heat. Afternoon storms arrive almost daily, humidity hangs around from sunrise to well past sunset, and grass that looked perfectly manageable on Monday can need mowing again by Thursday. That combination of moisture, heat, and fast growth creates exactly…

Many garden centers in Florida sell the same forty plants. You know the ones. The same non-native shrubs in the same black plastic pots, lined up under the same metal roof, none of them particularly thrilled to be in Florida. Finding a nursery that actually specializes in Florida natives is a different experience entirely. The…

Corner lots are unfair in the best possible way. Two full sides of exposure. Twice the visibility of a standard yard. Every driver, jogger, and neighbor gets a front-row view whether you invited them or not. That kind of real estate either works for you or works against you, and the difference usually comes down…

Salvia looks like a heat-tough plant, and in many ways it is, but Florida’s July has a way of finding the limits of even the most reliable garden performers. One stretch of intense afternoon heat, a few days of unpredictable rain, some reflected warmth bouncing off a nearby patio or driveway, and a salvia that…

Shopping for plants at a Florida garden center can feel exciting and a little overwhelming at the same time. The shelves are packed with colorful options, and every single one of them looks perfectly healthy and promising sitting there in its nursery pot. But not every plant that looks great in a container will thrive…

Homeowners from Tampa to Miami are swapping out hard plastic panels for a lush, living wall that looks like it belongs right in the Florida landscape. The shift is happening slowly, yard by yard, and most people driving past never quite realize what they are looking at. They just notice that one property looks warmer,…

Moving to Florida feels like winning the garden lottery. Sunshine every day, warm temperatures year-round, and lush greenery everywhere you look. You picture yourself harvesting tomatoes in February, growing citrus in the backyard, and never worrying about a frost again. Then June arrives. The heat becomes something physical, the afternoon storms arrive like clockwork, and…

Mandevilla in July is basically Florida gardening on fast forward. The heat is intense, afternoon rain arrives on schedule, and this tropical vine responds by pushing out new growth at a pace that is genuinely exciting if you know how to work with it. Left to its own devices though, a mandevilla can end up…

Painted buntings breed in Florida and most people have no idea. The migration attention gets all the press, but a portion of the population stays to nest. The habitat requirements during breeding season are specific in ways that a feeder alone cannot meet. Dense low shrubs for cover. Native grasses producing seed at the right…

Most Florida gardeners have made peace with the idea that summer means a tired yard. Things hang on, color fades, and the general expectation is survival until fall arrives and conditions become reasonable again. Some plants never got that memo. A specific group thrives in Florida’s July in ways that genuinely surprise people who have…

Mid-July in Florida is not the time to be heroic in the garden. The heat is serious, the humidity is relentless. Tasks that made sense in May can stress plants badly when pushed through Florida’s hardest stretch. Some tasks become more urgent in mid-July, not less. Miss them now and the consequences show up later…

Florida in July is basically a giant, outdoor steam room, but your lantana is absolutely living for it. These colorful little firecrackers laugh in the face of ninety-degree heat and daily afternoon thunderstorms, showing off those vibrant blooms when other plants are totally melting. But even the toughest garden divas need a little summer tune-up…

Keeping porch containers looking good through a Florida summer is a genuine challenge, and the plants that made it through spring are not automatically the right ones for June through September. Blazing afternoon sun, reflected heat off concrete, fast-drying pots, and the unpredictable swings of rainy season all add up to a tough environment that…

Marigolds are not bad plants. They are just not Florida summer plants. Almost every June, the same thing happens. The marigolds that looked cheerful in April start sulking. The humidity gets to them. The afternoon storms get to them. By July, they are soggy, barely blooming, and leaving obvious gaps in beds that were supposed…

Few plants scream tropical quite like schefflera, its glossy leaves fanning out like little green umbrellas. Tuck it along a fence line or into a garden bed, and your yard suddenly looks airlifted from a rainforest. Florida’s heat, humidity, and steady rainfall match almost exactly what schefflera evolved to handle, so the plant settles in…

Clusia became Florida’s default privacy hedge the same way most landscaping trends do. Someone planted it, it grew fast, looked glossy, blocked the neighbor’s view, and everyone else copied the idea without asking too many questions. Thick, shiny, low-maintenance, and quick to fill in. Easy sell. But “Clusia” is not always as simple as the…

Wooden trellises are coming down in Florida yards, and a stunning native vine is going up in their place. Gardeners across the state are making the switch after discovering a plant that thrives in Florida’s heat, needs surprisingly little fuss, and rewards you with months of brilliant color without turning into an invasive nightmare. Hummingbirds…

Florida ixora can look gorgeous in spring, then absolutely betrayed by July. One month it is glossy, green, and covered in color. The next, the leaf tips crisp, the blooms vanish, and the whole shrub looks like it spent the afternoon arguing with the driveway heat. That panic moment gets homeowners into trouble. A sun-stressed…

Mid-July is the point in the Florida gardening season where reality sets in hard. Plants that looked great in June are drooping, struggling, and showing the kind of stress that no quick fix is going to solve overnight. Intense heat, relentless humidity, rainy season storms that are never quite predictable, fast-draining sandy soil, and pest…

Gopher tortoises do not ask for much, but what they do need, low-growing native plants, open sandy ground, and a yard that is not trying to tidy itself into oblivion, is something Florida homeowners can genuinely help provide. These slow-moving reptiles are a bigger deal than most people realize. Their deep burrows end up sheltering…

Somewhere along the way, native gardening picked up a reputation it does not deserve. Overgrown. Messy. The yard that makes the neighbors wonder. Florida gardeners who actually know their natives will tell you that reputation is completely backwards. The right Florida natives look intentional, polished, and designed. They just happen to also run a hummingbird…

Bark mulch in Florida garden beds is a seasonal commitment that never really ends. It breaks down, it washes out, it fades, and every spring the bags come back out and the process starts over. Most Florida gardeners accept that cycle as part of the deal without asking whether something better exists. Something does. A…

Florida has a bird that looks almost unreal. Blue head. Green back. Red belly. The male painted bunting shows up dressed like a tiny flying festival, then somehow ignores half the yards waiting for him. That part feels personal. You add a feeder. You keep the lawn tidy. You trim the shrubs into polite little…

Florida coastal fence lines have a short list of enemies and salt air is at the top of it. Metal corrodes faster than the warranty suggests. Wood rots before anyone expected. And most plants that looked fine at the nursery turn brown, drop leaves, and give up within a season of being asked to perform…

Nobody picks mulch thinking about roaches. They pick it for color, for price, for whatever the garden center had stacked near the register. That decision, made in about thirty seconds, is quietly creating one of the best roach environments a Florida foundation can offer. Roaches need moisture, warmth, and cover. Some mulch types deliver all…
